FIDE World Cup 2021 R1.1: Indian Men and Women off to a fantastic start

Indian Men and Women made a fantastic start to their FIDE World Cup 2021 campaign. Only Gukesh was held to a draw by IM Pawel Teclaf (POL). Gukesh needs to win his next game to advance to Round 2, a draw means he will have to play tie-breaks tomorrow. Adhiban, Aravindh, Nihal, Praggnanandhaa, Iniyan, Vaishali and Padmini scored a victory each. Iniyan is the only Indian who defeated a higher rated opponent, Sebastian Bogner (SUI). Harikrishna, Vidit and Harika got a Bye in Round 1. They will directly play Round 2 on 15th July. Bhakti advanced to Round 2 where she will face Natalija Pogonina (RUS). Vishy Anand makes a fabulous comeback at Croatia Rapid and Blitz GCT

Vishy Anand has once again proved his detractors wrong as he scored 21.0/36, secured clear second position at Croatia Rapid and Blitz Grand Chess Tour. Until this event, the legend had not played any over-the-board chess tournament for almost one and a half years. On the final day, he scored an unbeaten 6.5/9, same as the winner of the tournament, Vachier-Lagrave. Anand had also beaten Kasparov twice on consecutive days, the last time Anand won against Kasparov in a tournament was 1998. That's not all, Anand performed at 2871, gained a massive 40 rating points, taking his live rating to 2825 and climbing to World no.5 in the Blitz ranking in the live ratings list. Croatia Rapid and Blitz Day 4: A nightmarish start for Kasparov

Kasparov has sporadically played some blitz or chess960 event since his retirement, but yesterday's blitz at Croatia Rapid and Blitz GCT was the most horrifying start he has ever had in recent times. Not only because he is not in competitive shape, but also he is playing against the best of the best world who are at their prime. Playing blitz is certainly not an easy task against the players who are in regular touch. Thus, he managed to make only one draw and suffer eight losses. He came very close to winning against Giri and Vachier-Lagrave but he was not able to convert them. The entire chess universe is eagerly waiting for Kasparov to show a glimpse of what he used to do in his heydays on the final day of the event which starts today at 6:30 p.m. IST. Paracin Open 2021 R1-3: Vatsal surprises Ter-Sahakyan with a beautiful queen sacrifice

Six players are in the lead with a 100% score 3.0/3 at the conclusion of Round 3 at Paracin Open 2021. They are - Ahmadzada, Gormaz, Budisavljevic, Muradli, Anna Sargsyan and Bryakin. Six Indians are in the chase just a half point behind - Sankalp, Rithvik, Aditya, Aanjaneya, Arjun and Raahil. FM Vatsal Singhania scored a beautiful victory over the top seed of the event, Samvel Ter-Sahakyan in Round 2. Sankalp Gupta held Manuel Petrosyan to a draw. Croatia Rapid and Blitz Day 3: A day of interesting draws

Anish Giri scored a big win against Anand which propelled him to the shared second place at the conclusion of Day 3 at Croatia Rapid and Blitz GCT. Nepomniachtchi maintained his sole lead 11.0/18. He is closely followed by four players - Vachier-Lagrave, Giri, Kasparov/Saric and Duda 10.0/18. Saric finished strong by remaining undefeated for two consecutive days. He will be replaced by the legend Kasparov for the Blitz event which starts today from 6:30 p.m. IST. Nine rounds of Blitz will be played today and tomorrow, making it a total of 18 rounds. Croatia no.1 Ivan Saric once again played another fantastic endgame, this time he defeated the Croatia Rapid and Blitz GCT sole leader Ian Nepomniachtchi. The world championship challenger was undefeated until he faced Saric. Vachier-Lagrave, Saric and Anand remained unbeaten throughout the day as they share the second place with 7.0/12 each. Saric only has three more games left today to finish his rapid event on a high note and make sure his replacement, the legend Kasparov gets a fantastic headstart for the Blitz. Outstanding Nihal Sarin wins Serbia Open 2021 Masters

Nihal Sarin once again delivered a stellar performance to win Serbia Open 2021 Masters. He scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 and finished a half point ahead of the strong field. He had decisive advantage against Fedoseev in the final part of the endgame, but he decided to make a draw because it was enough for him to win the event. To deliver two consecutive 2780+ performance, storm into World no.88 and India no.5 in the live ratings list, just days before FIDE World Cup 2021 is something to cause shivers for his opening round opponent at the biggest World Cup in history. The first day of the Croatia Rapid and Blitz witnessed seven decisive games out of 15. White won in all of them. Nepomniachtchi started the day with two victories and a draw with Anand to take the sole lead 5.0/6. He is looking stronger by the day on the board as his World Championship approaches. Seven players share the second place after the third round in Rapid with a 50% score, 3.0/6. Serbia Open R8: Nihal gains sole lead 7.0/8 and breaks into World Top 100

Nihal Sarin soared into World Top #100 as he crossed 2650 in the live ratings list to become World #90. What a way to achieve that as he gained sole lead 7.0/8 by scoring a hat-trick of victories and he is still undefeated. He will face the top seed of the tournament, Vladimir Fedoseev in the final round. Apart from Fedoseev, Bernadskiy and IM Aditya Mittal are also tied at second place 6.5/8. Aditya is playing phenomenal chess as he racked up five consecutive victories including the last three against GMs. He would definitely like to score his maiden GM-norm and make a podium finish. A hearty chess gesture from the Czech Republic to the Indian state of Kerala

The state of Kerala, India found a pleasant gesture from a land faraway, the Czech Republic, when 'Chess Train' organiser Pavel Matocha organised a charity chess simultaneous display at Prague to help in its vaccination drive, the raised money going to the Chief Minister's Distress Relief Fund of the Kerala Government. The motive behind this hearty gesture was no more than the attachment felt with the state of Kerala and its people, when Matocha participated in the 'Chess Houseboat' event held during early 2020. Serbia Open R6-7: Nihal and Kovalenko emerge as the leaders 6.0/7

Nihal Sarin is aiming to score his second consecutive tournament victory and gain maximum momentum before starting his World Cup campaign. GM Igor Kovalenko (LAT) and Nihal are the only two players in the lead 6.0/7 at the conclusion of Round 7 at Serbia Open 2021. They will inevitably face each other in the penultimate round of the event. Kovalenko defeated Arjun in the seventh round.
