Praggnanandhaa conquers the historic Kvika Reykjavik Open 2022

GM Praggnanandhaa joined the long line of legendary winners of Reykjavik Open. Among the world champions, Mikhail Tal, Vassily Smyslov won the round-robin editions in the first ten years. Among the Indians, Harikrishna (2006), Abhijeet Gupta (2010 and 2016) and Adhiban (2018) won the presitigious event. Abhijeet, Adhiban and now Praggnanandhaa, each of them won clear first. Gukesh was moments away from winning the tournament when he blundered and lost the game. Apart from Pragg, Abhijeet Gupta is the only other Indian to finish in top 10. He scored 6.5/9 to finish at shared seventh place. IM Tania Sachdev scored 6.0/9 to win the Best Woman prize. She is the highest finisher among female participants.

MPL 34th National U-12 R7-8: Ethan Vaz and Shubhi Gupta emerge as the dominant sole leaders

Ethan Vaz (Goa) is aiming for a triple hat-trick as he won both of his seventh and eighth convincingly in MPL 32nd National Under-12 Open National Chess Championship 2022. The Goan boy disposed both Maharashtra kids Vivaan Vijay Saraogi and Aansh Nandan Nerurkar without any difficulty. He is now a full point ahead of the field. Goutham Krishna H (KER) is the only one at 7.0/8. In the Girls event, top seed Shubhi Gupta (UP) won both of her games. She crushed the seventh round leader WCM Shriyana S Mallya (KAR) and got a winning position in just 15 moves. The rest was just a cakewalk for her. Round 9 starts today at 10:00 a.m. IST today. Kvika Reykjavik Open R8: Praggnanandhaa crushes Cornette in 25 moves

GM Praggnanandhaa set the board on fire as he crushed Matthieu Cornette (FRA, 2569) in 25 moves. He is now one of the three leaders along with GM Max Warmerdam (NED) and GM Mads Andersen (DEN) at 6.5/8. Pragg will square off against India's youngest GM D Gukesh in the final round. He scored a beautiful victory over GM Johann Hjartarson (ISL) in the penultimate round. Gukesh is at 6.0/8 with six other players. IM Tania Sachdev missed an opportunity to draw against GM Mads. MPL 34th National U-12 R5-6: Ethan Vaz scores a double hat-trick, gains sole lead

Sadbhav Rautela (UTT) got himself closest to upstage Ethan Vaz (Goa) in the fifth round of MPL 32nd National Under-12 Open Chess Championship 2022. However, the Uttarakhand boy was unable to make the most out of opportunity and allowed his opponent to turn things around. Md. Reyan (BIH) could not handle the big match pressure against Ethan and blundered terribly which ended the game immediately. Thus, the kid from Goa is currently the sole leader in the Open event 6.0/6. After a draw in Round 5, Delhites Prishita Gupta and Aadhya Jain won their respective games in the following round. IM Tania Sachdev started Kvika Reykjavik Open 2022 with only 1.5/3. Then she won her next four games in-a-row. The seventh round victory against Iceland no.2 GM Hedinn Steingrimsson is extra special. She showed her resilience and beat his opponent in a completely lost queen endgame. Adhiban, Praggnanandhaa and Gukesh all three of them were unable to beat him. GM Max Warmerdam (NED) has taken sole lead 6.0/7. He is closely followed by Praggnanandhaa, Mads Andersen (DEN), Tania, Pouya Idani (IRI) and Matthieu Cornette (FRA) at 5.5/7 each. Aadhya Jain (DEL) defeated the top seed of the Girls event, Shubhi Gupta (UP) in Round 4 of MPL 32nd National Under-12 Chess Championship. Shubhi was unable to realize her advantage in a complex position. Her exchange sacrifice turned out to be inaccurate as her opponent returned the exchange in the next few moves before going into a winning major piece endgame. Soundarya Kumar Pradhan clinches 15th AICFB National Chess Championship

Soundarya Kumar Pradhan (ODI) ended six-time consecutive National champion Kishan Gangolli's (KAR) eight-year long reign. The 22-year-old from Odisha scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 to finish a half point ahead of the field and become National Blind Chess Champion. This is his maiden National title. Defending champion, Kishan scored 7.0/9, remained undefeated and secured second position. Swapanil Shah, Marimuthu K and Somender B L scored 6.5/9 each. They were placed third to fifth according to the tie-breaks. The top five finishers will represent India at the upcoming IBCA World Team Championship. Praggnanandhaa likes to take chances when he can. In the fifth round of Kvika Reykjavik Open 2022, Pragg's attempt to score a win almost happened until he missed an intermezzo against Iceland no.2 GM Hedinn Steingrimsson. Gukesh had a short 22-move draw against Brazil no.2 Alexandr Fier. Raunak Sadhwani lost a completely winning game against GM Simon Williams. Adhiban had a mysterious draw in a winning position against IM Brandon Clarke. Abhijeet Gupta was held to a draw by Indonesia no.1 woman Irine Kharisma Sukandar. MPL 34th National U-12 R1-2: Daksha Rudra and Ayaan Garg score big upsets

9-year-old Ayaan Garg (CHA) stunned one of the tournament favorites Mrinmoy Rajkhowa (ASM) in Round 2 of MPL 34th National Under-12 Open Chess Championship 2022. When Mrinmoy was unable to find a complex long line to seize his advantage, a retreat cost him the upper hand and the balance completely shifted towards the kid from Chandigarh. He converted his advantage without giving any chance to his opponent. In the Girls event, Daksha Rudra (WB) defeated second-seeded Arshiya Das (TRI) in the first round. MPL 31st National Under-18 Chess Championships 2022 preview

180 players are expected to take part in MPL 31st National Under-18 Open and Girls Chess Championship 2022. India's 73rd GM Bharath Subramaniyam H will be the top seed in the Open section, WFM Jyothsna L will be among Girls. The tournament will have a total prize fund ₹900,000. Each group has a prize fund of ₹450,000, the first prize being ₹90000 in each section. It will be organized by Dr. Mahalingam College of Engineering and Technology, Pollachi & Coimbatore District Chess Association from 18th to 23rd April 2022. GM Lukasz Jarmula (POL) defeated GM Hans Niemann (USA) to take sole lead 4.0/4 at Kvika Reykjavik Open 2022. Gukesh, Praggnanandhaa, top seed of the tournament Pouya Idani (IRI), Alexandr Fier (BRA), Hjorvar Steinn Gretarsson (ISL) and Hedinn Steingrimsson (ISL) are trailing by a half point at 3.5/4 each. Gukesh, Praggnanandhaa, Abhijeet Gupta, Tania Sachdev and Vardaan Nagpal scored a win each. Adhiban and Raunak were held to draws by their strong IM opponents. Kishan Gangolli (KAR) was held to a draw by Swapanil Shah (MAH) and Marimuthu K (TN) in the seventh and eighth round respectively. Meanwhile Soundarya Kumar Pradhan (ODI) won both of his games on the penultimate day against Subhendu Kumar Patra (ODI) and Aryan B Joshi (MAH) respectively. It propelled him to the sole lead 7.0/8. Kishan is at a half point behind 6.5/8, followed by Swapanil and Marimuthu at 6.0/8 each. Soundarya faces Swapanil in the last round and Kishan goes against the top seed Darpan Inani (GUJ). A win makes Soundarya a clear champion, whereas a draw will leave his fate on Kishan's hands. Third seeded GM Hans Niemann (USA) and GM Lukasz Jarmula (POL) emerged coleaders at the conclusion of the third round of Kvika Reykjavik Open 2022. Gukesh, Adhiban and Raunak are at 2.5/3 each. Gukesh scored a very nice win in the King's Indian Defence in the second round against IM Thibault Fantinel (FRA). Adhiban converted his extra pawn advantage into a win against popular chess streamer IM Eric Rosen (USA). Raunak won against FM Harry Grieve convincingly in Round 3. Kishan Gangolli won both of his games on the third day to gain sole lead 5.5/6 at SAVA Herbals 15th AICFB National Chess Championship for Visually Challenged players. He defeated Ashvin K Makwana and Milind Samant. Although Ashvin managed to recover an inferior position and the game seemed to be heading towards a draw. In the minor piece endgame, Kishan's opponent miscalculated and the tournament leader figured a way to maximize his bishop pair along with his well-positioned king. Nigmatov Ortik clinches 3rd Gujarat GM Open 2022, Neelotpal second and Anuj third

IM Nigmatov Ortik (UZB) drew his final round game against GM Neelotpal Das. IM Anuj Shrivatri scored his sixth consecutive victory of the event and ended IM Srihari L R's unbeaten streak. Ortik, Neelotpal and Anuj scored 8.5/10 each. Ortik won 3rd Gujarat International GM Open 2022 due to better tie-break score, Neelotpal and Anuj were placed second and third respectively. Top three won ₹251000, ₹201000 and ₹150000 respectively along with a trophy each. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹15,00,000.
