Diptayan Ghosh dominates 3rd Dombivli Kalyan Rapid Rating Open 2022

GM Diptayan Ghosh scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win 3rd Dombivli Kalyan Rapid Rating Open 2022. Last year also Diptayan won the same event with an exact same score and once again he finished a half point ahead of the field. Seven players scored 8/9 each. Ankur Mahesh Gokhale and Arpan Das were adjudged second and third respectively according to tie-breaks. The total cash prize fund of the tournament was ₹200000 and 97 trophies. The top three prizes were ₹30000, ₹20000 and ₹15000 along with a trophy each. The one-day Rapid Rating tournament was organized by Anant Vaze Sangeet, Kala and Krida Pratishthan & Aryan Institute of Chess Excellence on 13th November 2022. Breaking News: Aditya Mittal becomes India's 77th Grandmaster

Aditya Mittal earned his maiden GM-norm at Serbia Masters 2021. Five months later, he scored his second GM-norm at 2nd El Llobregat Open 2021. The teenager scored his third and final GM-norm at Serbia Masters 2022. In the sixth round of 3rd El Llobregat Open 2022, he drew with the Spain no.1 GM Francisco Vallejo Pons to cross 2500 in the live ratings and become India's 77th Grandmaster. Aditya has been close to 2500 for quite some time in the past few months, however, he finally managed it cross it last night. He is currently one of the five leaders of the tournament at 5/6 each. Vaisnav A dominates 8th ICA Below 1700 Rating Tournament

Third seed of the tournament, Vaisnav A scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win 8th ICA Below 1700 Rating Tournament 2022. He finished a half point ahead of the field. Yogesh Selvam scored sole 8/9 to secure second place. He also remained undefeated. Five players scored 7.5/9. Out of them, Satheesh Kumar G was placed third according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹599000. The top three prizes were ₹50000 and a trophy, ₹40000 and ₹30000 each respectively. A total of 426 players took part from various parts of the country, Mongolia and USA. Arjun Erigaisi wins Tata Steel Chess India 2022 Blitz with a round to spare, now World no.10

India no.3 GM Arjun Erigaisi won Tata Steel Chess India 2022 Blitz with a round to spare 12.5/18. His score is the same as Nakamura and Anand tied in the 2018 edition of this event. Arjun scored two crucial wins on the final day against Shakhriyar Mamedyarov in Round 15 and Hikaru Nakamura in Round 17. Bouncing back against the new World Fischer Random champion after suffering a loss against Iran no.1 Parham Maghsoodloo in Round 16 is where Arjun showed what champions are made of. This is Arjun's third Tata Steel event triumph. First one was - Rapid 2021, then Challengers in early 2022 and now this. The teenager is now World no.10 in Blitz in the live ratings. Vaishali clinches Tata Steel Chess India 2022 Women Blitz convincingly, Harika third

India no.3 IM Vaishali R started the final day with a 7/9 score. She finished it with 13.5/18 to become the first-ever Tata Steel Chess India 2022 Women Blitz champion. She showed resiliency in her pursuit for the top prize. Despite losing to GM Anna Muzychuk for the second time in this event in Round 13, she managed to keep her composure and continue her path towards glory. After winning a double Bronze (Team and Individual) at the 44th Chess Olympiad 2022, this is certainly a huge achievement for her. Earlier in May, she scored her second GM-norm. Apart from this victory opening many more opportunities for her, she is also on her way to become a GM. Mariya Muzychuk (UKR) secured second place 12/18, followed by Harika Dronavalli 11/18 at third. Niraj Saripalli wins Late Lt. Cdr. Gopal Sakharam Sukthankar Memorial All Goa Rapid Rating 2022

Top seed of the tournament, CM Niraj Saripalli and Mandar Lad Pradip scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 each. Niraj won the Late Lt. Cdr. Gopal Sakharam Sukthankar Memorial All Goa Rapid Rating 2022 on tie-breaks. Mandar had to settle for second place. Both of them finished a full point ahead of the field. Three players - Sairaj Dilip Vernekar, Joy Kakodkar and Anish Naik scored 7.5/9 each. Sairaj was adjudged third. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹50000. The top three prizes were ₹11000, ₹8000 and ₹5000 along with a trophy each. The tournament is being conducted for 11 years and for the first time it was a Rapid Rated event. Tata Steel India 2022 Blitz R1-9: Arjun Erigaisi grabs sole lead, performs at 2871, now World no.12

Arjun Erigaisi scored 6.5/9 to emerge sole leader at Tata Steel Chess India 2022 Blitz. He is a half point ahead of Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (AZE) who was the only person to beat Arjun so far. They are followed by Vidit Gujrathi at 5.5/9. With a performance of 2871, Arjun is gaining 14.4 Elo rating points so far, making him currently the World no.12 in Blitz in the live ratings. Nihal Sarin made the perfect start by beating Hikaru Nakamura in the first round. However, they both are now at 5/9 each. Gukesh and Praggnanandhaa are at 4/9 each. The 15th Women's World Champion in history, GM Mariya Muzychuk made a blazing start at Tata Steel Chess India 2022 Women Blitz. The 44th Olympiad Gold medalist scored an unbeaten 8/9 to gain sole lead and stay a full point ahead of the competition. IM Vaishali R is at sole second position with a score of 7/9. They are followed by former World Women's Blitz champion, GM Anna Muzychuk (UKR) and 44th Olympiad Bronze medalist, GM Harika Dronavalli. Prasannaa victorious at Shantikumarji Firodia Rating Open 2022

Prasannaa S of Tamil Nadu scored 8/9 to win Shantikumarji Firodia All India Rating Open 2022. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. Four players - Shriraj Bhosale, Kaustuv Kundu, Harsh Ghadge and Shlok Sharnarthi scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed second to fifth according to tie-breaks. Shriraj became the only player to beat the eventual champion Prasannaa. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹200000. Anna Ushenina wins Tata Steel Chess India 2022 Women Rapid on tie-breaks, Harika third

GM Anna Ushenina (UKR) etched her name in history by winning the very first edition of Tata Steel Chess India 2022 Women Rapid. Both Ushenina and GM Nana Dzagnidze (GEO) scored 6.5/9. As per the tradition of Tata Steel Chess tournaments, the champion is always decided with Playoff matches. The former Women's World champion and 44th Chess Olympiad Gold medalist, Ushenina won both her Blitz tie-break games to finish first. Her opponent Dzagnidze was placed second. GM Harika Dronavalli scored sole 5.5/9 to finish third. Apart from the winner, Harika was the only other player to remain unbeaten. Today is a rest day. Nihal Sarin triumphs at Tata Steel Chess India 2022 Rapid with a round to spare

Nihal Sarin delivered his career best performance to win Tata Steel Chess India 2022 Rapid with a round to spare. Until the final round, he was the only player who remained unscathed. It was fitting that his best friend and the defending champion, Arjun Erigaisi became the sole person to win against the champion. The 18-year-old delivered his career best performance to win the strongest tournament he has ever participated so far. Arjun Erigaisi finished a half point behind Nihal at 6/9, five players finished at 4.5/9. They are - Vidit Gujrathi, Hikaru Nakamura, D Gukesh, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov and Nodirbek Abdusattorov. Bhakti Kulkarni and Praggnanandhaa are the Arjuna Award 2022 recipients in Chess

Over two years ago, we published an article mentioning that no Arjuna Award was conferred to chess players for a really long time. The nine-year-long drought finally comes to an end in the form of IM Bhakti Kulkarni and GM R Praggnanandhaa. The last chess player who received the award before them was, GM Abhijeet Gupta back in 2013. India had about 35 Grandmasters then. The number has more than doubled over the past nine years and the list of accolades and laurels achieved by the Indian players keep increasing almost every day. Both Bhakti and Praggnanandhaa won a medal at the 44th Chess Olympiad 2022 - Bronze each. They are also Asian Continental champions, Praggnanandhaa won it last month while Bhakti in 2016. Tata Steel India 2022 Rapid R4-6: Unbeaten Nihal Sarin leaps to the pole position

Nihal Sarin scored 2.5/3 on the second day to become the sole leader 4.5/6 at Tata Steel Chess India 2022 Rapid. The 18-year-old won against Gukesh and Sethuraman, drew with Wesley So, to stay a full point ahead of the competition. His close friend Arjun Erigaisi and previous day leader, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (AZE) are at 3.5/6 each. Both of them started their day with a loss. Hikaru Nakamura scored 2.5/3 to jump from ninth to fourth place. Vidit Gujrathi scored his first win of the event against Nodirbek Abdusattorov who suffered two consecutive defeats in round 4 and 5, before he defeated Sethuraman S P. Tata Steel India 2022 Women Rapid R4-6: Humpy almost displaces Dzagnidze at the top

GM Nana Dzagnidze continues her sole lead after the sixth round of Tata Steel Chess India 2022 Women Rapid. She drew all three of her games. GM Koneru Humpy got herself closest to ending the Georgian's unbeaten streak. However, despite her fantastic advantage in the opening, the India no.1 and World no.3 was unable to make the most out of her opportunity. She along with three more women - GM Anna Ushenina (UKR), GM Mariya Muzychuk (UKR) and IM Vaishali R are at 4/6 each. Tata Steel India 2022 Rapid R1-3: The 'Shakh Attack' Unleashed

Shakhriyar Mamedyarov enchanted the chess universe with his fantastic play on the first day of Tata Steel Chess India 2022 Rapid. After a relatively paltry victory against Gukesh, the World no.14 exhibited some exemplary play scoring wins over Sethuraman and Wesley So. The third round win against So was excellent. Speaking of excellence, Arjun Erigaisi started the day with a brilliant win over Nodirbek Abdusattorov in a clash of the champions. Arjun slipped a bit in the next two games by somehow managing two draws, one was lost and another had a full point fingertips away. Nihal Sarin is also at an unbeaten 2/3 along with Arjun.
