World Championship Game 14: Ding Liren escapes disaster, Playoff to crown the winner

The 14th game of the FIDE World Championship 2023 was the longest one. It lasted for nearly seven hours and 90 moves. The match witnessed Nimzo-Indian for the second time. It was a different variation in the final Classical game. Ding Liren went for an ambitious 12.Ng5 followed by 13.h4. "If Ng5 and h4 would win every game, chess would be very easy for White." - Ian Nepomniachtchhi quipped. The World no.3 sacrificed a pawn in the endgame and landed himself in a precarious position. Somehow he managed to find the crucial resource 38.b6 in the endgame which saved the day for him. Bharat Kumar Reddy Poluri victorious at 5th Bangalore Open 2023

Bharat Kumar Reddy Poluri and IM Chakravarthi Reddy M scored an unbeaten 8.5/10 each at 5th Bangalore Rating Open 2023. Bharat became the champion due to better tie-break score, the top seed Chakravarthi was placed second. FM Joydeep Dutta edged past five other players to finish third. The top five finishers remained undefeated. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹700000. The top three prizes were ₹60000 + trophy, ₹50000 and ₹40000 each respectively. Bharat won quite a few tournaments in this year. However, this is his first Rating tournament triumph since October 2022. Fedoseev first at 2nd Chessable Sunway Formentera 2023, Karthik second and Leon third

Leon Luke Mendonca ended Pranav Venkatesh's fantastic run in the final round of 2nd Chessable Sunway Formentera Open 2023. In the battle of teenagers, Pranav's bold approach in the Advance Caro-Kann did not pan out the way he wanted. Leon beautifully maneuvered his pieces and display his great positional understanding. Fedoseev, Karthik Venkataraman, Pranav V and Leon, all four of them ended up with the same score 7/10. Fedoseev won the Armageddon against Karthik to become champion, thus Karthik secured second place. Leon finished third and Pranav fourth, as per Playoff results. Shanmukha Pulli wins SBI Life Rating Open 2023

Shanmukha Pulli, IM Vikramaditya Kulkarni and FM Sauravh Khherdekar scored 7.5/9 each at SBI Life All India Rating Open 2023. Shanmukha won the tournament due to better tie-break score. Top seed of the tournament, Vikramaditya and second seeded Sauravh were placed second and third respectively. Fourth place finisher, Arnav Kherdekar defeated the eventual champion in the fifth round. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹300000. The top three prizes were ₹75000, ₹50000 and ₹30000 each respectively. This is Shanmukha's first Open Rating tournament triumph. Pranav Venkatesh drew with Aryan Chopra to maintain his sole lead 7/9, heading into the final round of 2nd Chessable Sunway Formentera Open 2023. The reigning National Senior champion, Karthik Venkataraman maintained his sole second place 6.5/9 by sharing the point with India's first triple crown champion, Aravindh Chithambaram. IM Prraneeth Vuppala played fantastic chess to draw with the super strong Vladimir Fedoseev. It also secured his third GM-norm. Prraneeth is now 20.6 Elo rating points away from becoming India's next Grandmaster. World Championship Game 13: Tense struggle keeps the score level

Ding Liren faced the Ruy Lopez for the fifth time in Game 13 of FIDE World Championship 2023. He managed to equalize easily out of the opening. The World no.3 sacrificed an exchange and drew the game without having any great difficulty. He felt that he had some advantages, but it was not easy to prove it on the board. He once again showed a stroke of his wisdom while answering a question to the official commentary member, GM Irina Krush. Pranav Venkatesh outplayed Vladimir Fedoseev to emerge sole leader 6.5/8 at 2nd Chessable Sunway Formentera Open 2023. The World Rapid 2017 Silver medalist, sacrificed his bishop for two pawns in the Advance Caro-Kann. However, he was unable to gain enough compensation for it. Pranav seized his opportunity to grab a crucial pawn on his opponent's kingside and converted it into a win without any difficulty. The current National Senior champion, Karthik Venkataraman defeated the Belgium no.1, Daniel Dardha to move to sole second spot 6/8, a half point behind Pranav. IM Prraneeth Vuppala won against GM Daniel Alsina Leal (ESP) to move to 5.5/8. FIDE Trainers' Online Seminar to take place from 5th to 7th May 2023

Five Grandmasters and FIDE Senior Trainers will give lecture at the FIDE Trainers' Online Seminar from 5th to 7th May 2023. World Class trainer and critically acclaimed author, Artur Jussupow, Kasparov's second in his first four world championship matches - Iossir Dorfman, trainer of Karpov, Ivanchuk, Polgar sisters and various national teams all over the world - Adrian Mikhalchisin, former Women's World Champion - Antoaneta Stefanova and last but not the least one of the best trainers of the country - R B Ramesh. All five of them will deliver lectures for a combined total of 16 hours, following that the seminar participants will take a written examination of two hours on the final day. World Championship Game 12: Ding Liren is back in the Match as 'Ian curse' strikes

Ding Liren bounced back by winning a virtually must-win Game 12. The World no.3 unleashed Colle System as his weapon of choice which slightly rattled his opponent. Nepomniachtchi moving his queenside bishop twice in the first eight moves was definitely a sign of nerves. Since Ding needed a win to get back in the match, he tried to create imbalance in the position by taking a lot of risks. It turned his position into completely lost. As Vishy Anand tweeted, the 'Ian curse' struck and things took a 180° turn. Ding Liren was not going to slip this golden opportunity. He managed to seize it and level the score 6-6. 2nd Chessable Sunway Formentera R7: Pranav Venkatesh wins a 105-move marathon against Aravindh

Pranav Venkatesh ended Aravindh Chithambaram's 34-game unbeaten streak which he achieved in 2023. He managed to endure a difficult position where only Aravindh could make a breakthrough which he did. The teenager waited with bated breath for his opportunity. When it arose, Pranav struck and scored a full point. Aryan Chopra suffered a loss against the super-strong Vladimir Fedoseev. First, he made an incorrect decision in the endgame which created some practical chances for Fedoseev. Later he missed his last opportunity in the final stage of the rook and few pawns endgame. Rook and Roll - A Simul with IM Rakesh Kulkarni

Bangalore Chess Club is an all-inclusive chess community with an aim to increase engagement and reach, giving people a platform to play OTB Chess. Last year, they organized a Simul by Karnataka's first and India's 50th Grandmaster, Thej Kumar. On Saturday 8th April, a day before the start of the FIDE World Championship 2023, BCC organized their simul event at Garuda Mall in Bangalore. A total of 20 players were eligible to play against IM Rakesh Kulkarni. All of them qualified in four different methods. Two players - Gurudeep Mathad and Nazeef Khan managed to beat the IM, while Vrajesh, Samaksh Ashok and Rahil Shah managed to draw with him. The IM won the Simul by 16.5-3.5.
