11th Norway Chess 2023 R3: Gukesh bests Mamedyarov in Armageddon

D Gukesh drew his Classical game against Shakhriyar Mamedyarov in Round 3 of 11th Norway Chess 2023. In Armageddon, Gukesh could have finished things much earlier in a very sharp game. However, things were prolonged. The teenager defended correctly and attacked brilliantly to went on to win the game. Hikaru Nakamura and Magnus Carlsen blitzed out their moves to draw the Classical game. Carlsen won Armageddon. Alireza Firouzja and Fabiano Caruana maintained their unbeaten record intact against Nodirbek Abdusattorov and Aryan Tari in Classical games as they both won. Today is the first rest day. 2nd Maharashtra GM 2023 R1: Arya and Goutham score big upsets

Arya Bhakta and Goutham Krishna H scored big upsets in the first round of 2nd Maharashtra GM 2023. Arya Bhakta used his theoretical knowledge in the Ruy Lopez to gain upper hand. Later he capitalized on his opponent GM Akash G's blunder in time trouble. Goutham Krishna H gained positional advantage in the middlegame against GM Alexei Fedorov. When he was low on time, he blundered in time trouble. Thankfully, his veteran opponent did not notice and he got away with it. Vidit Gujrathi and Raunak Sadhwani are off to a great start as they defeated Peter Svidler and Nigel Short respectively in the first Classical game. Maharashtra Chess Festival brings forth two world class matches

As a part of the Maharashtra Chess Festival from the 1st to the 6th of June 2023 two matches between 4 world class players will take place in Nagpur. The first match is between India no.3 and the top rated player from Maharashtra GM Vidit Gujrathi taking on the 8-time Russian Champion and the accomplished player Peter Svidler. The second match is between the top rated junior from the state and one of the most promising youngsters in the world of chess Raunak Sadhwani taking on the former World Championship Challenger Nigel Short.

11th Norway Chess 2023 R2: Firouzja survives Mamedyarov's exciting attack

D Gukesh lost the second round of 11th Norway Chess 2023 against Hikaru Nakamura. The teenager made a couple of incorrect bishop retreat. First one cost him a pawn, second one lost his opportunity to stay in the game. Shakhriyar Mamedyarov launched a very exciting attack on Alireza Firouzja's kingside. The former World Rapid champion could not realize his advantage and eventually lost the game. Aryan Tari also missed his opportunity against another former World Rapid champion, Nodirbek Abdusattorov. Later he went on to lose the game. Magnus Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana won their respective Armageddon against Wesley So and Anish Giri. Round 3 starts today from 5 p.m. local time, 8:30 p.m. IST. Viani Antonio Dcunha dominates Akshayakalpa Organic Karnataka State Open Rating 2023

IM Viani Antonio Dcunha drew his final round game against FM Yashas D to become Akshayakalpa Organic Karnataka State Open 2023 champion. He scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 and finished a half point ahead of the field. The last time Viani played Karnataka State Championship was back in 2017. Then also he was the top seed and won the tournament by scoring an unbeaten 8.5/10. His opponent Yashas was placed second. Balkishan Anand, GM Thej Kumar and Chinmay Kowshik also scored 8/9 each. They were placed third to fifth according to tie-breaks. Akshayakalpa Organic Co-Founder and CEO lived up to his oath and scored 5/9. 11th Norway Chess 2023 R1: Gukesh douses Firouzja at his own game, now World no.15

D Gukesh had lost the only game he played against Alireza Firouzja back in 2018. He is not the same player anymore. The teenager has improved by leaps and bounds. After the world no.4 missed his opportunity to strike first at Gukesh's kingside, the world no.18 seized his opportunity. He just played fiercely and made the most out of his fantastic positional advantage. This win moved Gukesh up to world no.15 in the live ratings. Fabiano Caruana broke his eight-year-long jinx not being able to beat the world no.1. He defeated Magnus Carlsen after he made a mistake in a double rook and knight endgame which was already spiraling out of control. Round 2 starts today from 5 p.m. local time, 8:30 p.m. IST. 23rd Dubai Open 2023 R3-4: Aravindh Chitambaram emerges sole leader 4/4

Aravindh Chithambaram defeated previous round leader, Vahap Sanal (TUR) to gain sole lead at 23rd Dubai Open 2023. Yangyi Yu (CHN) and M Amin Tabatabaei (IRI) are the only two players trailing by a half point at 3.5/4. Aravindh will face the top seed Yangyi in the fifth round. Vahap made the incorrect exchange which opened up the f-file and worsened his position further. Aditya Mittal scored a nice win over Ilia Smirin (ISR). The latter made a couple of inaccuracies in the rook endgame which Aditya capitalized on. Aditya, Arjun Erigaisi, B Adhiban and Harsha Bharathakoti are at 3/4 each. 11th Norway Chess 2023 Blitz: Gukesh beats Carlsen for the first time in a rated game on his 17th birthday

D Gukesh became the first Indian teenager to beat Magnus Carlsen in a rated Blitz game. Last year, Gukesh became the youngest ever to beat Magnus Carlsen but that was an online event. This win is sweeter because Gukesh did it in his first-ever rated Blitz game against the World no.1. The icing on the cake is, it was on his 17th birthday. He defeated Anish Giri and drew against Hikaru Nakamura. The birthday boy scored 2.5/9 and finished tenth. Carlsen also did not have the best day as he scored only 50%, 4.5/9 to finish seventh. The 44th Chess Olympiad Gold medalist, Nodirbek Abdusattorov scored 6/9 to win the Blitz tournament. Akshayakalpa Karnataka State 2023 R7-8: Viani eyes victory

IM Viani Antonio Dcunha seems to be completely unstoppable. He is playing at a different level than others. So far he is yet to show a chink in his armor at Akshayakalpa Organic Karnataka State Open Rating 2023. He defeated Augustin A and then FM Sharan Rao. Sharan and his seventh round opponent had a 4.5 hours long grueling draw. It drained them both and they went on to lose their penultimate round. FM Yashas D defeated Parthasarathy to move to 7.5/8, a half point behind the leader. Viani just needs to score in the final round to become champion, while his opponent Yashas must win to secure first place. 23rd Dubai Open 2023 R1-2: Aravindh, Abhijeet and Adhiban at 2/2

Aravindh Chithambaram, B Adhiban and Abhijeet Gupta are the only three Indians among the 13 players at 2/2. The 23rd Dubai Open 2023 Category A (>2200) has a total of 81 players, 47 of them are GMs. That definitely speaks volumes about the strength of the tournament. Aravindh prevailed over Karthik Venkataraman in a battle of the reigning National champions. It seemed like Karthik should be able to hold a draw when he blundered in the final moments of the endgame. Abhimanyu Mishra (USA) attempted to provide a futile resistance in a rook and opposite color bishop endgame which seemed Abhijeet's win to be a matter of eventuality. Band Stand Ka Raja wins the scenic GCL Invitational at Bandra Fort

The Global Chess League by Tech Mahindra and FIDE with Vishy Anand as a key partner, will bring forth something truly unique to the world of chess. The event is going to begin in the month of June from the 21st. Before that there are going to be five invitational events taking place in five major cities of the world - Mumbai, Dubai, London, Berlin and New York. The event in Mumbai called the GCL Invitational took place on the 26th of May 2023 and we have an illustrated report to tell you all that happened. 

Akshayakalpa Karnataka State 2023 R5-6: Viani, Sharan, Augustin and Parthasarathy score a double hat-trick

IM Viani Antonio Dcunha, FM Sharan Rao, Augustin A and Parthasarathy R are the four leaders with a 6/6 score. 10-year-old Siddhanth Poonja held GM Thej Kumar M S to a solid draw in the fifth round. Dilip Kumar Pedda caused an upset against WIM Isha Sharma. First nine out of top ten games ended decisively in Round 6. Sharan scored a quick win over Niranjan J Warrier and became the first person to score a double hat-trick at this event. IM Viani Antonio Dcunha cruised his way to the sixth victory of the event against Gavi Siddayya. India's 50th and Karnataka's first GM Thej Kumar played three Blindfold Simultaneous Exhibition matches after his two Classical games and won them all. Leonid Milov wins 7th Bodensee Open, Anwesh Upadhyaya second

GM Leonid Milov (GER) scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 to win 7th Bodensee Open 2023. IM Anwesh Upadhyaya and GM Ilmars Starostits (LAT) scored 7/9 each. They were placed second and third respectively according to tie-breaks. Anwesh drew against both Leonid and Ilmars. All three podium finishers remained undefeated. The top three prizes were €800, €600 and €500 each respectively. The nine-day rating tournament was organized by Schachklub Bregenz. This was Anwesh's first Classical rating tournament since July 2022. So an unbeaten second place finish and gaining 12.9 Elo rating points is certainly a great result.
