Gukesh glorious at Armageddon Championship Series: Asia and Oceania

D Gukesh defeated Nodirbek Abdusattorov in the Finals to win the Armageddon Championship Series: Asia and Oceania. Since it is a double elimination event, after losing to Abdusattorov in the first match of the Finals by 1.5-0.5, Gukesh got a second opportunity. He seized it by beating the former World Rapid champion with the exact same score. Gukesh on his way towards the victory defeated the following players - Yangyi Yu, Abdusattorov and Vladimir Kramnik. The saga of the 44th Olympiad Gold medalists - Abdusattorov and Gukesh adds a new chapter in this television and spectator friendly event developed by World Chess. Vahap Sanal wins Fagernes GM Open 2023, Abhimanyu Puranik second

GM Abhimanyu Puranik drew with GM Eduardas Rozentalis (LTU) in the final round of Fagernes GM Open 2023. GM Vahap Sanal defeated GM Aditya Mittal. Both Vahap and Abhimanyu finished with the same score 7.5/9. Vahap won the tournament due to better tie-breaks and Abhimanyu was adjudged second. Both received €2000 each as the prize money gets shared among players in the same point group. GM Samvel Ter-Sahalyan (ARM) scored sole 7/9 to finish third. He earned €800. GM Sethuraman S P made a strong comeback to finish fifth on tie-breaks scoring 6.5/9. World Championship Game 1: Ding's daunting defense against Nepomniachtchi

The first game of the FIDE World Championship 2023 between Ian Nepomniachtchi and Ding Liren was an interesting encounter. It certainly seemed like the match will have an unusual start in terms of result. The world no.3 was in quite a bit of a pickle but he lived up to what he is known for - incredible defensive skill. The Chinese might not have played a lot of tournaments or rated games since the travel restrictions were imposed in 2020 due to the pandemic, one thing which should not be forgotten is his 100-game unbeaten streak. In the post-game press conference, we all got to know that Richard Rapport's creative side and the fondness of '80s music are one of the many reasons, why the new Romania no.1 is his second. Titas Stremavicius wins 43rd San Sebastian Open 2023, Swayams Mishra second

GM Titas Stremavicius and GM FT Swayams Mishra, both scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 each at 43rd San Sebastian Open 2023. The Lithuania no.2 won the tournament due to better tie-break score. Thus, Swayams was placed second. GM Misa Pap (SRB) edged past three more players scoring 7/9 to finish third on tie-breaks. The top three prizes were €14000 + beret, €900 and €600 along with a trophy each respectively. The eight-day nine-round rating tournament organized by Federación Gipuzkoana de Ajedrez witnessed the participation of 134 players including 5 GMs, 7 IMs and a WGM from 16 countries across the world. Last month, one of the most successful trainers of India, GM Swayams played his first Classical rating tournament in over three years.

Abhimanyu Puranik on the verge of winning Fagernes GM Open 2023

GM Abhimanyu Puranik defeated IM Tor Fredrik Kaasen (NOR) to inch closer to clinching Fagernes GM Open 2023. Abhimanyu maintains his sole lead 7/8, heading into the final round. He will Lithuania no.5 GM Eduardas Rozentalis in Round 9. Turkey no.4 GM Vahap Sanal is the sole player trailing by a half point at 6.5/8. He is followed by four players including two Indians - IM Koustav Chatterjee and GM Aditya Mittal at 6/8 each. WIM Savitha Shri B has become India's 25th Woman Grandmaster. Savitha, FM Tanmay Chopra, Sanket Chakravarty and WGM Nandhidhaa P V need a draw each in their respective final round games to score an IM-norm. FIDE World Championship Match 2023 officially opened

The FIDE World Championship 2023 was opened on Friday 7th April in Astana, Kazakhstan. Ian Nepomniachtchi got the white pieces at the draw of lots. He will have the color white in Game 1. The 14-game match starts on Sunday 9th April from 3 p.m. local time, 2:30 p.m. IST. For the first time since 2013, a World Championship match will not feature Magnus Carlsen. As the World no.1 decided to relinquish his title and not defend, we are guaranteed to get a new World Champion this month. Who do you think will win it? Ajay Karthikeyan clinches 1st RCA Rapid Rating Open 2023

IM Ajay Karthikeyan scored an unbeaten 7.5/8 to win 1st RCA Rapid Rating Open 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. Six players - IM FT Muthaiah Al, GM Laxman R R, Lokesh N, IM Hari Madhavan N B, IM Sai Agni Jeevitesh J and IM P Saravana Krishnan scored 7/8 each. They were placed second to seventh respectively according to tie-breaks. Apart from Lokesh and Saravana, the remaining five among top seven, remained undefeated. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹200000. The top three prizes were ₹25000 + trophy, ₹20000 and ₹15000 each respectively. GM Abhimanyu Puranik scored an emphatic victory over IM Elham Abdulrauf (NOR) in the seventh round of Fagernes GM Open 2023. He has gained a sole lead 6/7. Four players - GM Vahap Sanal (TUR), GM Samvel Ter-Sahakyan (ARM), IM Tor Fredrik Kaasen (NOR) and GM Aditya Mittal are trailing by a half point at 5.5/7 each. IM Vantika Agrawal bounced back with a victory over Shazil Shehzad (NOR). She is currently the highest scoring female player 5/7. The penultimate round of the 1st Indore International GM Open was very intense - no less than 7 players were fighting to get the sole lead! Two players succeeded in their pursuit, while others drew their games. IM Viani D'Cunha took down the tournament top seed Levan Pantsulaia, and IM Nitish Belurkar defeated GM Boris Savchenko in the top board. As it stands right now, both Viani and Nitish have 7.5/9 points going into the final round, while 4 other players follow them with 7/9. IM Chakravarthi Reddy M scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win CCS Chess Festival Classic Rating Open 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. Former World Amateur Below 2000 champion, Peter Anand scored 8/9 to secure sole second position. He won eight games and lost one to IM Ramnathan Balasubramaniam. 58-year-old veteran, Kiran Panditrao scored an impressive 7.5/9 to finish third. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹1000000. The top three prizes were ₹100000, ₹60000 and ₹40000 along with a trophy each respectively. It was an exciting 8th round in the 1st Indore International GM Open. The leaders in the top 2 boards drew their games, but it was a raging fight in the other live boards! Saurabh Choubey wins 3rd Rangpur Rating Open 2023

Saurabh Choubey scored an unbeaten 5.5/6 to win 3rd Rangpur Rating Open 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. CM Sajid Sakline Mostafa (BAN) and Golam Mostafa Bhuiyan (BAN) made 5/6 each. They were placed second and third respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was Tk 75000. The top three prizes were Tk 13000, 10000 and 8000 each respectively. The former Madhya Pradesh State Under-25 and Rapid champion, Saurabh has won quite a few Rapid and Blitz events. However, this is his first Classical Rating tournament triumph. Abhimanyu, Samvel and GM Vahap Sanal (TUR) are currently in a three-way lead 5/6. Top seed of the tournament, GM Sethuraman S P defeated GM Kaido Kulaots (EST) to take his score 4.5/6. Eight players including three Indians are at 4.5/6 each. They are - GM Aditya Mittal, IM Koustav and GM Sethuraman. WGM Nandhidhaa P V scored a fine victory over IM Sammed Shete. She is now at 4/6.
