ChessBase India training camp: A powerful start

It is said that to enjoy chess, one must strive to improve in it. In the modern world, there are various ways of chess improvement - learning from video courses, reading top-class chess literature, playing tournaments regularly. But one thing which is absolutely necessary in order to do serious improvement in chess is undergo proper training from a good coach. Chessbase India took a very important step in this direction, when we started the Chessbase India Academy in Bhopal. To kick off the academy, we held a training camp with 11 players! On Chess, Spirituality, and Philosophy: A conversation with GM Jonathan Rowson

This is a deep conversation with GM Jonathan Rowson. The Scottish GM is not only a strong players (peak rating of 2599), but also a deep thinker, a spiritual person, a philosopher and much more. In this conversation with IM Sagar Shah, Jonathan speaks about how he wrote books like Seven Deadly Chess Sins and Chess for Zebras as well as his latest book - Moves that Matter. Jonathan is currently in India in Kerala and he speaks about his affiliation to the country and how the country has grown on him. We also discuss about Jonathan's life beyond chess, his favourite books and his purpose of life. Not to be missed is his best game against GM Jonathan Parker where his opponent resigned in a position with equal material.

Ravi Teja wins CCS Chess Festival Blitz Rating Open 2023

IM Ravi Teja S, FM Prasannaa S and GM Bharath Subramaniyam H - all three scored 8/9 each. Ravi won the CCS Chess Festival Blitz Rating Open 2023 due to better tie-breaks. Prasannaa and Bharath were placed second and third. Bharath was the only one to remain undefeated among the top ten. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹200000. The top three prizes were ₹20000, ₹12000 and ₹8000 along with a trophy each respectively. This was Ravi's first tournament victory since February 2022 and third podium finish of the year so far. 2nd Menorca Open R6: Aryan Chopra emerges sole leader

GM Pranav Venkatesh had a well contested draw against GM D Gukesh. GM Aryan Chopra denied a hat-trick to GM Raja Rithvk R. After scoring two fantastic wins, Rithvik faltered against Aryan in the endgame. He made an incorrect choice to exchange a bunch of pieces and landed himself in a lost rook endgame. Aryan is currently the sole leader 5.5/6. Eight players including four Indians - Gukesh, Pranav V, Harsha and Prraneeth are trailing by a half point at 5/6 each. IM Prraneeth Vuppala defeated GM Visakh N R in a sharp skirmish. Asian Continental 2022 Silver medalist GM Harsha Bharathakoti got the better of the reigning National Senior 2022 champion, GM Karthik Venkataraman in a rematch from their last event. Savitha Shri B becomes the 25th Woman Grandmaster of India

A day after India got its 24th Woman Grandmaster in the form of Rakshitta Ravi, Savitha Shri B became India's 25th WGM. The World Rapid Women 2022 Bronze medalist, earned her final WGM-norm at Fagernes GM Open 2023. Just like Rakshitta, after becoming a WGM, Savitha also secured her maiden IM-norm at the same event. The teenager from Chennai earned her maiden WGM-norm by winning the Asian Junior Girls 2021. Seven months later, she secured her second norm at Pardubice Open 2022 and also crossed 2300 for the first time in her career. 2nd Menorca Open R4-5: Raja Rithvik crushes Fier and Fedoseev

GMs D Gukesh, Pranav Venkatesh, Raja Rithvik R and Aryan Chopra are the four leaders at the conclusion of Round 5 at 2nd Menorca Open 2023. All four of them are at 4.5/5 each. Raja Rithvik scored two fantastic victories against GM Alexandr Fier (BRA) and GM Vladimir Fedoseev in Round 4 and 5 respectively. In both games, Rithvik played bravely and took matters into his hands to beat his opponents. Pranav drew with Jorden before beating GM Hans Niemann (USA) in a grueling battle. The teenager handled the queen and minor piece better than the American. Gukesh and Aryan scored two convincing wins to move to the top of the standings. World Championship Game 4: Ding Liren delivers equalizer by demolishing Nepomniachtchi

World no.3 Ding Liren struck back in Game 4 of FIDE World Championship 2023. Ding might have been following his second Richard Rapport's decade old game. However, he clearly mentioned that he was on his own after the tenth move. He made a very nice pawn sacrifice on move no.15 to gain total control of the center. After a few moves, his opponent Ian Nepomniachtchi decided against keeping his bishop on the board. Then he made a positional mistake which Ding initially did not consider sacrificing an exchange. Once 28...Nd4 was on the board, it immediately sprung into his mind. It is quite evident that Ding Liren is certainly feeling more comfortable, both on the board and at the press conference. Rakshitta Ravi becomes the 24th Woman Grandmaster of India

On 7th of April 2023, 17-year-old WIM Rakshitta Ravi defeated GM Sahaj Grover to score her final WGM-norm at First Saturday GM April in Budapest, Hungary. With three rounds to spare, she fulfilled the title requirements and became India's 24th Woman Grandmaster. Rakshitta did not slow down after becoming a WGM. She drew her seventh round game against GM Milan Pacher (SVK) to earn her maiden IM-norm. Last year, the teenager from Chennai won the 36th National Junior Girls, Silver and Bronze at Asian Junior Girls 2022 in her long list of laurels. The first WGM-norm was earned at Pardubice Open 2019 in Czech Republic. She crossed 2300 in August 2019 FIDE Rating list. A little over four months later she secured her second WGM-norm at Sunway Sitges Open 2019 in Spain. After three years and nearly four months later, she became a Woman Grandmaster. 2nd Menorca Open R1-3: Dhulipalla Bala Chandra Prasad defies World no.20 Gukesh

World no.20 GM D Gukesh took the challenge to defend his Menorca Open title. In the second round, he faced stiff resistance from IM Dhulipalla Bala Chandra Prasad. He held the 44th Olympiad Gold medalist to a draw. Gukesh won his third round game to move to 2.5/3. GM Pranav Venkatesh and GM Aditya Mittal are the two Indians who have made a perfect start 3/3. They are among the eight leaders. 26 players are trailing them at 2.5/3 each. A dozen Indian players are among them. World Championship Game 3: Calm before Storm?

The third game of the FIDE World Championship 2023 was a relatively quiet draw. The first 16 moves followed Giri-Ding's game from the Chessable Masters 2022. The world no.3 deviated with 17.N1e2 this time. His team and supporters were expecting him to find something better than what Giri did in the game. As Nepomniachtchi mentioned in the post-game press conference, it is quite difficult to disrupt the equality when both sides are making reasonable moves. One thing is for sure, Ding seemed more confident at this stage now more than earlier. He himself said, "I would like to thank my friends. Alexandr Fier wins 49th La Roda Open 2023, Aravindh Chithambaram second and Pranav Venkatesh third

GM Alexandr Fier drew with GM Aravindh Chithambaram in the final round of 49th La Roda Open 2023. The Brazil no.2 won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Aravindh was placed second. Seven players scored 7/9 each. GM Pranav Venkatesh, GM Iniyan P and GM S L Narayanan secured third, fourth and fifth place respectively. GM Vignesh N R scored 6.5/9 to finish at tenth place. Thus, Indians claimed five out of the top ten places. The total prize fund of the tournament was €15000. The top three prizes were €3500, €2200 and €1000 along with a trophy each. Srija Seshadri and Varshini spearhead Bangladesh Police to clinch Walton 1st Division Women's Chess League

Top seed of the tournament, Bangladesh Police scored a perfect 14/14 to win Walton 1st Division Women's Chesss League. WGM Srija Seshadri and WGM Varshini V were the only two Indians taking part in this event. They both scored 7/7 and played a crucial role in their team's first place finish. Second seeded Bangladesh Navy scored 12/14 to secure second place. Third seeded Shahin Chess Club made 10/14 to finish third. The top three prizes were Tk 25000, 15000 and 10000 along with trophy and medals each respectively. Srija and Varshini also won the individual board prize on their respective boards. Jubin Jimmy jubilant at CCS Chess Festival Rapid Rating Open 2023

IM Jubin Jimmy, Bharat Kumar Reddy Poluri and GM Bharath Subramaniyam H - all three scored 8/9 each. Jubin won the CCS Chess Festival Rapid Rating Open 2023 due to better tie-breaks. He was the only one to remain unbeaten among the top three and also managed to beat both remaining podium finishers. Bharat and Bharath were placed second and third. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹300000. The top three prizes were ₹30000, ₹20000 and ₹14000 along with a trophy each respectively. Christian Bauer wins 10th Martinique Open - Joel Gratien Memorial, Priyanka second and Karthik third

GM Christian Bauer (FRA), WGM Priyanka Nutakki and GM Karthik Venkataraman, scored 7/9 each at 10th Martinique Open - Joel Gratien Memorial. Bauer won the tournament due to better tie-breaks. Priyanka and Karthik were adjudged second and third respectively. The Asian Continental Women 2022 Silver medalist, defeated two GMs in the last two rounds - Romain Edouard (FRA) and Harsha Bharathakoti, to make a strong second place finish. WIM Mounika Akshaya held the reigning National Senior 2022 champion, Karthik to a draw. Both Harsha and Karthik's championship hopes were shattered in the final round. World Championship Game 2: The Self-Destruction of Ding Liren

The second game of the FIDE World Championship 2023 was a lopsided game. After a brief spark of 4.h3 which got the chess world talking, soon Ding Liren started making questionable choices. An uncanny exchange of 12.Nxf6+ made it seem like, it is not world no.3 who is playing. By move no.18, the Chinese landed himself in a lost position against Ian Nepomniachtchi. He had no trouble wrapping up things and score his first win at a World Championship after a dozen games. Unlucky for some, number 13 turned out to be the number where Nepo scored his first win. Ding Liren must regroup himself quickly if he wants to etch his name in history. Today is a rest day. Game 3 starts tomorrow, Wednesday 12th April at 3 p.m. local time, 2:30 p.m. IST.
