Team World wins Kazakhstan vs The World match 73-55

Team World defeated Kazakhstan 38.5-25.5 in Blitz to win the match overall 73-55. The Junior girls, IM Nurgyul Salimova (BUL) and WFM Afruza Khamdamova (UZB) are the top scorers for team World - 6.5/8 each. Afruza also remained the only undefeated player out of the 16 in the Blitz event. The second-highest scorer of the team is GM Nana Dzagnidze (GEO) 5.5/8. GM Harika Dronavalli scored 4.5/8 and India's latest WGM Savitha Shri B 4/8. Team World's biggest margin victories were by 6.5-1.5 in match no.3 and 7. 2nd Chessable Sunway Formentera R1: Mahitosh stuns Aditya Mittal

FM Mahitosh Dey scored a big upset against GM Aditya Mittal in the first round of 2nd Chessable Sunway Formentera Open 2023. The sole IM-norm holder, Mahitosh capitalized on his opportunity when his opponent went for a wrong exchange which made his king vulnerable. Later when he got a chance to fight back, he missed it and Mahitosh scored the full point. WIM Anastasiya Rakhmangulova (UKR) scored the only other upset of the round when she defeated the runner-up of 2nd Menorca Open, GM Pranav V. GMs Aravindh Chithambaram, Aryan Chopra, Leon Luke Mendonca, Pranav Anand, Karthik Venkataraman and Raja Rithvik R have made a winning start. This 17-year-old has built an AI driven software for visually impaired - Siddhanth Lohia

Siddhanth Lohia is just 17 years old and is studying in 11th grade at the SevenOaks boarding school in London. Two years ago after watching a video on ChessBase India, where we had Aryan Joshi and Soundarya Pradhan, two of India's top visually impaired chess players, talk about the issues with accessibility, Siddhanth made up his mind to do something special. He learnt about AI from the workshop that he did when he was 15. Putting that to use, he has come up with something truly special. It is a software which a visually impaired chess player can install on his machine and then just press a button and it can give him the position of the chess pieces on the board that is present on the screen. It is an extremely important innovation and can really help the visually impaired chess players take their game to the next level.

World Championship Game 7: Ding Liren crumbles in time trouble

The FIDE World Championship 2023 witnessed a fourth consecutive decisive game. However, this time it did not end in any of the previous manner. Ian Nepomniachtchi defeated Ding Liren on time. The position was lost too for the World no.3. He made a correct exchange sacrifice. However, he could not maintain a stronghold to split the point. Instead, he erred which allowed the World no.2 to capitalize on his opponent's mistake and win the game. The score is now 3-4 in Nepomniachtchi's favor. Four consecutive games were won by the player with the white pieces and wins were traded. Will we see the pattern to continue? Today is a rest day. Team World wins the Rapid event against Kazakhstan 34.5-29.5

Team Kazakhstan made a fantastic start on the second day by defeating team World in three consecutive matches. Each of them were won by a minimum margin 4.5-3.5. In the final round of the Rapid event, team World bounced back by winning 5.5-2.5 against team Kazakhstan. WIM Zsoka Gaal (HUN), IM Nurgyul Salimova (BUL) and WGM Savitha Shri B scored the key victories for World, while the remaining five games ended in draws. Thus, team World defeated team Kazakhstan 34.5-29.5 in the Rapid portion of te match. The Blitz event will be played in the same format with a time control of 3 minutes + 2 seconds increment. Cademic Chess Carnival 2023 offers a prize fund of ₹1299999, starts this Saturday 22nd April

Cademic Chess Center invites you to Cademic Chess Carnival comprising four consecutive rating tournaments - Rapid, Blitz, Classical and Below 1600. It starts this Saturday 22nd April. The total prize fund combining all four events is ₹1299999. The total prize fund for each of the four events are: Rapid - ₹300000, Blitz - ₹99999, Classical - ₹500000 and Below 1600 - ₹400000. Last date of registration is 20th April. Three GMs and seven IMs have already confirmed their participation for the Rapid and Blitz events. About 350 players in Rapid, 320+ in Blitz, over 350 in Classical and about 450 players have registered for Below 1600 event. So hurry up and register yourself if you still have not done it yet. Kazakhstan vs World Day 1: Team World leads 18.5-13.5

One of the side events of the ongoing FIDE World Championship Match is a Women's rapid rating team event. It is played in Scheveningen format which means each player faces all members of their opponent's team. GM Harika Dronavalli representing team World and GM Zhansaya Abdumalik (KAZ) are the only two players who remained undefeated on the first day. The encounter between them ended in a draw. Although, Harika at one point had a substantial advantage against her opponent. At the conclusion of the four rounds, team World is currently leading 18.5-13.5 against team Kazakhstan. Harika and Savitha set to battle in Kazakhstan vs World, a team match starting today

One of the side events of the FIDE World Championship Match will be a match featuring the best female players of Kazakhstan against a team of international top stars representing the world. India no.2 GM Harika Dronavalli and India no.4 WIM Savitha Shri B will be the only two Indian playing for the team - World. Each team will consist of eight players, with four of them representing the age groups U20, U18, U16, and U14. The team 'World' will have World no.1 GM Hou Yifan (CHN) along with GM Nana Dzagnidze (GEO), IM Gunay Mammadzada (AZE), IM Nurgyul Salimova (BUL), WIM Zsoka Gaal (HUN) and WFM Afruza Khamdamova (UZB) along with the aforementioned Harika and Savitha. Gukesh convincingly defends Menorca Open title, Pranav Venkatesh second

It is not everyday we get to see a 2700+ playing an open tournament, let alone win it for two years in-a-row. GM D Gukesh won the inaugural edition last year and became World no.80. Heading into the second edition, he was World no.20 who had 2730 Elo rating points. After nine rounds, he scored an unbeaten 7/9, defeated Pranav Venkatesh 1.5-0.5 in the Blitz Playoffs to retain his Menorca Open title. Although ten players finished with the same score 7/9, it was Gukesh and Pranav who had all three of their tie-break scores exactly the same. After penultimate round, Gukesh was World no.17 in the live ratings and he still is. The teenager is gaining two Elo rating points. In one year, Gukesh climbed from World no.80 to 17 and he did not forget his path towards becoming the Elite. World Championship Game 6: The Lon'Ding' System strikes Nepo

Everyone looks forward to the sixth game of the FIDE World Championship due to the historical significance of it. This time also it did not disappoint. Ding Liren scored a beautiful win where his opponent Ian Nepomniachtchi had to resign. The threat was to checkmate with a queen sacrifice which was unstoppable. The world no.2 could not make up his mind about the choice of opening and he decided to go for the London System at the very last moment. He wanted to play something which he was comfortable with and in the end it worked out. Four out of six games had decisive results and this is undoubtedly the most thrilling game of them all. Will Gukesh win Menorca Open for the second year in-a-row?

The defending champion GM D Gukesh defeated the previous day leader, GM Aryan Chopra to get back in the lead. He drew the penultimate round game against the Netherlands no.2 GM Jorden van Foreest to move closer to a second consecutive triumph. IM Koustav Chatterjee defeated GM Xu Yi (CHN) and GM Alexandr Fier (BRA) in consecutive games to move to 6.5/8. Gukesh and Koustav are the only two Indians among seven leaders. They are followed by another seven players including five Indians - GM Pranav Venkatesh, GM Aryan, GM Harsha Bharathakoti, IM Prraneeth Vuppala and the reigning National champion, GM Karthik Venkataraman at 6/8 each. World Championship Game 5: Nepomniachtchi outplays Ding Liren

FIDE World Championship 2023 just keeps getting interesting by each game. Three out of five games have been decisive so far. It goes without saying that this has been the most dramatic World Championship match in recent memory. Ian Nepomniachtchi outplayed Ding Liren right from the opening till the very end. The critical moment according to the world no.3 was when his opponent played 29.Nf5 when he should have opted for Qf6 instead of 29...Nxf5 which he played. Nepo was staring daggers at his opponent for the better part of the game. His reasoning behind the action was that he 'missed him a little on rest day'.
