Sethuraman misses a golden opportunity against Anish Giri

In the second game of round three of World Cup 2017 Sethuraman had the white pieces against Anish Giri. He came well prepared to the game and had a winning position for many moves. However, as has happened with Sethu on many occasions in the recent past, he was unable to convert his better position into a full point. Anish Giri who survived this brutal game heaved a sigh of relief. Vidit drew his second game with the black pieces against Ding Liren. Report with pictures and analysis from Tbilisi.

Vidit misses his chance against Ding, Sethu makes a solid draw

We are now into the third round of the World Cup 2017. Our biggest hopes Vishy Anand and Pentala Harikrishna have been eliminated. However, two young guns Vidit Gujrathi and Sethuraman are keeping the Indian flag flying high. In fact Vidit could have made a very strong first game result by beating Ding Liren. However, he was not able to keep his nerves in the winning position and it ended in a draw. Sethuraman played a solid game against Anish Giri and now has the white pieces to press in the second game. Sethuraman beats Harikrishna at the World Cup 2017

Sethuraman played two excellent rapid games against Harikrishna Pentala to advance to round three of the World Cup 2017. This is the second strong opponent that Sethu has beaten in this event, the first one being Ponomariov. Adhiban gave Nepo a huge scare and was winning the first game comfortably. However, he made an error and finally lost the match. This means that we have only two Indians left at the World Cup 2017. Vidit will face Ding Liren while Sethu will be up against Anish Giri. On 6th of September 2017, India got its 50th and Karnataka its first grandmaster in M.S. Thejkumar. A fantastic positional player who has a deep understanding of chess. But did you know when was it that Thejkumar achieved his final GM norm? 2008! The man had to wait nine years to achieve the magical 2500 Elo mark. He was down and out many times, but there was one person who made Thej believe in himself and never let him give up. It's a story of grit, determination, persistence and true love. He is the golden jubilee GM of India and his story is simply awe-inspiring. 

World Cup 2017 Round 2.1: Vidit's venomous Vietnamese victory!

The first game of round two of the World Cup 2017 was a mixed bag for Indians. Vidit performed phenomenally to beat Le Quang Liem with the black pieces. Adhiban did give Nepomniachtchi a scare, but in the end they agreed to a draw. Harikrishna against Sethuraman was a short draw with nothing much happening in the Berlin Endgame. The big news of the day was Vishy Anand losing to Canadian GM Anton Kovalyov after a speculative knight sacrifice didn't work so well. Three Indians sat at the chess board for round one tiebreaks and two made it out alive, advancing to the second round. Harikrishna and Adhiban showed great bit of concentration and patience to beat their opponents Yuri Gonzalez and Nguyen Ngoc Truongson. Karthikeyan Murali fought hard, but was unable to beat his opponent in round two. Seven Indians went to Tbilisi and after the first round we still have five standing. Dibyendu Barua Chess Academy completes 12 years

One person becoming a grandmaster is great for India's chess. But that same person using his expertise to create many more grandmasters is an unparalleled contribution. On 5th September 2005, there was a dawn of a new era in Kolkata. The birth of Dibyendu Barua Chess Academy (DBCA) took place on this very day twelve years ago. And in these twelve years GM Dibyendu Barua, his wife Saheli Dhar-Barua and the entire team of DBCA have done so much for the chess in our country. In this article we highlight some of their achievements. World Cup 2017 Round one: Vishy Anand is the sole winner for India

The biggest event of 2017 has begun! Vishy Anand showed good form on the first day and scored a full point against his young Malaysian opponent. The upset of the day was surely Harikrishna's loss against Gonzalez Vidal. Karthikeyan also slumped to a defeat against Vallejo Pons. World Cup 2017 Round 1.2: Three Indians qualify to round two

The World Cup 2017 is a brutal contest. No matter what your rating is, if you make a mistake you will not be sparred. In such a situation six out of the seven Indians managed to survive and are still fighting in the city of Tbilisi after two days of competition. Anand drew his game and progressed to the next round. Vidit and Sethuraman scored wins and made it through. The real heroes were surely Pentala Harikrishna and Karthikeyan Murali who came back from a one point deficit. World Cup 2017: Time to unleash the beast mode

Round one of the World Cup 2017 is now just a few hours away. The Indian players look pretty relaxed and in great spirits for the start of the event. Adhiban Baskaran who spoke to ChessBase India, said, "It's now time to unleash the beast mode!" What we are looking at is all of our seven Indian players qualifying to the next round. While Anand and Hari have relatively easier opponents, Vidit and Adhiban have much more work to do. Sethuraman, Deep and Karthikeyan have higher rated opponents and we are looking forward to see them pulling off some upsets!

Rasht wins Asian Team Chess Championship 2017

The top seeded Iranian team Rasht, registered a convincing 4–0 victory over Dubai in the final round to win Asian Cities Team Chess Championship 2017 and clinch the Dubai Cup with 16 match points. Team Bhubaneshwar finished second and Dhaka had to settle for the third spot. It was yet another feature in the cap of Kalinga Institute of Information Technology (KIIT), the premises where this world class tournament was held. Vishy Anand became the World Champion by winning the knock-out tournament in 2000. However, it was not an undisputed title as Kramnik, the newly crowned classical world champion did not participate. Also Kasparov and Karpov gave the event a miss. The Indian champion won his first undisputed world title in 2007 when he triumphed at the eight-player double Round Robin tournament in Mexico. We are celebrating ten years of this memorable event when India got its first undisputed World Champion. And Peter Heine Nielsen who was Anand's second at the event tell us all about it. 

FIDE World Cup 2017: The super seven Indians!

Seven Indians have reached Tbilisi, Georgia to fight for the two spots at the World Cup 2017. After a long time we will see Vishy Anand and Pentala Harikrishna participating in the same event. The new entrant in 2700+ group Vidit Gujrathi will be looking to prove himself here and so would the FIDE President's wild card nomination Adhiban Baskaran. Sethuraman would like to keep up his form of 2015 World Cup, while Karthikeyan Murali and Deep Sengupta will try and send as many higher rated opponents back home packing as possible. First Friday IM norm tournament to begin in Malaysia

The First Saturday tournaments in Budapest, Hungary have been highly successful. A lot of top players have made their IM and GM norms over there, most famous being Fabiano Caruana. But there was nothing of that sort in Asia where players from India and the surrounding countries could play in a Round Robin event and fight for their norms. Now, Peter Long's Institute of Chess Excellence along with Malaysian Chess Federation has organized the First Friday Round Robin IM norm tournament from 6th to 11th of October in Kuala Lumpur.
