CBIJ #12: To the children, for the children, by the children!

ChessBase India Juniors (CBIJ) began in March 2018 with its inaugural article. 13-year-old Avathanshu Bhat has worked hard in the last nine months and we have reached the 12th edition of CBIJ, which celebrates the achievements of the juniors of Indian chess. From being alone, Avathanshu's team has doubled as Arhan Anand, a youngster from Bangalore now annotates games in his inimitable style. Can Aravindh do it in 2018 what he couldn't do in 2017?

Aravindh Chithambaram has played an excellent tournament at the National Championship in Jammu. After 12 rounds he is on 9.5/12, half a point ahead of the field. In round 12 he played a wonderful game to beat GM Karthikeyan Murali from the black side of the Sicilian Dragon. Exactly a year ago Aravindh had a chance to become the National Champion 2017. He had lost his nerves and his chance of winning the tournament. If he is able to keep his nerves today he can become the national champion for the first time in his chess career, win Rs.5,00,000 and a spot in the World Cup 2019. Do you think he can do it? 27th The Telegraph 2018 round 6: Rajdeep, Mitrabha, Koustav and Sanket are in the lead

All top four seeds, Rajdeep Sarkar, Mitrabha Guha, Koustav Chatterjee and Sanket Chakravarty are in perfect sync with a score of 6.0/6. Koustav Chatterjee was the first one among all of them to score his victory. Swapnil Priyadarshi is the only player from Odisha who is half-point behind the leaders. There are 22 players who are at 5.0/6. Tomorrow's round 7 will be interesting as all four leaders will face first real challenge of the tournament as Rajdeep faces Sanket and Koustav faces Mitrabha respectively. Nationals 2018 Round 10+11: Stany or Aravindh?

Usually after achieving a norm or title, players lose their game. That's because they tend to get a bit relaxed after their achievement. However, that was not the case with Stany who played a fine game after becoming India's 58th GM to beat Deep Sengupta. Stany is now one of the leaders with 8.5/11. Aravindh Chithambaram played a good game to beat Vaibhav Suri in eleventh round and join Stany at the top. On 8.0/11, we have a group of five players which include Vaibhav Suri, Deepan Chakkravarthy, Tejas Bakre, Karthikeyan Murali and CRG Krishna. Asian Continental Championship: Ganguly and Rout continue to lead

GM Surya Shekhar Ganguly, following his loss in the previous round, came back with strongly with a win over the top seed of the tournament, Wang Hao, while the number of tournament leaders dropped from eight to two. The other leader to retain his lead going into the penultimate round was Iranian GM Amin Tabatabaei who defeated SP Sethuraman on board four. Meanwhile, Vidit Gujrathi agreed to a short draw against GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov and slipped down a spot on the leaderboard. In the women's group, Padmini Rout continued her stronghold over the event despite her quick draw. With just two rounds to go, she continues to lead by a full point. Round 7 report.

Samriddhaa survives two massive scares at 27th The Telegraph Schools' 2018

Reigning West Bengal State Women's champion and 6th seed of the tournament escaped from the brink of loss against Soumyajit Das of Aditya Academy school in round 5. In round 4 also she narrowly escaped a loss when she miscalculated a tactic. Top four seeds remained unscathed and they are in the lead along with six other players at 5.0/5. Biggest upset of round 4 was, former WB State sub-junior girls' champion Sudipa Haldar blundering a checkmate against Debargha Basu and Mortuza Mahathir Islam (BAN) lost against Srihaan Poddar (PHI). In the fifth round Srihaan caused another upset by defeating Soyamsree Mohanty of Odisha. Asian Continentals: Vidit beats Ganguly to hop into the joint lead

Vidit Gujrathi, after a rather disappointing start to the tournament, has come back with a bang after six rounds. In his sixth round game, he defeated the tournament leader, GM Surya Shekhar Ganguly to make dramatic changes on the leaderboard. After the sixth round, Ganguly, who was the overnight sole leader, is joined by Vidit and six others. SP Sethuraman also took this opportunity to step up and join tournament lead by defeating GM Wen Yang. In the women's group, IM Padmini Rout increased her tournament lead by a full point by defeating Singaporean WGM Gong Qianyun. With three rounds to go, she is now a hot favourite to clinch the title. 27th The Telegraph 2018 round 1-3: 37 players share lead with full point

27th edition of The Telegraph Schools' Chess started 10 months after the previous edition concluded. This time over 425 children from India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Philippines are participating. Youngest player of the meet Aayansh Burman of 4 years 9 months 0 days age made the inaugural move of the tournament. Top seeds had smooth sailing except a few upsets. Ninth seed of the tournament, Aditya Bikram Paul arrived late in the hall and he was shocked by unrated Agnivo Chakraborty in round 1, Shresth Mahapatra held Sadnan Hasan Dihan of Bangladesh to a draw in the 2nd round and Arunika Ghosh defeated Sambarta Banerjee in the 3rd round. Asian Continentals: Indians lead both Open and Women's

Indian players, GM Surya Ganguly and IM Padmini Rout, found themselves on top of the leaderboard in the Open and Women's segments respectively at the close of the fifth round of the Asian Continental Championship. On the top board in the open group, Ganguly steamrolled compatriot SP Sethuraman after the latter fumbled in the early stages of a Spanish Opening. Padmini Rout, who also had the whites in her game against WFM Munkhzul Turmunkh, pulled out a clean win in a Sicilian Najdorf to race ahead of her rivals. India gets its 58th GM and Karnataka its 2nd - Stany GA

He reached a rating of 2500 in July 2017. Since last one and a half year people have considered him as a GM title contender but his GM norms were just not coming. But when you have the strength, the results are bound to arrive. Stany scored his first GM norm at the Lucopen in Lille in 2016, the second GM norm at Gujarat GM Open 2018 and now the final one at National Championship 2018. The fact that he could achieve his final two norms in India speaks volumes about his strength as a chess player. Today, Stany becomes the 58th GM of India. In this report we tell you what Stany feels after becoming a GM, the people responsible for his success and last but not the least we show you one of his favourite games from his chess career till date.

Sunway Sitges 2018: 12-year-old Sreeshwan beats Vassily Ivanchuk!

The Sunway Sitges 2018 is a tournament to follow. Indian GM Sasikiran Krishnan is the fourth seed. We have two young stars of Indian chess Nihal Sarin and Praggnanandhaa playing out there. As if all of this is not enough we have the young talent Gukesh looking to break Karjakin's record of youngest GM in the world. Also worth keeping an eye on is Raunak Sadhwani who recently gave Vishy Anand a scare at the Isle of Man International 2018. However, day one belonged to a 12-year-old from Hyderabad Sreeshwan Maralakshikari, the current under-12 Commonwealth gold medalist, who beat the great Vassily Ivanchuk in just 26 moves. Asian Continentals: Sethuraman, Ganguly lead alongside Wei Yi

SP Sethuraman and Surya Ganguly have found themselves at the top of the leaderboard after four rounds at the 17th Asian Continental Championship in Makati City in Manila, Philippines. After a quick draw against Wei Yi in the third round, GM Ganguly defeated the reigning World Junior Champion, GM Parham Maghsoodloo in the fourth round to move up to the top spot. Wei Yi, the third co-leader after round four defeated Alireza Firouzja in a sharp Sicilian while Sethuraman got the better of compatriot Lalith Babu MR.  

Nationals 2018 Round 8: Vaibhav Suri's beautiful middlegame play

The National Championship 2018 consists of such great players that there are beautiful games being played in each round. It's quite a difficult task to choose the best game of the day, but in the eighth round it was clearly GM Vaibhav Suri who took the honours with some fantastic middlegame play and showing great alertness to beat his strong opponent Swapnil Dhopade. We now have four players in the lead GM Vaibhav Suri, Aravindh Chithambaram, Stany GA and Deep Sengupta. They are followed by seven players on 6.0/8. It happens only with the Indian Tal

Seven out of the thirteen rounds have been completed at the National Championship 2018 that is currently in progress at Jammu from 8th to 18th of December. We have two leaders Aravindh Chithambaram and Anurag Mhamal, both on 6.0/7. They are followed by a pack of players on 5.5/7 who include Deep Sengupta, Vaibhav Suri, Vishnu Prasanna, Stany G.A and Swapnil Dhopade. The two big surprise players of the tournament until now have been Sammed Shete and Harshavardhan G.B. who are on 5.5/7. Although there have been many beautiful games at this event, there was none as spectacular as the draw between Karthikeyan and Rathnakaran from the seventh round which we analyze in this report.  

Amonatov wins Triple C Chess Club November Online Blitz

Farrukh Amonatov of Tajikistan won Triple C Chess Club November Online Blitz 2018 which was held on Playchess on 25th of November 2018. It was a strong Blitz tournament as it starred Idani Pouya, Haik Martirosyan, Lucas van Foreest, Nihal Sarin, R Praggnanandhaa, Debashis Das, Rakesh Kumar Jena, Anwesh Upadhyaya and Padmini Rout. Three players Amonatov, Idani and Praggnanandhaa ended up at 7.0/9. Due to Amonatov beating both Idani and Praggnanandhaa, he became champion. Padmini performed exceptionally well in the tournament and she had luck on her side too. Despite the tournament being a blitz event, we witnessed some fantastic games.
