7th Gashimov Memorial R2-3: Caruana soars to the top

It was a long day for Vishy Anand as he started Round 2 with a loss against Richard Rapport. He had a couple of good chances in the second game, unfortunately he was unable to seize them and the game ended in a draw after 89 moves. The first game of Round 3 went for a 119 moves before he lost against David Navara in a rook vs rook and bishop endgame. The second encounter against the Czech no.1 ended in a draw which means Anand lost both matches 0-3. He is now at 1.0/9. Fabiano Caruana won both his matches to take sole lead 8.0/9. Asian Junior 2021 R1-5: Raahul and Savitha in sole lead 5.0/5

The reigning AICF National Junior Online 2021 champions, IM Raahul V S and WIM Savitha Shri B are the sole leaders with a 100% score 5.0/5 at the conclusion of the fifth round of Asian Junior 2021. Raahul beat top seed GM Mitrabha Guha in an incredible game where both players left everything they had on the board, in the end the former clinched the victory. Savitha also had an interesting encounter with WIM Priyanka K where the latter got an opportunity to save the game which was not at all easy to spot. Indian Chess League will take place in June 2022

The Indian Chess League is all set to take place in June 2022. As announced at the press conference which was held in Delhi on the 14th of December 2021, it will be a cash-rich over the board league with a total prize fund of Rs.2 crore. Gameplan Sports Private limited, the company that has been instrumental in organizing the Tata Steel Chess India tournament in Kolkata, has bought the rights from AICF for a price of Rs. 2 crore per annum. Contracts were exchanged between AICF and Gameplan and the Indian Chess League will soon become a reality. 

Anish Gandhi wins Late Shripad Kulkarni Memorial All India Rating Open

Fourth seeded Anish Gandhi scored 8.5/10, edged past Shriraj Bhosale on tie-breaks to clinch Late Shripad Kulkarni Memorial All India Open 2021. Four players - Ajay Kumar Rai, Yash Kapadi, Om Nagnath Lamkane and Aditya Bartakke scored 8.0/10 each. They were placed third to sixth accoring to tie-breaks. The tournament had the total prize fund of ₹101000 with the first prize being ₹21000 cash and a rolling trophy. It took place from 4th to 9th December at Jaylakshmi Sanskrutik Bhawan, at Kolhapur, Maharashtra. Check out the games of the top two finishers of this event along with photographs. 7th Gashimov Memorial R1: Mamedov beats Anand in Armageddon

Vishy Anand got back to over-the-board action for the first time in five months. He won the last event he played, No Castling World Masters against Kramnik back in July. The maestro won the first Rapid game against Rauf Mamedov, however he lost the second one. Thus, Armageddon was enforced. With less than ten seconds left on the clock and without any increment, it was quite difficult for him to find and most importantly execute the win in so less time. Mamedov won the Armageddon and the match. Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, Richard Rapport and Fabiano Caruana defeated David Navara, Sergey Karjakin and Vugar Asadli each respectively. A pre-requisite for an organization to become world class is to have competent people working for it in key managerial positions. This is exactly what FIDE has done by roping in Dana Reizniece-Ozola as the managing director. A look at her credentials and you can have no doubts about her competency. Dana is a former Minister of Economics of Latvia as well as its Finance Minister! She has a Masters in Business Administration, has been the head of space programs and her list of achievements is quite huge. To add to all of this, she is also a strong chess player - a WGM with an Elo of 2283. At the World Championship 2021 in Dubai, IM Sagar Shah met with Dana and had a detailed interview about her journey of life, becoming FIDE's managing director, her vision for FIDE and much more.

8th Sunway Sitges Open R5: Sethuraman makes a perfect start 5.0/5

Sethuraman outplayed his opponent Denis Kadric (BIH) to score his fifth consecutive victory and gain sole lead heading into the only rest day of 8th Sunway Sitges Open 2021 Group A. Abhimanyu Puranik scored an academic victory to be in a pack of seven players at 4.5/5. Neelotpal Das had a very good opportunity to beat Aydin Suleymanli (AZE), he missed, and it ended in a draw. Neelotpal, Arjun Erigaisi and Mary Ann Gomes are at 4.0/5 each. Daniel Dardha brought Soumya's great run to a halt as she was unable to find a draw in the same color bishop ending. While most of the Rook and Pawn endings are believed to end in draws, it would not surprise anyone to know how easily anyone makes a mistake in these of endgames despite knowing the theory, in all levels of chess. 8th Sunway Sitges Open R4: Sethuraman in a three-way lead 4.0/4

Sethuraman beat compatriot Harsha Bharathakoti to emerge as one of the three leaders at the conclusion of the fourth round of 8th Sunway Sitges Open 2021 Group A. The other two co-leaders are Denis Kadric (BIH) and Cristhian Rios Camilo (COL). IM Soumya Swaminathan continues her good form as she put her opponent GM Nihal Sarin in quite a bit of a pickle. However, Nihal managed to escape with a draw. Among the Indian players, GM Abhimanyu Puranik, GM Sankalp Gupta, GM Neelotpal Das and IM Soumya Swaminathan are at 3.5/4 each. Fedoseev wins double at 27th Abu Dhabi Masters, Raunak third in Blitz

Third seed in Rapid and top seed in Blitz, Vladimir Fedoseev won both Rapid and Blitz event at 27th Abu Dhabi International Chess Festival Masters. The Russian started both events with a loss - Alan Pichot in Rapid and Raunak Sadhwani in Blitz. However, he managed to recover well, score 7.0/9 in Rapid and 6.5/9 in Blitz to win US$ 5000 and 1500 respectively as his prize. Raunak scored 5.0/9 in Rapid to secure ninth place. IM Soumya Swaminathan became the only woman to be in the lead among 19 players as she beat GM Rodrigo Vasquez Schroeder (CHI) in the third round of 8th Sunway Sitges Open 2021 Group A. She will face Nihal Sarin in the fourth round. Apart from Soumya, only four more Indian players are at 3.0/3 They are - Sethuraman, Abhimanyu Puranik, Harsha Bharathakoti and Sankalp Gupta. Murleidhor Jalan Foundation sponsors Rs.7,50,000 for two young talents from North-East India

Historically, players from North East India have not been able to unleash their full potential in chess because of the lack of opportunities. Less tournaments being held, financial difficulties have made many talents lose out on creating a career in chess. Shahil Dey, born in 2007, has an Elo of 2400. Mayank Chakraborty, born in 2009, has an Elo of 2164. Both of these youngsters are the strongest young talents of North East India chess. Jalan industries, which has massive tea plantations in North East India, run a foundation by the name of Murleidhor Jalan Foundation. They have decided to invest Rs.7,50,000 in these youngster - Rs.5 lakh to Shahil and Rs.2.5 lakh to Mayank to make sure that they fulfill their potential.

8th Sunway Sitges Open R2: Mary and Soumya stun Cornette and Fier

WGM Mary Ann Gomes and IM Soumya Swaminathan score fantastic wins against GM Matthieu Cornette (FRA) and GM Alexandr Fier (BRA) respectively in the second round of 8th Sunway Sitges Open 2021 Group A. IM Moksh Amit Doshi and FM Manu David Suthandram R held GM Nihal Sarin and GM Dmitrij Kollars (GER) to a draw each respectively. IM Harikrishnan A Ra wins Sivakasi Chess Club Rapid Rating Open

IM Harikrishnan A Ra of Airport Authority of India, scored an unbeaten 8.0/9 to win Sivakasi Chess Club & Sri Kaliswari College Rapid Rating Open. Three more players - CM Lakshmi Narayanan M V, Subramanian R M and P Rajasekaran also finished with the same score. They were placed second to fourth according to the tie-breaks. Harikrishnan won a trophy and ₹10000 cash, Lakshmi received a trophy and ₹7000 and Subramanian got ₹6000 as their prizes. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹50000. Entry fee was only ₹250. 8th Sunway Sitges Open R1: Priyanka Nutakki and Sharan Rao score big upsets

WIM Priyanka Nutakki and Sharan Rao were the only two Indian players to beat GMs Iniyan P and Arjun Kalyan respectively in the first round of 8th Sunway Sitges Open 2021 Group A. FM Alessio De Santis (ITA) also stunned GM Susanto Megaranto (INA) after the latter made tactical error, much like how Priyanka got the better of Iniyan. Nihal, Karthikeyan Murali, Arjun Erigaisi, Sethuraman, Abhimanyu Puranik, Vaishali, Mary, Soumya, Padmini and Nandhidhaa made a winning start among the top Indian men and women in the field.
