SRM Chennai and Adamas clinch All India Inter University Men and Women Chess Tournament 2022

Adamas University made a stellar debut by securing two podium finishes at All India Inter University Chess Tournament 2022. The fourth seeded Adamas Women's team won the tournament with an unbeaten 9.0/10. SRM University also finished with the same score, however they were placed second according to tie-breaks. University of Madras, Chennai secured third place 8.0/10. The top three seeds in the Men's event finished in the same order. SRM IST, Chennai won the tournament 9.0/10. Adamas University was placed second 8.0/10. Anna University Chennai edged past Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune to finish third 7.0/10. Madhvendra Pratap Sharma (MP), Mayukh Majumder (WB), Parambrata Sarkar (WB) and Yug Tarun Khiani (KAR) emerged as the four leaders at MPL 34th National Under-10 Open Chess Championship 2022. All four of them showed consistency in their play and scored convincing victories against their opponents. In Round 5, Parambrata will face Madhvendra and Yug Tarun will battle against Mayukh. In the Girls event, National Under-9 Girls 2019 champion Siddhi Rao (KAR) and Maitreyi Mondal (WB) are the coleaders at 4.0/4. Oslo Esports Cup R6: Duda denies Praggnanandhaa

Jan-Krzysztof Duda denied Praggnanandhaa any advantage heading into the final round of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Oslo Esports Cup. FIDE World Cup 2021 winner won the first two games and drew the third one, although he was completely winning as a draw was enough for him to win the match. Meanwhile, Magnus Carlsen beat Eric Hansen in minimum number of games. This win allowed him to get back at the top of the points table. Pragg will need to win the final round match against Giri and hope Mamedyarov can beat the world champion, only then Pragg can win the tournament. It starts tonight at 9:30 p.m. IST. Remembering the chess historian Vijay Pandit (1945-2021)

On 27th April 2021, chess historian Vijay Pandit succumbed to the Covid-19 virus. Apart from writing numerous articles on chess history, he had authored quite a few books. Among them, he co-authored Indian Chess History 570-2010 AD with India's first International Master, Manuel Aaron. Vijay Pandit's contribution to our knowledge of Indian chess history has been immense. One cannot take a proper step forward without learning about the correct historical facts. MPL 34th National U-10 R1-2: Jyotika Sahoo stuns top seed Alankrita Sharma

Unrated Jyotika Sahoo (ODI) scored the biggest upset in Round 2 of MPL 34th National Under-10 Girls Chess Championship 2022. The Odisha girl got a better position out of the opening against the top seed, Alankrita Sharma (J&K, 1451). The local girl eventually made a tactical blunder which allowed Jyotika to win the game. In the Open event, top seed Abhinav Benny (KER, 1683) survived a scare against Anagani Sasank (AP). The Kerala boy escaped with a draw when his opponent was unable to figure out a win as it was not an easy one for someone who is less than ten years old. Round 3 starts today at 9:00 a.m. IST. Praggnanandhaa got back to his winning ways as he beat Eric Hansen in minimum number of games, just like his previous three wins. The wunderkind is back in the sole lead at Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Oslo Esports Cup. He started the day with a victory against the popular streamer. The second game ended in a draw after the Canadian could not find a way to capitalize on his advantage. Pragg won the third game to win the match and get back to the top of the points table. Magnus Carlsen was befuddled about how he blundered a rook in the second game. He eventually lost the match against Jorden van Foreest. Soham Kamotra and Bhagyashree Patil win MPL 31st National Under-18 Open and Girls Chess Championships

CM Soham Kamotra (J&K) and WFM Bhagyashree Patil (MAH) emerged as the winners of MPL 31st National Under-18 Open and Girls Chess Championships 2022. Soham became the first player from Jammu and Kashmir to win a National championship. He scored an unbeaten 9.5/11 and finished a half point ahead of the competition. IM Srihari L R (TN) scored sole 9.0/11 to secure second place. He also remained undefeated. Ilamparthi A R (TN) and Dinesh Kumar Jaganathan (TN) scored 8.5/11 each. They were placed third and fourth according to tie-breaks. Bhagyashree dominated the Girls event. She won the tournament with a round to spare. Her final score is 10.0/11. Oslo Esports Cup R4: Carlsen crushes Praggnanandhaa, joins the lead

Magnus Carlsen brought an end to Praggnanandhaa's winning streak in the fourth round of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Oslo Esports Cup. Pragg played well in the first game. However, he was unable to maintain accuracy when the time got low. In the second and third game, the 16-year-old made some simple mistakes which cost him the game. It goes without saying that it is certainly okay to lose against the world champion, many stalwarts have fallen in the battlefield against him on multiple occasions. The teenager is just getting started. This win allowed Carlsen to join Pragg in the lead with 9.0/12 and $22500 earnings. Pragg will face the popular streamer Eric Hansen in Round 5. GM D Gukesh scored the lone victory among the leaders in the final round over GM Adhiban B. For the second consecutive tournament, the youngest GM of India, became a clear champion 6.0/7 at 1st Menorca Open. He also gained 13.4 Elo rating points, taking his live rating to 2659.9 and becoming World no.80. Seven players scored 5.5/7. GM Aryan Chopra secured second position for the second event in-a-row. GM Shant Sargsyan (ARM) was placed third according to tie-breaks. Total prize fund of the tournament was €8000. Top three prizes were €1600, €1200 and €800 along with a trophy each. Oslo Esports Cup R3: Fiery Praggnanandhaa bests Liem, scores a hat-trick

Praggnanandhaa es en fuego which means Praggnanandhaa is on fire. He beat World Blitz 2013 champion Liem Le Quang in a similar fashion as he beat Jorden van Foreest and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov in the first two rounds of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Oslo Esports Cup. Liem was just coming off of a victory against Carlsen in Round 2. Pragg drew the first game, won the second one by taking the attack to his opponent. A time scramble caused both players to err in the third game. In the end, it was Liem who made the final mistake which caused Pragg to win the game and match. 15-year-old Kheerthi Ganta becomes the first girl to win Telangana State Rapid and Blitz 2022

15-year-old Kheerthi Ganta created history on 15th April when she became the first female player to win Telangana State Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships 2022. Kheerthi scored an unbeaten 6.0/7 and 7.5/8 to win the Rapid and Blitz titles respectively. In the Rapid, she edged past Tata Keerthi Rana, Md Bashiq Imrose, top seed of the tournament FM Rishpal Singh S, Sriram R and Rithvik R. They were placed second to sixth. However, she was a clear champion in the Blitz event by finishing a half point ahead of the competition. CM Amithpal Singh 7.0/8 and Bashiq 6.5/8 secured second and third place. Kheerthi joins the rare list of women like Sonakshi Rathore and Rutuja Bakshi to win a State Open title in India.

He beat Mamedyarov in his own style, by taking the attack to his opponent in Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Oslo Esports Cup. This win ensured Praggnanandhaa is in the sole lead with 6 points and $15000 earnings. Carlsen lost to Liem Quang Le. After a loss in the first game due to mouse slip, the world champion drew the second game, won the third one. However, he lost the fourth game and the match. Chess Super League reinvigorates Tarini Goyal, becomes the latest WIM of India

Tarini Goyal scored her final WIM-norm at Vezerkepzo IM March 2022 in Budapest, Hungary. She crossed 2200 in the live ratings at Vezerkepzo 7days 2022 to become India's latest Woman International Master. The skill and talent was always there in Tarini. However, board exams and the Covid-19 pandemic delayed the inevitable. Chess Super League happened in October 2021. It became a turning point for the Chandigarh girl, now representing Haryana. She scored her final WIM-norm and crossed 2200 in the live ratings in consecutive tournaments at Budapest, Hungary. Praggnanandhaa took the minimum number of games to beat Jorden van Foreest. Magnus Carlsen also did the same against Jan-Krzysztof Duda in the first round of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Oslo Esports Cup. Anish Giri and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov were the remaining two victors of the round. They won against Eric Hansen and Liem Quang Le respectively. Jorden had his fair share of opportunities in both games where he lost against Pragg, yet the Tata Steel Chess 2021 winner was unable to capitalize on them. 15-year-old Gukesh becomes the youngest Indian ever to break into World Top 100

GM D Gukesh beat GM Nino Batsiashvili (GEO) in the third round of 1st Menorca Open 2022. His live rating is now 2651.4. Thus, it makes him the seventh Indian to be in the World Top 100 rankings in live ratings. According to chessmetrics.com, Vishy Anand first broke into the World Top 100 at the age of 17 years in September 1987. Gukesh became the youngest Indian to break into World Top 100 in the live ratings at the age of 15 years. Ten players are in the lead 3.0/3 including six Indians.
