Mamedyarov scored his first victory of Superbet Chess Classic 2021 in Round 5 against Lupulescu. The Romanian did not anticipate the world no.8's onslaught correctly which caused his kingside to be completely broken and eventually cost the game. So and Grischuk made solid draws with Deac and Radjabov respectively. Aronian made his fifth consecutive draw, in another well contested game with Vachier-Lagrave. Today is a rest day. The second event of Julius Baer Challengers Chess Tour - Gelfand Challenge starts today with the same lineup of 20 players as the previous event. Ten under-18 male and ten under-24 female players are taking part. Apart from the four Indian talents - Nihal Sarin, R Praggnanandhaa, Gukesh D and Leon Luke Mendonca fighting for the top spot, two more Indian players - IM Aditya Mittal and WGM Vaishali R got added as a Reserve player for Team Polgar and Team Kramnik respectively. Total prize fund for the event is US$100,000. Not only that, the participants get to learn from Ju Wenjun, Surya Ganguly and Arthur Kogan, mentored by Judit Polgar. Superbet Classic R4: So and Grischuk score wins to share the lead 2.5/4

Wesley So and Alexander Grischuk scored their first victory of Superbet Chess Classic 2021 in Round 4. They won against the previous round leaders Caruana and Deac respectively to claim their own shared lead at 2.5/4. While So showcased his better understanding of the position and pieces, Grischuk grinded a relatively equal endgame by applying correct technique and eventually forcing the 19-year-old to succumb to his masterful play. The Romania no.2 will face So and Grischuk will face Radjabov in the next round. Humpy, Harika and Vaishali will feature in Women's Speed Chess Championship 2021

Humpy will be joined by Harika and Vaishali in the Main Event of Women's Speed Chess Championship which will start from this Thursday 10th June. Humpy is already seeded in the Main Event along with Hou Yifan, Kateryna Lagno, Anna Muzychuk, Lei Tingjie, Alexandra Kosteniuk, Antoaneta Stefanova and Irina Krush. These eight players will be seeded according to May 2021 FIDE Blitz rating list. The remaining eight will be the winner of each Qualifier. Harika won the Qualifier #1 and Vaishali won the Qualifier #2. The Knockout Stage of the Round of 16 will begin tomorrow and go on till 20th June, one match taking place everyday. Photo: chess.com

There is nothing to be afraid of the Romanians unless you are facing them in a chess tournament. Both Romania no.1 and 2 have been absolutely on fire in Superbet Chess Classic 2021. Lupulescu made a fantastic comeback after losing to Caruana in Round 2 as he beat Giri in Round 3 by capitalizing on his opponent's blunder. The Romania no.1 scored the sole victory of the round. 19-year-old Romanian sensation Bogdan-Daniel Deac made a solid draw with Mamedyarov. He is yet to show a chink in his armor in this event. 19-year-old Romania no.2 GM Bogdan-Daniel Deac continues his impressive run at the Superbet Chess Classic 2021 as he beat Vachier-Lagrave in Round 2. The Frenchman tried to launch an attack on the kingside which at a first glance seems outrageous but it was actually a good idea, Deac did not get rattled and handled it very well and grabbed a few pawns which eventually turned out to be the deciding factor in his victory. Sitges will host the FIDE World Women’s Team Championship

The year 2021 is getting stacked with official tournaments. We had Candidates in April, we will have World Cup between 10th July and 3rd August, World Championship is also slated to take place in November. A few days ago FIDE announced that World Women's Team Championship will take place in Sitges, Spain from 26th September to 3rd October 2021. The 2021 season Grand Chess Tour is off to a good start. The first round of the Superbet Chess Classic 2021 had five draws. When most of the players were playing safe and solid, Giri tried to create some imbalances which suddenly turned things into Romania no.2 and last minute replacement of Rapport, 19-year-old Bogdan-Daniel Deac's favor. However the youngster was unable to capitalize on his opportunity and convert it into a win. Giri managed to salvage a draw. Thus all ten players now have a half-point at the end of Round 1. FIDE extends the registration date of the Queens’ Festival

The Global Women’s Online Chess Challenge “The Queens’ Festival”, a series of continental and global women’s online chess tournaments and educative side events, starts on June 11, 2021. Female players from Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas will first be able to participate in the Continental Online Blitz Qualification Tournaments and those who qualify will advance to the Queens’ Online Individual and Team Finals. Organized by FIDE Commission for Women’s Chess in cooperation with FIDE Events Commission and with the support of the International Olympic Committee, the festival welcomes all women chess players from around the world of all ages and all rating groups, including unrated chess fans. Humpy qualifies to the FIDE Women's Candidates 2022

Koneru Humpy qualified to the FIDE Women's Candidates 2022 as she secured second place overall with 293 points in FIDE Women's Grand Prix 2019-21. Humpy was unable to take part in the Gibraltar GP due to the travel restrictions owing to Covid-19 pandemic. Her next major over-the-board event is FIDE Women's World Cup in July this year. We all hope that things improve by then so that she can travel and take part in it. Kateryna Lagno finished overall third (280 points) in the entire GP. Abhimanyu Mishra reaches 2496 Elo, needs one more GM norm

Abhimanyu Mishra reached Europe around mid April. From 14th of April to 31st of May, the boy has played 5 tournaments back to back! That's a total of 45 games in 47 days. Starting with an Elo of 2408, he has pumped it up to 2496. In the process he also scored his two GM norms! The Corona virus scare is real, the pressure of Karjakin's youngest GM in the history of chess record is on his shoulders, yet nothing comes in between Abhimanyu and his will to play good chess. He won the Vezerkepzo-2 GM May event on tiebreaks. We give you an overview of the tournaments he has played in the last month and a half and the boy has sent us an annotated game that involves a smooth positional victory against a GM.

Abdumalik wins FIDE Gibraltar GP 8.0/10 with a round to spare

Zhansaya Abdumalik drew her penultimate round game against Kateryna Lagno to secure her triumph in FIDE Gibraltar Women's GP. She now has an unassailable lead of 1.5 points at 8.0/10. Mariya Muzychuk is the closest contender who is at sole second place 6.5/10 after beating Gunina in Round 10. Mariya needs to win the final round to keep her chances of qualifying to the Women's Candidates. It will also depend upon how other players fare as the final standings will give a clear idea whether Humpy will qualify to the Women's Candidates via the Women's Grand Prix.
