P. Iniyan's road from Erode to Sochi

P. Iniyan, born in 2002, is just 18 years old. But the youngster from Erode is already taking massive steps in consolidating himself as one of the top grandmasters in the country. At the recently concluded AICF World Cup qualifier, the youngster scored 12.5/16 and won the tournament. Iniyan will now represent the country at the World Cup to be held in Sochi in July 2021. How did Iniyan achieve this strength as a chess player in spite of his home-town having no chess culture, how did he build a strong team around himself and how is he pushing himself all the time even in the Covid-19 pandemic. Carlsen finally beats So in the Finals to win FTX Crypto Cup

Magnus Carlsen broke his jinx and beat Wesley So in his third attempt to win the finals in a Meltwater Champions Chess Tour event. It was a huge relief for him to win the FTX Crypto Cup as he mentioned in the post-match interview. So stretched Carlsen to his limit as for the first time in this season these two played not only Blitz tie-breaks but also Armageddon to decide the winner of the event. It was a battle that everyone enjoyed including Carlsen whose celebration after each victory and especially the final one will be one for the ages. Unstoppable Abdumalik becomes Kazakhstan's first woman to earn a Grandmaster title

Zhansaya Abdumalik became Kazakhstan's first woman to earn a Grandmaster title by defeating Gunina in Round 9 of FIDE Gibraltar Women's Grand Prix. She has extended her lead by two points 7.5/9 and she is the only undefeated player of the tournament so far. Three players are at 5.5/9 and they are - Mariya Muzychuk, Kateryna Lagno and Gunay Mammadzada. Mariya suffered her first defeat of the event against Kashlinskaya. FTX Crypto Cup Finals Day 1: Carlsen-So put up a good fight while Radjabov draws the ire

Magnus Carlsen despite feeling unwell managed to beat Wesley So in the first game of the first set of Finals in Meltwater Champions Chess Tour FTX Crypto Cup. They drew the next game and then So leveled the score by beating Carlsen, before they drew again to tie the first set 2-2. However Radjabov drew the ire of the chess universe after making four consecutive short draws and then making a cryptic tweet that most of his colleagues got the point and implied that amateurs did not. It would be interesting to know what the point was. Will So beat Carlsen for the third time in this season or will Carlsen win his second straight tournament of the year. Second set of Finals start tonight from 8:30 p.m. IST.

Gibraltar GP R8: Mammadzada beats Lagno

Zhansaya Abdumalik has no intentions of slowing down as she beat Kashlinskaya in Round 8 of FIDE Gibraltar Women's GP to extend her sole lead by a full point 6.5/8. Both Mariya Muzychuk and Gunay Mammadzada are at shared second place with 5.5/8. Mariya drew with Dzagnidze, while Mammadzada beat Lagno convincingly ending her unbeaten run in the tournament. Paehtz drew with Anna Muzychuk to move to shared fourth place with Lagno 4.5/8. Iniyan wins AICF World Cup Qualifier and qualifies to the FIDE World Cup 2021

GM Iniyan P started AICF World Cup Qualifier with a draw against GM Sethuraman and that was his sole draw of the event. His aim was to play well and not to lose games and that is exactly what he did. He scored 12 wins and suffered only 3 losses. The most important win of the tournament turned out to be against Gukesh as he had all the momentum with him to cross the finish line. Iniyan will play the biggest FIDE World Cup in history which will have the highest number of participants 206, starting on 10th July 2021.

In the era of online tournaments since last year, apart from Nakamura, Carlsen's only other nemesis has been Wesley So. He has already beaten Carlsen twice in two different Meltwater Champions Chess Tour finals - Skilling Open and Opera Euro Rapid. So is undefeated for 29 games he played in this event whereas Carlsen has lost six games in total against - Vachier-Lagrave, Aronian, Nakamura and Radjabov. Zhansaya Abdumalik seems to have made the most out of the rest day as she beat Nana Dzagnidze to regain the lead with 5.5/7 in FIDE Gibraltar Women's Grand Prix. Mariya Muzychuk drew with Stefanova after the latter escaped with a perpetual check in a difficult position to salvage a draw. Mariya is now at sole second position with 5.0/7. AICF World Cup Qualifier R12-14: Iniyan takes sole lead 10.5/14

GM Iniyan P ended the previous day's co-leader GM Gukesh D's unbeaten streak at the AICF World Cup Qualifier. Iniyan scored his most important victory of the event so far in Round 14 to take sole lead 10.5/14. He still has to overcome the challenge of the in-form IM Rithvik Raja R, IM P Saravana Krishnan and GM Deep Sengupta on the final day to earn a place in the upcoming FIDE World Cup 2021. Gukesh is just a half point behind the leader 10.0/14. He still has a very good chance to finish at the top. IM Raja Rithvik R, GM Sethuraman SP and GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly is at sole third, fourth and fifth place with 9.5/14, 9.0/14 and 8.0/14 respectively. It is true that Wesley So has made a lot of draws in the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour FTX Crypto Cup but they paid off so far. So won the last game of the first set and gained advantage over Nepomniachtchi. The new world championship challenger now must win the second set to keep his Final hopes alive. Carlsen beat Radjabov in the third game after making two draws and Radjabov leveled the score immediately by winning the fourth game. The youngest GM of India, Gukesh scored his second hat-trick of AICF World Cup Qualifier to maintain his lead at 8.5/11. He is joined by India's 61st GM Iniyan P who won four games in-a-row to share the lead with 8.5/11. Gukesh drew with Sethuraman and beat Adhiban today, Iniyan started the day with a blazing victory over Narayanan S L and continued his momentum for the next three games. During the online era of chess, Carlsen and Nakamura played some slobberknocker games. Meltwater Champions Chess Tour FTX Crypto Cup also got to witness a few. Nakamura crumbled under pressure in the blitz tie-breaks and lost to Carlsen. He will face Radjabov in the Semi-Finals who drew all four games with his good friend Giri. Nepomniachtchi and Caruana also had some very interesting games but unfortunately for the American he missed few opportunities and could not continue his momentum from the Prelims. FIDE Gibraltar Women's GP headed to the only rest day of the event as both Abdumalik and Mariya Muzychuk maintained their lead with 4.5/6 each respectively. A battle between the leaders did not yield a decisive result as both of them are at the top of their game and neither made any significant mistake. Lagno drew with Saduakassova to move to sole third place with 4.0/6. She is followed by Dzagnidze, Paehtz and Mammadzada who are at 3.0/6 each respectively. Seven rounds of AICF World Cup Qualifier have been played and there are four players at 5.0/7. They are Surya Sekhar Ganguly, Narayanan S L, Gukesh D and Sethuraman SP. Ten more rounds to go and time control is of Rapid, 15 mins + 10 seconds which means the tournament is open for anyone to win. GM Iniyan P and IM Raja Rithvik R are at 4.5/7 each, followed by GM Deep Sengupta at 4.0/7. Among the top players, Adhiban is struggling a bit as he has scored only 3.5/7.
