Mounika Akshaya becomes the latest Woman International Master of India

Mounika Akshaya scored her final WIM-norm with two rounds to spare at 33rd Roquetas Chess Festival International Open 2022 in Almeria, Spain. She scored 5.0/9, performed at 2244 to become India's latest Woman International master. She scored her first WIM-norm at 17th Delhi International Open in January 2019. Laxman R R wins 1st Vellore Rapid Rating Open 2021

Top seed of the tournament, GM Laxman R R of Integral Coach Factory, scored an unbeaten 8.0/9 along with IM Srihari L R at 1st Vellore Rapid Rating Open. Laxman won the tournament due to better tie-break score, Srihari secured second position. Five players - WIM Michelle Catherina, IM Praveen Kumar, CM Daakshin Arun, Sachin Sangamesh R and Dhanasekar M scored 7.5/9 each, They were placed third to seventh according to tie-breaks. The tournament had the total prize fund of ₹100000 with the first prize being ₹15000 cash and a trophy. Lalit Rohit victorious at Vergani Cup January 2022

GM Lalit Rohit started the year 2022 in the exact same way as he ended 2021, by winning Vergani Cup January 2022. He played solid throughout the event, only in the last round, he underestimated IM Nurgyul Salimova (BUL) who had a phenomenal event. Somehow he made a lucky escape and won the tournament on tie-breaks as GM Hans Niemann (USA), GM Vitaliy Bernadskiy (UKR) and Nurgyul, all four finished with the same score 7.0/9. Lalit won €2500 (approx. ₹2.10 lacs) cash as his first prize, Hans and Bernadskiy got €1500 and €1200 each respectively. This is exactly what happened with our reviewer Aanjaneya Phatak. 20-year-old Aanjaneya, who works on chess without a coach, decided to go to the MP Masters Chess 2021. He lost 47 Elo point making his rating fall from 2212 to 2165. But from that experience he realized that he needed to add new openings to his arsenal. That's how he got his hands on Markus Ragger's latest Fritztrainer for ChessBase on the Grunfeld Defence. Lalit Rohit moves closer to win the Vergani Cup 2022

GM Lalit Rohit and IM Nurgyul Salimova (BUL) are the only two leaders 6.5/8 heading into the final round of Vergani Cup January 2022. They will face each other in the ninth round. While Lalit scored a clinical victory against M Amin Tabatabaei (IRI), Nurgyul defeated the legend, Nigel Short. The Bulgaria no.2 is in top form as she scored four consecutive victories, including two against GMs in the last two games. Lalit must win the final round to clinch the championship as a draw means, his fate might get decided by other players' results. The most exciting and talked about game of the FIDE World Championship 2021 was Game 6. Statistically, the sixth game of a World Championship match has yielded more decisive results than any other game. This one proved to be no exception, as records kept tumbling. The game had various layers of action and consequences borne due to the new time control introduced in this match. Rathanvel VS clinches R Hanumantha Memorial Cup All India Open Rapid and Blitz Rating 2021

MPL scholar IM Rathanvel VS won both Rapid and Blitz Rating event at R Hanumantha memorial Cup All India Open. He scored 8.0/9 in the Rapid event, edged past IM P Saravana Krishnan and FM Aradhya Garg on tie-breaks, both finished with the same score. They were placed second and third respectively. Rathanvel's only loss in the Rapid event was against Saravana. In the Blitz event, Rathanvel made a dominating start 8.0/8. A last round draw was enough for him to win the tournament as he had a full point lead heading into the last round and that's what he did. IM Pranav V, Abhishek Das and IM Ratnakaran K scored 8.0/9. Prakhar Bajaj and Cera Dagaria score 100% to win Madhya Pradesh State Sub-Junior 2021 Boys and Girls

Prakhar Bajaj (Katni) and Cera Dagaria (Indore) scored 100% in the Boys and Girls section to become Madhya Pradesh State Sub-Junior Boys and Girls champion. They scored 7.0/7 and 6.0/6 each respectively. Ayush Sharma (Khandwa), scored an unbeaten 4.5/5 to win the Madhya Pradesh State Junior title. Navya Goyal, Madhvendra Pratap Sharma and Kavyansh Agrawal scored 6.0/7 each. They were placed second to fourth based on tie-breaks. Avika Panwar (Indore) and Siya Kushwah (Ujjain) secured second and third place in Sub-Junior Girls. Top four finishers of each group won ₹2000 and a trophy each. Vergani Cup 2022 R5: Prraneeth Vuppala beats Hans Niemann

Vitaliy Bernadskiy (UKR) has taken sole lead 4.5/5 at the conclusion of the fifth round of the Vergani Cup January 2022. Ten players including three Indians are in the chase at 4.0/5 each. They are - GM Lalit Rohit, IM Bharath Subramaniyam and CM Prraneeth Vuppala. 14-year-old Prraneeth is in terrific form as he drew the morning round on the fourth day against GM Arjun Kalyan and defeated GM Hans Niemann (USA) by punishing his minute mistake correctly in the fifth round. He will face the legend Nigel Short in Round 6. Both Soumya Swaminathan and Nandhidhaa drew against a Croatian GM each in the previous round. Round 6 starts today at 7:30 p.m. IST. Dinesh Kumar Sharma wins Smt. Aparna Dutta memorial All India Open 2021

IM Dinesh Kumar Sharma won his fifth event of the year as he scored an unbeaten 8.5/10 to win Smt. Aparna Dutta memorial All India Open 2021. Two more players - Praloy Sahoo and Alekhya Mukhopadhyay also scored 8.5/10. They were placed second and third respectively according to tie-breaks. Dinesh won ₹35000 cash, Praloy got ₹25000 and Alekhya ₹20000. All three of them won a trophy each. Total cash prize ₹251000 and 57 trophies were given as prizes. GM Arjun Kalyan and CM Prraneeth Vuppala are at a half point behind, 2.5/3 each. They will face each other in the next round. Untitled Ojas Kulkarni scored the biggest victory of the round as he defeated Romanian legendary and celebrated author GM Mihail Marin. A new year isn't always the harbinger of hope and goodwill as our society makes it out to be. Ask Malika Handa, the seven-time national deaf Chess Champion of India. For her 2022 has begun in much the same way how 2021 ended: in dejection and fresh disappointments. The Government of her state, Punjab, Malika alleges, has gone back on its word to provide her with a cash prize and a job. In her tweet yesterday, which has since then gone viral, she even mentions being "fooled" by Punjab's incumbent dispensation. Vergani Cup 2022 R2: Short saves a point as his opponent's phone goes off

We have already seen that Nigel Short can still go and have fantastic games against strong opponents. However, it would be naive to think he is 100% chess wise, as he just recovered from COVID less than two weeks ago. A slight misstep in the early part of the game gave his 14-year-old opponent, Lorenzo Candian, a decisive advantage. Adamas University wins East Zone Inter University Men and Women Championships 2021 on debut

Adamas University won both Men and Women section of East Zone Inter University championships on their debut. In the Men's section, four teams - Adamas, University of Calcutta, L N Mithila University, Darbhanga and Jadavpur University, finished with the same score 10.0/12. They were placed first to fourth on tie-breaks. All four teams advanced to the Nationals. The Women's section was dominated by Adamas scoring 100%, 12.0/12, followed by University of Calcutta 10.0/12, Shahid Nand Kumar Patel University 8.0/12 and Manipur University 7.0/12. They secured second to fourth place respectively and qualified for the National University championships which will take place once the remaining Zonal Inter-University championships conclude. Untitled Ojas Kulkarni had a great start at Vergani Cup January 2022. He drew with the former World Championship Challenger and English legend, GM Nigel Short in the first round. He played solid throughout the game and made sure he did not commit any significant mistake. Anton Korobov, Hans Niemann, M Amin Tabatabaei and Zdenko Kozul started their tournament with a win in Round 1. Total 124 players including 22 GMs, 16 IMs, 4 WGMs and 2 WIMs are participating from 31 countries across the world. 26 Indians are taking part in this event, second-highest contingent after the host nation Italy which has 27 players.
