Aravindh Chithambaram successfully retains his National Blitz Chess Championship

GM Aravindh Chithambaram (TN, 2561) successfully defended his National Blitz title. GM Mitrabha Guha (WB, 2468) was that much close to the finish line. He was a full point ahead 8.5/9, heading into the final two rounds. Two consecutive losses again the eventual runner-up GM Karthik Venkataraman (AP, 2362) and the winner Aravindh, cost him the championship. Even a draw in the final round would have also been enough for him to win the tournament. Vivaan Vishal Shah and Charvi are the MPL 34th National Under-10 Open and Girls Chess Champions

In a dramatic turn of events, both top two boards of the Open section ended in draw. Vivaan Vishal Shah (GUJ) and Madhvendra Pratap Sharma (MP) both ended up with 9.0/11. However, Vivaan won the MPL 34th National Under-10 Open Chess Championship 2022 due to better tie-breaks. Madhvendra was placed second. Four players scored 8.5/11. Aansh Nandan Nerurkar (MAH) was adjudged third on tie-breaks. In the Girls event, Charvi A (KAR) won her final round game to win MPL 34th National Under-10 Girls Chess Championship 2022 with a massive two points ahead of the field. Charvi clinches MPL 34th National Under-10 Girls Chess Championship 2022 with a round to spare

Karnataka's Charvi A won MPL 34th National Under-10 Girls Chess Championship 2022 with a round to go. She is now at an unbeaten 9.5/10. Her statemate Aadya Ranganath is the only one closest to her 8.0/10. However, she cannot catch up to her mathematically. In the Open section, Madhvendra Pratap Sharma (MP) extended his sole lead by a full point 8.5/9 heading into the final round. Second seed of the tournament, Vivaan Vishal Shah (GUJ) handed Madhvendra his first loss of the event and kept things exciting for the title fray. Both Vivaan and Madhvendra are now at 8.5/10, followed by Aansh Nandan Nerurkar (MAH), Shaashvat Gupta (MAH) and Krishay Jain (WB) at 8.0/10 each. Final Round 11 starts today at 8:30 a.m. IST. Aravindh Chithambaram becomes the MPL National Rapid Champion 2022

GM Aravindh Chithambaram (TN, 2572) successfully retained his National Rapid title. This is his second National Rapid triumph after 2019. He has only played three of them. So two triumphs out of three is certainly a fantastic endeavor for Aravindh. He has also qualified for the World Rapid 2022 which will take place later this year. Aravindh scored an unbeaten 8.0/9 and finished a half point ahead of the competition. GM Deepan Chakkravarthy (RSPB, 2474) and IM Raahul V S (TN, 2177) scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed second and third according to the tie-breaks. Total prize fund of the tournament was ₹400000, top three prizes were ₹75000, ₹60000 and ₹50000 each respectively. Nitin Senthilvel wins All India Blitz Rating Open 2022

IM Nitin S scored an unbeaten 11.0/13. He finished a half point ahead of the competition to win All India Blitz Rating Open 2022. Three players scored 10.5/13 - IM Ravi Teja S, Bharat Kumar Reddy Poluri and Ashwath S. They were placed second to fourth according to the tie-breaks. Nitin won ₹24000 cash, Runner-up Ravi got ₹19000 and Second Runner-up Bharat earned ₹15000 cash each as their prize. Total prize fund of the tournament was ₹200000. Karnataka's Charvi A won both of her games against her state-mates Siddhi Rao and Krupha S Ukkali in Round 7 and 8 respectively. She has now gained sole lead 7.5/8 at MPL 34th National Under-10 Girls Chess Championship 2022. Hanya Shah (GUJ) and Tanusri S (Tamil Nadu) are the only ones closest to her at 6.5/8 each. In the Open section, Madhvendra Pratap Sharma (MP) defeated Yug Tarun Khiani (KAR) in Round 7 and drew with Aansh Nandan Nerurkar (MAH) in Round 8. MPL 34th National U-10 R5-6: Madhvendra Pratap Sharma scores a double hat-trick, gains sole lead

Madhvendra Pratap Sharma (MP) bested two challenges from West Bengal - Parambrata Sarkar and Mayukh Majumder in Round 5 and 6 respectively. He scored convincing victories in both games to gain sole lead 6.0/6 at MPL 34th National Under-10 Open Chess Championship 2022. 157th seeded Yug Tarun Khiani (KAR) continues his impressive run. He is the only player at a half point behind the leader 5.5/6. Among the Girls, Maitreyi Mondal (WB) beat Siddhi Rao (KAR) to take sole lead 5.0/5. Magnus Carlsen was poised to win his third consecutive tournament of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour 2022 season. Shakhriyar Mamedyarov had something to say about it. He handed the world champion not only his third loss of the event, but the toughest one. The Azerbaijan no.1 only took the minimum number of games to beat the world no.1, something even Liem or Jorden could not do. Praggnanandhaa once again lost in minimum number games, against Giri. Thus, Pragg finished at fourth place, behind Carlsen. Liem beat Jorden in the tie-breaks to finish second. SRM Chennai and Adamas clinch All India Inter University Men and Women Chess Tournament 2022

Adamas University made a stellar debut by securing two podium finishes at All India Inter University Chess Tournament 2022. The fourth seeded Adamas Women's team won the tournament with an unbeaten 9.0/10. SRM University also finished with the same score, however they were placed second according to tie-breaks. University of Madras, Chennai secured third place 8.0/10. The top three seeds in the Men's event finished in the same order. SRM IST, Chennai won the tournament 9.0/10. Adamas University was placed second 8.0/10. Anna University Chennai edged past Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune to finish third 7.0/10. Madhvendra Pratap Sharma (MP), Mayukh Majumder (WB), Parambrata Sarkar (WB) and Yug Tarun Khiani (KAR) emerged as the four leaders at MPL 34th National Under-10 Open Chess Championship 2022. All four of them showed consistency in their play and scored convincing victories against their opponents. In Round 5, Parambrata will face Madhvendra and Yug Tarun will battle against Mayukh. Oslo Esports Cup R6: Duda denies Praggnanandhaa

Jan-Krzysztof Duda denied Praggnanandhaa any advantage heading into the final round of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Oslo Esports Cup. FIDE World Cup 2021 winner won the first two games and drew the third one, although he was completely winning as a draw was enough for him to win the match. Meanwhile, Magnus Carlsen beat Eric Hansen in minimum number of games. This win allowed him to get back at the top of the points table. Pragg will need to win the final round match against Giri and hope Mamedyarov can beat the world champion, only then Pragg can win the tournament. It starts tonight at 9:30 p.m. IST. Remembering the chess historian Vijay Pandit (1945-2021)

On 27th April 2021, chess historian Vijay Pandit succumbed to the Covid-19 virus. Apart from writing numerous articles on chess history, he had authored quite a few books. Among them, he co-authored Indian Chess History 570-2010 AD with India's first International Master, Manuel Aaron. Vijay Pandit's contribution to our knowledge of Indian chess history has been immense. One cannot take a proper step forward without learning about the correct historical facts. Aaron got to know about his friend's passing two months after he left the mortal world. A heartfelt eulogy written by Manuel Aaron that we publish on the 1st death anniversary of his dear friend. MPL 34th National U-10 R1-2: Jyotika Sahoo stuns top seed Alankrita Sharma

Unrated Jyotika Sahoo (ODI) scored the biggest upset in Round 2 of MPL 34th National Under-10 Girls Chess Championship 2022. The Odisha girl got a better position out of the opening against the top seed, Alankrita Sharma (J&K, 1451). The local girl eventually made a tactical blunder which allowed Jyotika to win the game. In the Open event, top seed Abhinav Benny (KER, 1683) survived a scare against Anagani Sasank (AP). The Kerala boy escaped with a draw when his opponent was unable to figure out a win as it was not an easy one for someone who is less than ten years old. Round 3 starts today at 9:00 a.m. IST.
