The Magnus magic continues!

If Magnus's win over Nepomniachtchi yesterday was a display of his sheer on board confidence and creativity, then today's victory over Ding Liren is a proof of his preparation and practice. The World Champion registered his second consecutive win with the black pieces today and continues to lead the Croatia Grand Chess Tour 2019 after eight rounds of the event. Round 8 saw three decisive games in total, Wesley So defeated Hikaru Nakamura to stay at Magnus's heels with 5.5/8, while Anish Giri beat Shakhriyar Mamedyarov to catch up with Karjakin, Anand, and MVL on the leaderboard. Vishy Anand had an edge with the white pieces against Fabiano Caruana but the game somehow fizzled out into a draw. Elsewhere, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and Levon Aronian also drew their respective games against Sergey Karjakin and Ian Nepomniachtchi. In this report we bring you photos, analyses, and more.

Visakh NR joint winner at the Alekhine Memorial 2019 in Voronezh

Fighting against some of the strongest Russian players on their home soil, India's 60th GM Visakh NR finished as the joint winner along with GM Boris Savchenko at the 23rd edition of the Alekhine Memorial in Voronezh. Visakh played some enterprising chess and took great risks to play for wins with both white and black pieces. Nepo falls for the Magnus bluff!

Magnus Carlsen has emerged as the sole leader of the ongoing Croatia Grand Chess Tour 2019 by beating Ian Nepomniachtchi in the seventh round of the event. In what was an unusually closed position, the World Champion found creative ways to test his opponent. Nepo finally gave away and fell for a cheap trap Magnus had set that brought in a lethal onslaught on his king. Elsewhere, Sergey Karjakin blundered away a sure victory against Wesley So by overlooking a winning tactic. Vishy Anand, Levon Aronian, and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov drew their respective games relatively quickly against Ding Liren, Hikaru Nakamura, and Maxime-Vachier Lagrave. Fabiano Caruana and Anish Giri played the longest game of the day as they battled out for 54 moves before splitting the points.

Mr. Commonwealth beats India's triple national champion

The Commonwealth Championships taking place in Delhi from the 30th of June to 7th of July is an important event in the world chess calendar. The tournament is even more exciting because we have the four-time Commonwealth winner Abhijeet Gupta taking part. And as expected he is the sole leader of the tournament with 4.0/4. He is being closely pursued by Saravana Krishna, Debashis Das and R.R. Laxman. We also have 14 age category events taking place. The morning rounds are of the age category players, while in the evenings we have the rounds of the open section. This allows the players to play in both open and age categories, which many youngsters are taking advantage of! Who knows we might have an under-16 or an under-18 Commonwealth champion, also becoming the open champion! Report after round 4. 

Vidit shows great fighting chess in first three rounds of Danzhou GM 2019

India no.3 Vidit Gujrathi is known for his solidity and his ability to lose very few games in a calendar year. This has served him well in the past and with it he was able to breach the 2700 Elo mark. But it seems like Vidit had stagnated in the 2700-2720 zone in the last couple of years. One of the main reasons was that he was often playing too safely. It's not that Vidit is a bad attacking player. Check out his queen sacrifices from Isle of Man 2018, or his win against Kramnik from Wijk Aan Zee - Vidit knows how to attack! Well, at the Hainan Danzhou Chess 2019, he has decided to attack right from the word go. In three rounds he has played three aggressive games and has 1.5/3. While chess in Goa has picked up a few notches in recent years, it has much scope for improvement. In Category A, Goa’s lone Grandmaster Anurag Mhamal (2497) and IM Leon Mendonca (2405), were the best performers with 6.5 points in the final count. Mhamal finished on 35th position with 6.5 points after his last round win against the very promising Ritviz Parab (2357) when the latter resigned in a lost rook endgame. On the other hand, Goa's IM Leon Mendonca secured a memorable draw in his final round against India's 61st GM P Iniyan (2525) also to tally 6.5 points and end respectably on 42nd in the standings. It was a tough few months on the chess circuit for Tanmay Srinath. His rating was stuck at 1300 for the last few years, and despite improvement he was unable to make a break through. All that began to change with one thing - reporting on top level events for ChessBase India! Tanmay Srinath has been reporting on top level events for ChessBase India since some months and he was able to use this knowledge, to gain 70 Elo points with a K-factor of 20 and finish in the top quarter despite starting in the lower half at the Goa GM 2019 B category! Here is Tanmay's story of how analyzing the games of the current chess elite helped him improve his playing strength, and how he learnt from his mistakes at Goa 2018 to make Goa 2019 all the more memorable!

The month of July is relatively relaxed with less major tournaments compared to the last few months. The very first day of July pawns off with a tournament in Georgia with over EUR 15K+ prize fund. Then Catalan Circuit continues with tournaments at Benasque and Barbera del Valles from 4th July. Ivanchuk, Maghsoodloo and Nihal will be seen in action at Leon from 4th-8th July. 1st Thailand Chess Festival starts from 7th July with a variety of tournaments. World Junior for Disabled, Paracin, Czech Tour, National Sub-Junior, National Women's Senior, Asian Cities Team, Riga GP, Tal Memorial Blitz, Xtracon Open, Biel Masters, Sant Marti, Sitges, Arad International, Paris Grand Chess Tour, Belt and Hunan Road and many more tournaments are scheduled for the month of July.

Armenians rule 2nd Goa GM Open 2019

Eight days and ten rounds of intensive chess in the standard format at the 2nd Goa International GM Chess Open at Taleigao which concluded on Tuesday saw both the Armenian Grandmasters in the fray take the first two positions. Talking of the great vibe he has with his Armenian GM compatriot, Ter-Sahakyan revealed that he spends a lot of time with Petrosyan on and off tours through chess. “We had a little (training) session together before coming to India.
