The FIDE Grand Swiss 2019 began with a disaster for the five-time World Champion Vishy Anand as he was outplayed by the Russian Grandmaster Evgeniy Najer in merely thirty moves. Vishy's loss was perhaps the most unexpected in a day which saw many small and big surprises. The best result for the Indian contingent was fetched by the 13-year-old Raunak Sadhwani who defeated his strong 2662 rated opponent, Sanan Sjugirov, in an enterprising manner. Adhiban showed some sparkling combinative play to demolish his English adversary Wu Li, while Vidit's technical finesse triumphed over fellow compatriot Sethuraman. In this detailed report we bring you photos, analyses, results, and more from the first day of action here in Isle of Man.

The erstwhile chess.com Isle of Man International has evolved to become the newest addition to the World Championship cycle 2019-2020. The FIDE chess.com Grand Swiss, as it is now being called, has officially been inaugurated yesterday (October 9th) at the Comis Hotel in Douglas, Isle of Man. 154 top class Grandmasters from 42 nations are all set to battle it out. A place in the eight-player Candidates tournament, to be held in March-April of next year, is at stake. Moreover, the prize fund for this eleven-round swiss event is a whopping $433,000 with the first place worth an eye-popping $70,000. The latter detail has attracted none other than the current World Champion Magnus Carlsen and World no.2 Fabiano Caruana to join the party. There are fifteen Indian players, led by the Madras Tiger Vishy Anand himself, who are competing in this event. On this page you can follow all the action live with timely commentary and updates.

World Youth 2019 Rd.8: In the battle of Indian GMs, Pragg beats Iniyan

The eighth round of the World Youth 2019 was a critical one. Some of the leaders are not letting go of their grip of the top spots, while in some sections, motivated players are coming up with back to back wins to stake their claim on the title. Abinandhan continued with yet another win. The 1830 rated youngsters now has a performance of 2598. Praggnanandhaa beat Iniyan to join Aryan Gholami in the lead in under-18 open section. Hans Niemann is unstoppable in the under-16 open. The American chalked up yet another victory. Shuvalova maintains her lead in girls under-18 while there is very little to choose between Nurgali and Garifullina who are both winning their games in girls under-16. Aradhya Garg dominates Nurtr DCA Open Rapid Rating

Third seeded Aradhya Garg of Delhi scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win Nurtr DCA Open Rapid Rating 2019. He finished a full point ahead of the pack of nine other players who finished at 7.5/9. Athul Krishna S and Harshit Pawar also scored 7.5/9 each and they were placed second and third respectively according to their tie-break scores. Total 374 players participated from all over the country including a player from Nepal and a ten-year-old kid from Turkey. The tournament was jointly organized by Delhi Chess Association and Nurtr. Giuseppe Lettieri wins Flims Open in a 'Dream Castle'

FM Giuseppe Lettieri of Italy scored 5.0/5 to win Flims Open. Giuseppe received 500 Swiss Francs. He finished a full point ahead of Brian James Alkire of USA to win the championship. Bernd Reinhardt of Germany scored 3.5/5 along with two other players. Due to a better tie-break score, he secured the second runner-up position. Total 20 players from four different countries Germany, Italy, Switzerland and USA, took part in this three-day five-round Swiss league tournament. Sharjah invites you to the 10th edition of International Cup for Women

Chess & Culture Club for Sharjah Women invites all women chess players to the 10th Sharjah International Cup for Women which will be held at Sharjah Chess Club from 3rd - 13th January 2020. The tournament is open to all women with a valid FIDE ID. Entry fee is only $30. First prize is $3000 and a trophy. Conditions is also offered for selected rating category players. Daily one round gives the players plenty of time to prepare for their next game, only 7th January has a double round. That's not all, on Friday 10th January 2020, there will be Fischer Random Chess. Russia came to the under-14 open section with two medal hopefuls Volodar Murzin (2433) and Andrey Tsvetkov (2382) . They both were beaten by the same Indian player - Abinandhan R. And guess Abinandhan's rating? Just 1830! The youngster from Tamil Nadu has played some amazing chess at the World Youth Championships 2019 to perform at an Elo of 2568 and already gain 211 Elo points! Manigandan wins 15th KCM Open

Ninth seeded S S Manigandan of Madurai, Tamil Nadu scored an unbeaten 8.0/9 to win 15th KCM Open. IM Al Muthaiah also scored 8.0/9, however due to a better tie-break score, Manigandan was declared the winner of the tournament and Muthaiah had to settle for the runner-up position. Senthil Maran scored 7.5/9 and secured the second runner-up position. Total 339 players from four different states and one union territory participated in the tournament across the nation. World Youth 2019 Round 6: Just 14 and already a professional - Aydin Suleymanli

There are many strong players all across the world who are strong at the age of 14. But how many of them have the courage to say in a public interview that they are professionals? Meet Aydin Suleymanli, the 14-year-old from Azerbaijan, who is the leader in the under-14 open section. He played an excellent endgame to grind out a win from a drawish position against Aditya Samant (2334) of India. In this report we get to know more about this youngster. The other sole leaders after round six in the event are Leya Garifullina (5.5/6) in the under-16 girls and Rudik Makarian (5.5/6) in the under-16 open. Likhit Chilukuri becomes the Akshayakalpa Karnataka State Chess Champion

Nine rounds of closely contested chess battles at the Akshayakalpa Karnataka State Championship came to a successful end on Sunday. Out of the hard-fought competition, it was 21-year-old Likhit Chilukuri who emerged as the clear champion with 8.5/9 points. Prachura P.P. and Parthasarathy R. followed him closely just half a point behind with 8.0/9 each, finishing second and third respectively. WIM Isha Sharma suffered a shock defeat in the penultimate round in the hands of Jagadish P and ended up finishing fourteenth. Thus, the event didn't turn out to be a memorable one for the top seed. Karnataka State Chess Championship Day 04 - An unrated player in dominating form!

The fourth day of Akshayakalpa Karnataka State Chess Championship also came to a conclusion. As the event is inching towards the end with only two more rounds to go, there are four players who are fighting it out for the top spot. Mr. Ajith Chandy Jose, who is lately representing the state of Karnataka, is an unrated player yet he is grabbing all the eyeballs for being one of the leaders with an incredible score of 6.5/7 points. The sixth round of the tournament was ruffled with an upsetting incident as a player's mobile phone began to ring out loud soon after the games were declared on. Karnataka State Chess Championship - halfway through and in full swing!

The Akshayakalpa Karnataka State Chess Championship is halfway through. The over-the-board battles are slowly getting longer and more intense. At the conclusion of day three seven players have emerged as joint leaders with perfect scores of 5.0/5 points each and they are being followed by as many as fourteen players who are just half a point behind with 4.5/5. Thanks to various initiatives of Akshayakalpa, the tournament has established itself as a zero-plastic sporting event. The authorities have effectively managed to avoid the use of even a single plastic or paper cup. Consequently, the food is being served on steel ware and players are being provided with steel bottles. Hinduja Reddy, our author who is present at the venue, sends an illustrated report.
