Baku Open 2023 R4: Leon joins the six-pack lead

GM Leon Luke Mendonca defeated GM Ulvi Sadikhov (AZE) to join the leaders after Round 4 of Baku Open 2023. Leon gained a significant positional advantage by move 20. A few inaccuracies allowed the teenager to create a passed pawn on the b-file using tactics. It played a crucial role in earning him the full point. IM Prraneeth Vuppala drew with GM Misratdin Iskandaraov (AZE). A total of 20 players are trailing the leaders by a half point at 3/4 each. Six Indians are there among them. Arjun Erigaisi bounced back from his consecutive losses by defeating D Gukesh in the fourth round of 28th TePe Sigeman & Co Chess Tournament 2023. Arjun has never lost a Classical rated game against Gukesh. That fact did not change yesterday. After an inaccurate exchange in the center, Gukesh missed a tactical opportunity to fight back and try to salvage a half point. Arjun capitalized on his second chance and scored his second win of the event. The remaining three games of the round ended in draws. Superbet Classic 2023 R2: Rapport and Nepo score

Richard Rapport and Ian Nepomniachtchi scored the wins in the second round of Superbet Chess Classic 2023. Rapport had an opposite color bishop endgame against Jan-Krzysztof Duda. It should have ended in a draw with correct play. However, Duda blundered and his opponent seized the opportunity. Nepomniachtchi defeated the Romania no.2 and the lowest player in the fray, Bogdan-Daniel Deac. The former world championship challenger seized his opportunity when his opponent made a mistake in the endgame. Two out of three draws ended in 22 moves or less. The festival includes Classical and Blitz rating tournaments along with various side events for parents, coaches and accompanying persons. The total prize fund of the festival is LKR 1.4 Million. The top three prizes in the Classical event are LKR 150000 + trophy, 100000 and 70000 along with a medal each respectively. Last date of registration is 18th May. Superbet Classic 2023 R1: So subdues Firouzja

The first round of Superbet Chess Classic 2023 witnessed only one decisive game. The first official World Fischer Random champion, Wesley So defeated the current world no.4 Alireza Firouzja. He played his first rated game in almost eight months. The latter made some inaccuracy in the queen, rook and knight endgame and paid a heavy price for it. The new world champion, Ding Liren drew his first game comfortably after winning the crown against the former world blitz champion, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave. IM Aditya S Samant held Serbia no.2 GM Aleksandar Indjic to a short draw. 20 players including six Indians are at 2.5/3 each. Tepe Sigeman & Co 2023 R3: Svidler and Mishra join Gukesh in the lead

Sweden no.1 Nils Grandelius halted D Gukesh's winning streak at 28th TePe Sigeman & Co Chess Tournament 2023. Gukesh opted for the Berlin in Ruy Lopez. The three-time winner of this event made a Greek-gift sacrifice. However, it was not as venomous as he wanted it to be. A draw via perpetual check became the obvious result of it. Arjun Erigaisi suffered his second consecutive loss of the event. Svidler was repeating the same line he played against Caruana in a Blitz game. Arjun's exchange sacrifice did not earn him any compensation and eventually he lost. Jorden van Foreest got the better of Gelfand in the endgame. Deepan Chakkravarthy wins 1st Queenstar Rating Open 2023, Raahul V S third

GM Deepan Chakkravarthy, GM Azer Mirzoev (AZE), IM Raahul V S and CM Isara Banidu Dahanayake (SRI) scored an unbeaten 8/9 each. Deepan won the 1st Queenstar Rating Open 2023 due to better tie-breaks. The remaining three were placed second to fourth respectively. Deepan drew with both remaining podium finishers. The total prize fund was LKR 2.2 Million. The top three prizes were LKR 200000, 125000 and 75000 along with a trophy and medal each respectively. Deepan won ₹51080 approximately. World Under-14 Gold medalist, IM Ilamparthi A R scored a big victory over GM Bharath Subramaniyam H. He is now among the 14 players who are at 2/2. Six of them are Indians. The remaining five are - GM Leon Luke Mendonca, GM Harsha Bharathakoti, GM Aditya Mittal, GM Sandipan Chanda and IM Aditya S Samant. GM-elect IM Prraneeth Vuppala held Azerbaijan no.6 GM Nijat Abasov to a draw. He had a good opportunity to make things difficult. However, the teenager opted for a safer option. D Gukesh made a fantastic start at 28th TePe Sigeman & Co Chess Tournament 2023. He destroyed the Germany no.1 Vincent Keymer when the latter overlooked a bishop sacrifice. It wrecked the kingside and Gukesh had no trouble seizing his advantage. This win made Gukesh's live rating at his career highest 2741 and now he is World no.15. Meanwhile, Arjun Erigaisi dropped the ball on his position when he himself stopped the momentum by making a strange retreat. Later, a desperate rook sacrifice did not work and the Sweden no.1 Nils Grandelius had no trouble wrapping things up. Raahul V S wins 1st Queenstar Blitz Rating Open 2023

Both IM Raahul V S and FM Liyanage Ranindu Dilshan scored 8.5/9 at 1st Queenstar Blitz Rating Open 2023. Their penultimate round encounter against each other ended in a draw. The first three tie-break scores were exactly the same. Raahul won the tournament based on their fourth tie-break score, Liyanage was placed second. Sri Lanka no.1 IM L M S T De Silva edged past Shrayan Majumder on tie-breaks to secure third place. They both scored 8/9 each. The top three prizes were LKR 50000, 25000 and 15000 along with a trophy and medal each respectively. Raahul won ₹12770 approximately. This is Raahul's first tournament victory since December 2021 when he won Gold at Asian Junior Open in Sri Lanka.

IM Dushyant Sharma held Azerbaijan no.5, GM Rauf Mamedov to a draw in the first round of Baku Open 2023. Dushyant played solid throughout the game and ensured no mistakes were made. The majority of the game was a rook endgame which lasted for 56 moves out of 88 in total. FM Mohamed Anees M missed a great opportunity to win against GM Vitaliy Bernadskiy (UKR). The former initially found the correct way to liquidate into a favorable knight vs bishop endgame. However, he misplayed and let his opportunity slip. FM Nikhil Dixit scored a beautiful win against IM Manish Anto Cristiano F when the latter blundered immediately after declining a guaranteed draw by perpetual check. Arjun Erigaisi got the better of the legendary Boris Gelfand in the first round of 28th TePe Sigeman & Co Chess Tournament 2023. The FIDE World Cup 2009 winner and former World Championship Challenger blundered a piece in the middlegame. Gelfand opted for the Open Catalan, something Arjun is quite well-prepared. D Gukesh scored his first win against 2021 edition winner, Jorden van Foreest. The Netherlands no.2 erred in the queen and minor piece endgame, from which there was no possibility of saving the game.
