D Gukesh won his first round game against Richard Rapport (ROU) at 8th Vugar Gashimov Memorial 2022 Rapid. It was exciting batttle against the creative genius Rapport whose king was vulnerable when he made the final mistake.Then he lost his next two games against Rauf Mamedov (AZE) and Francisco Vallejo Pons (ESP). Rauf outplayed Gukesh positionally. In the game against the Spain no.1, Gukesh got a couple of opportunities to save the game in the rook endgame. However, he missed them all. Aronyak Ghosh wins Tata Steel Chess Festival 2022 Blitz Open

IM Aronyak Ghosh, Subhayan Kundu and FM Aditya Vikram paul scored 7.5/9 at the Tata Steel Chess Festival 2022 All India Blitz Open. They secured first, second and third place respectively according to tie-breaks. Only Aronyak remained undefeated among them. He also won his third consecutive Tata Steel Chess Festival event. Rapid Open and Rapid Rating in 2019 and 2021 respectively and now Blitz Open. A total of 155 players including 5 IMs and two WIMs took part in this nine-round tournament with a time control of 3 minutes + 2 seconds increment each. The total prize fund was ₹39000. GM D Gukesh will participate in his second consecutive super tournament of the year. After a shared third place finish at the Tata Steel Chess India 2022 Rapid, he had a forgettable Blitz event. He would certainly like to do better in his first tournament in Azerbaijan. The remaining nine players in the field are - Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (AZE), Richard Rapport (ROU), Aydin Suleymanli (AZE), Rauf Mamedov (AZE), Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB), Francisco Vallejo Pons (ESP), Abdulla Gadimbayli (AZE), Sam Shankland (USA) and Hao Wang (CHN). FIDE reforms the qualifications paths to the Candidates Tournament

The FIDE Council has made a major reform on 16th December 2022. It is towards the paths to the Candidates Tournament, the event that determines the Challenger for the World Championship match. The main innovation behind this is to create new qualifying paths through a variety of FIDE rated tournments. Grand Prix is abolished for now as a path which used to give spots for the Candidates tournament. Apart from GP, Wild Card system has been removed too. Aswath and Tejaswini win MPL National Sub Junior Open and Girls Chess Championships 2022 convincingly

Tamil Nadu's Aswath S and Tejaswini G scored an unbeaten 9.5/11 each to win MPL 47th National Sub-Junior Under-15 Open and 38th National Sub-Junior Girls Chess Championship 2022. Both of them finished a half point ahead of the field. Aswath drew with both remaining podium finishers - runner-up Arjun Adireddy (TEL) 9/11 and second runner-up FM Harsh Suresh (TN) 8.5/11. Tejaswini drew with the eventual runner-up WCM Kheerthi Ganta (TEL) 9/11 and defeated the second runner-up Shubhi Gupta (UP) 8.5/11. In both sections, the top two finishers did not require tie-breaks. Chessable Sunway Sitges Open R5: Alekseenko and Karthikeyan Murali share the lead

GM Kirill Alekseenko and GM Karthikeyan Murali are the coleaders after the fifth round of Chessable Sunway Sitges Open 2022 Group A. While Alekseenko defeated GM Abhimanyu Puranik, Karthikeyan halted IM Aditya S Samant's fantastic momentum. Abhimanyu had to find a difficult resource to save his kingside from crumbling. Aditya needed to use his knight more in the endgame before it became a liability. The tournament leaders will inevitably face each other in the sixth round. Velammal Nexus felicitates Gukesh

Velammal School in Chennai, a part of the Velammal Nexus group is a landmark in Indian chess history by all counts. The number of top-level Grandmasters who have come from the Chennai school is huge! One of their brightest students is Gukesh D, the 16-year-old phenomenon who won an Individual Gold medal in Board 1 at the Chennai Chess Olympiad 2022. The World's third-youngest Grandmaster recently became the youngest player to defeat the World Champion Magnus Carlsen! Gukesh was felicitated recently by the Velammal Nexus School, in the presence of 5-time World Champion and FIDE Deputy President, Viswanathan Anand.

India wins 43 medals at Asian Schools Chess Championships 2022

India has won a massive 43 medals including 20 individual (10 Gold, 6 Silver and 4 Bronze) medals, 23 team (8 Gold, 10 Silver and 5 Bronze) medals at Asian Schools Chess Championships 2022. Sharvaanica A S is the only Indian who has won a Gold medal in all three formats - Classical, Rapid and Blitz in Under-9 Girls category. She won Gold with a perfect score of 9/9, 7/7 and 7/7 respectively. Sidhant Rana won two Gold and a Silver medal, Vedika won a Gold and two Silver. Six players are at a 100% score after the fourth round of Chessable Sunway Sitges Open 2022 Group A. GM Abhimanyu Puranik, IM Aditya S Samant and GM Karthikeyan Murali are the three Indians among them. Aditya scored a fantastic victory over GM B Adhiban. He is currently the sole IM among the pack. The 16-yeara-old will face fellow countryman Karthikeyan in the fifth round. Five players scored 7/8 at the Tata Steel Chess Festival 2022 All India Rapid Rating Open. They are - IM Neelash Saha, Subhayan Kundu, IM Aronyak Ghosh, Kaustuv Kundu and Swapan Mitra. Neelash, Subhayan and Aronyak secured first, second and third place respectively according to tie-breaks. Top three remained undefeated. A total of 174 players including 3 IMs and two WIMs took part in this eight-round Rapid Rating tournament with a time control of 15 minutes + 10 seconds increment each. 19 players have made a perfect start of 3/3 at Chessable Sunway Sitges Open 2022 Group A. 17-year-old Kushal O is the sole untitled player is among them. He defeated FM Jana Schneider (GER, 2272), IM Thomas E Rendle (ENG, 2381) and IM Gerard Ayats Llobera (ESP, 2464). The Gran Hotel Bali Aficionados B winner, is already gaining 114 Elo rating points. His next round opponent GM Andrey Esipenko will be the first GM of the event he is going to face. Kushal dominates 19th Gran Hotel Bali Aficionados B, Aditya Varun Gampa second in Group A and Blitz

17-year-old Kushal O scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win 19th Gran Hotel Bali Aficionados B group. He finished a half point ahead of the field. Aditya Varun Gampa finished second in both Group A and Blitz Nocturno. He scored 7/9 and 7/8 in those two events respectively. CM Md. Imran won the Blitz event scoring 7/8. The top three prizes in the Aficionados B group were €3100, €1400 and €1200 each. For Group A the prizes were, €1300, €1100 and €1000 each. For Blitz, it was €90, €60 and €50. All podium winners won a trophy along with their respective cash prizes. This was Kushal's first overseas triumph of his career and first Blitz tournament victory of the year for Imran. Praggnanandhaa wins Julius Baer Challenger Championship

Praggnanandhaa started the day with a loss against Pranav Venkatesh in the third match. It took a game for Praggnanandhaa to adjust to the new time control as he mentioned in the post-match interview. He won the next two games convincingly to ensure he scores a minimum 2.5 points in three matches. Thus, he won the Julius Baer Challenger Championship. Pranav might have lost this match, however he still has the spot at the Champions Chess Tour 2023 which he earned by winning the Challengers Chess Championship 2022. Praggnanandhaa went on to do great things in the 2022 season including winning against Carlsen three times consecutively. Pranav would also like to level up and seize his opportunity. Photo: chess24
