17-year-old Divya Deshmukh is the 12th Indian female to become an International Master

The reigning two-time National Women's champion, WGM Divya Deshmukh scored her final IM-norm on Thursday 11th May at Baku Open 2023. Despite losing her eighth round game against IM Aditya S Samant, Divya's final norm was secured. Her last round result became immaterial. As the 44th Chess Olympiad 2022 individual Bronze medalist, mentioned in an interview, she scored her norms in two years of gap. The first norm was when she was 13-years-old at AICF-Velammal WGM Round Robin in February 2019. She crossed 2400 in April FIDE 2019 Rating list. A little over two and a half years later, she earned her second IM-norm at First Satuday GM October 2021. She will make her FIDE Women's World Cup debut in almost 2.5 months from now. Neelash Saha wins Late Bharatbai Halkude Memorial Chess Festival 7th Rating Open 2023

IM Neelash Saha, IM Kushagra Mohan, GM Saptarshi RoyChowdhury and IM Chakravarthi Reddy M - all four scored 8/9 each. Neelash won Late Bharatbai Halkude Memorial Chess Festival 7th Rating Open 2023 due to better tie-breaks. The remaining three were placed second to fourth. Neelash defeated Kushagra and drew against Saptarshi. Apart from Kushagra, the remaining three out of top four remained undefeated. The total prize fund of the tournament was a staggering ₹1400212. The top three prizes were ₹122222, ₹101111 and ₹55555 along with a huge and beautiful trophy each. 6th Sharjah Masters 2023 R1: A good start for the Indians

The top seeds have made a solid start at 6th Sharjah Masters 2023. The Masters event witnesses the participation of 78 GMs from 29 countries across the world. Players are rated 2519 and above, eight 2700+ players are taking part. The reigning Women's World Champion, Wenjun Ju is playing a rated tournament for the first time outside of China since March 2020. D Gukesh, Arjun Erigaisi, R Praggnanandhaa and Nihal Sarin made a winning start. Leon Luke Mendonca held Sanan Sjugirov to a draw from an extremely difficult and at one point, totally lost position. Cong Khon triumphs at Golden Week Rating Open 2023

Mayur Gondhalekar and his good friend, Sheldon Donaldson keeps us updated about the Japan chess scene. Sheldon writes a blog about his experience in the Golden Week Open 2023. It was a FIDE rated event. The Canadian origin, currently residing in Japan, Sheldon's takes on his games are a nice light read. He does not go too hard on himself for the losses, yet he makes us all enjoy various moments from his games. Aakash Sharadchandra Dalvi and FM Vedant Panesar scored 8.5/9 each at 1st Anjanibai Deshbhratar Rapid Rating Open 2023. Third seed of the event, Aakash won the tournament due to better tie-breaks and the top seed Vedant was placed second. Anirudhha Potawad and Harshal Patil scored 8/9 each. They were placed third and fourth respectively according to tie-breaks. Aakash and Vedant did not face each other. However, Aakash defeated the eventual second runner-up Anirudhha in the penultimate round. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹200000. Mayank Chakraborty and Mrittika Mallick are the MPL 33rd National Under-17 Open and Girls Chess Champions

CM Mayank Chakraborty (ASM) and Mrittika Mallick (WB) scored an unbeaten 10/11 and 9.5/11 each to win MPL 33rd National Under-17 Open and Girls Chess Championship 2022 respectively. Both of them finished a full point ahead of the competition. Ajay Santhosh Parvathareddy (UP) scored sole 9/11 to finish second. Vignesh Advaith Vemula (TEL) edged past Madhavan R Munjanattu (KER) on tie-breaks to finish third 8.5/11. Mayank defeated Ajay and drew against Vignesh. In the Girls event, Sarayu Velpula (TEL) and the reigning National Amateur Below-200 Women champion, scored 8.5/11. They were placed second and third respectively according to tie-breaks. Mrittika drew against both of them.

Fabiano Caruana wins Superbet Chess Classic 2023

Fabiano Caruana drew against Richard Rapport in the final round to win Superbet Chess Classic 2023. The remaining three - Alireza Firouzja (FRA), Wesley So (USA) and Anish Giri (NED) who could catch him, also drew their respective games. Thus, Caruana became a clear champion. He won 13 GCT points and US$ 100000. Giri's overpush against Ian Nepomniachtchi almost cost him the game. Nepo's tiredness made him miss his chance and Giri escaped with a half point. The new world champion, Ding Liren finished the tournament with a win over the Romania no.2 Bogdan-Daniel Deac. This was Ding's only win out of nine games. S Rohith Krishna clinches 19th Malakoff Open 2023

IM S Rohith Krishna scored 7.5/9 to win 19th Malakoff Open 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the field. Despite losing his second round game against FM Samuel Malka (FRA), Rohith bounced back strong and scored 6.5/7 in the next seven games to win the tournament. His sole draw of the event was against the eventual second runner-up, GM Momchil Nikolov (BUL). Six players scored 7/9. GM Radoslav Dimitrov (BUL) and Momchil were placed second and third according to tie-breaks. GM Koustav Chatterjee, Sanket Chakravarty and FM Sourath Biswas are three other Indians to finish among top ten. They scored 7/9, 7/9 and 6.5/9 to secure fourth, sixth and eight place respectively.

Sanskar Gaigore wins All India Below 1600 Rating Tournament 2023

12-year-old Sanskar Gaigore scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win All India Below 1600 Rating Tournament 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the field. Six players scored 7.5/9. Out of them Mradul Yadav and Nilay Kulkarni secured second and third place respectively according to tie-breaks. Sanskar drew with Mradul in the penultimate round and beat Nilay in the previous. The entire podium finishers are from Nagpur. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹400000. The top three prizes were ₹50000, ₹35000 and ₹21000 along with a trophy each respectively. Superbet Classic 2023 R8: Duda beats Firouzja, helps Caruana regain sole lead

Jan-Krzysztof Duda has achieved a lot of things. One thing he hadn't done yet was to beat Alireza Firouzja in a Classical rated game. That changed yesterday. The current world no.2 suffered his second loss of the event when he once again went wrong in the endgame. Time and again, the area which has proved to be Firouzja's recurring weakness in any format of the game is endgame. Once he improves that area, he can be the next World Cup winner as that is a little over two months away. This draw helped Fabiano Caruana emerge as the sole leader once again. The remaining three were placed second to fourth respectively. Utkal drew against the eventual runner-up Nilsu in the penultimate round. Both of them remained undefeated. The tournament was organized in memory of Arati Bijoy Mohanty. The total prize fund was ₹500000. The top three prizes were ₹50000, ₹30000 and ₹20000 along with a trophy each respectively. When someone sees Ding Liren and Ian Nepomniachtchi lose again at Superbet Chess Classic 2023, the first thing that should come to mind is fatigue. Playing the World Championship Match is bound to take a toll. It does not necessarily mean that Ding Liren is a beatable or a weaker world champion. Leon Luke Mendonca clinches Baku Open 2023 with a 2732 performance

GM Leon Luke Mendonca scored an emphatic victory over GM-elect IM Prraneeth Vuppala in the final round of Baku Open 2023. He finished with the same score 7/9 as GM Aleksandar Indjic (SRB) and GM Vladislav Kovalev. Leon won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Indjic and Kovalev were placed second and third. GM Sethuraman S P scored an unbeaten 6.5/9 to finish fourth. IM Prraneeth Vuppala and GM Aditya Mittal secured sixth and seventh place scoring 6/7 each. India's latest IM Divya Deshmukh secured third place in the Women's category scoring 5/9. This is Leon's third rating open triumph in less than 2.5 months and five podium finishes in his last six strong open events. His performance this year is the definition of impressive. Superbet Classic 2023 R6: Exciting draws and missed opportunities

For the first time in Superbet Chess Classic 2023, all five games ended in draws. However, there were plenty of exciting games. Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and Richard Rapport had n intriguing queen and minor piece endgame. Both sides were unable to push hard as that could have turned fatal. Wesley So had an opportunity to beat the new world champion Ding Liren. He could have sacrificed an exchange to gain the upper hand, before he exchanged his queen for rook and two bishops.
