MPL 11th National Schools Chess Championships 2023 - A Curtain Raiser

Why Tamil Nadu is the numero-uno in the Indian chess scene? One of the main reasons is its organizing strength and ability to conduct big level tournaments. Regular, frequent and systematic tournaments have helped to generate the players, quality as well as quantity wise. Academic institutions play a vital role in promoting chess by helping players as well as providing venue with excellent infrastructure and facilities. Adhiyaman College Engineering, Hosur and Dr. Mahalingam College of Engineering, Pollachi have come forward to hold the National Schools Chess Championships and the National Team Chess Championships within a gap of ten days. Tata Steel 2023 R10: Gukesh bests Praggnanandhaa, Carlsen makes a comeback

D Gukesh continues his great momentum at 85th Tata Steel Chess Masters 2023. He defeated Praggnanandhaa in an exciting game. Almost a year later, Gukesh avenged his last Classical loss against Pragg at Reykjavik Open 2022. The 16-year-old announced his intentions of playing for only one result with 10.Rg1, 11.g4. The dynamic play certainly upstaged his opponent who generally prefers to play solid chess. Magnus Carlsen defeated Parham Maghsoodloo to reduce the gap 6/10 with Nodirbek Abdusattorov 7/10. Anish Giri drew with Wesley So to remain at sole second place 6.5/10. AICFB National Juniors: Sam Peniel dominates, Tanish seizes the moment, John wins hearts

P Sam Peniel (1364, TN) won the National Junior Chess Championships for the Visually Challenged! Sam scored 6.5/7, and his only draw of the tournament was against John Harris Sujin.  Tanish Waghmare (MAH) took the 2nd position with 6/7, and John Harris Sujin came in 3rd with 5.5/7. Sam Peniel and Tanish Waghmare will now represent India in the forthcoming IBCA World Junior Chess Championship which will be held in Spain. Two players will also get an entry into National senior championships of the visually impaired. Read the final report of the AICFB National Junior Championships below.

Tata Steel 2023 R9: Gukesh aces the Magnus Carlsen test, Praggnanandhaa draws with Caruana

D Gukesh won the individual Gold medal at the 44th Chess Olympiad, ahead of Abdusattorov and Carlsen. The 16-year-old won it for a reason and the world no.1 did not forget about it. Wesley So reminded the world about the same after his seventh round win over him. Even though Gukesh's score was a meager 2.5/8 until the ninth round, he is always a force to be reckoned with. Carlsen tested the teenager in various ways, but the boy won't budge. The game ended in a draw and he got to analyze with the three-time world triple crown champion for 50 minutes. Gukesh just silenced the doubters who wondered how the boy will fare against the world no.1 in a classical game in his first super tournament. Harshit Singh wins VKV Rating Open 2023

16-year-old Harshit Singh and GM Himanshu Sharma scored a perfect 6/6 each. The teenager from Uttar Pradesh, Harshit won VKV Rating Open 2023 due to better tie-breaks, the top seed was placed second. Ten players scored 5/6 each. Out of them, Sunny Bedi secured the third place overall. Sahil Bheron was awarded third prize in the Open category. Total prize fund of the tournament was ₹200000. The top three prizes were ₹20000, ₹15000 and ₹10000 along with a trophy each. Generally we see a classical rating tournament to have anything between eight and eleven rounds. Tata Steel 2023 R8: A day of firsts

Even though the eighth round of Tata Steel Chess 2023 concluded, a lot of firsts happened. Jorden van Foreest, Richard Rapport, D Gukesh and Adhiban scored their first wins of the event. Arjun Erigaisi and Luis Paulo Supi suffered their second consecutive loss. Magnus Carlsen won his second game in-a-row. Nodirbek Abdusattorov drew his game against Levon Aronian to stay a full point ahead 6/8. Giri and So continue their chase at 5/8 each. In the Challengers, Donchenko maintained his sole lead by 6/8. Mustafa Yilmaz beeat Javokhir Sindarov to move to shared second place with Velimir Ivic 5.5/8. Today is a rest day. Himal Gusain dominates Surya Trophy Rating Open 2022

Top seed of the tournament, IM Himal Gusain scored a staggering 9.5/10 to win Surya Trophy Rating Open 2022. He finished a full point ahead of the field. 10-year-old Aansh Nandan Nerurkar scored 8.5/10 to finish second. His sole loss of the event was against the eventual champion, Himal. IM Rahul Sangma scored 8/10 to finish third. None of the podium finishers needed tie-break to determine their final rank. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹500000. The top three prizes were ₹75000, ₹50000 and ₹25000 along with a trophy each. As a fan of the sport, one could not have asked for a better day at the Tata Steel Chess 2023. The seventh round witnessed the maximum number of decisive games in both Masters and Challengers section. Nodirbek Abdusattorov defeated Arjun Erigaisi to increase his sole lead by a full point 5.5/7. R Praggnanandhaa and Wesley So won their respective games to join Anish Giri and Fabiano Caruana at 4.5/7 each. Magnus Carlsen got back to winning ways by defeating Richard Rapport. 14-year-old Sreyas Payyappat wins Johnson Pallippatt Memorial 7th Don Bosco Rating Open 2022

14-year-old FM Sreyas Payyappat scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win Johnson Pallippatt Memorial 7th Don Bosco Rating Open 2022. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. Despite missing the first round, the top seed of the tournament went on to win the next eight games to win the tournament. Marthandan K U and Jake Shanty scored 7.5/9 each and remained undefeated. They were placed second and third respectively according to tie-breaks. Total prize fund of the tournament was ₹301000. Tata Steel 2023 R6: So and Caruana win, Abdusattorov still in sole lead

Wesley So and Fabiano Caruana are the two victors of the sixth round at 85th Tata Steel Chess Masters 2023. Vincent Keymer went wrong in the endgame which cost him the full point against So. D Gukesh made some wrong calls early in the middlegame which gave his opponent, the former World Championship Challenger, a substantial positional advantage. Arjun Erigaisi had another exciting draw, this time against Anish Giri. R Praggnanandhaa drew his game against the sole leader of the tournament, Nodirbek Abdusattorov. IM Vaishali, GM Donchenko and GM Erwin scored a win each in the Challenger section. Mumbai's 2nd GM Aditya Mittal to be felicitated by Mumbai's 1st GM Pravin Thipsay

The ChessBase India Chess Club at Phoenix Marketcity, Mumbai is going to host an epic event on 21st of January 2023. 16-year-old Aditya Mittal became India's 77th GM and Mumbai's 2nd GM recently. He will be felicitated by Mumbai's 1st GM Pravin Thipsay. But before the felicitation Aditya will be playing a clock simul against 10 opponents with 1 hour each! The idea is to give a chance to some of the most regular players of the club to cross swords and learn from one of the best youngsters of Indian chess. IM Sagar Shah will commentate on the simul. The event is open and free for all the chess lovers to come and visit!

Khelo Chess India Late R Satyamurthy Memorial Rapid Open to take place this Sunday 22nd January

Last month ChessBase India started the journey of Khelo Chess India at Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh.  The first edition comprised a chess workshop, a blindfold match and a simultaneous exhibition match with few selected school children. The second event will be a rapid tournament. It will be held in memory of Late R Satyamurthy. He was the first national level player of the state. He led the state in the National Senior Championship in 1959 while working for the Indian Railways back then. He made great efforts to promote chess in Bhopal. The one-day seven round Rapid tournnament will take place on Sunday 22nd January 2023 at Minaleswar Temple Hall.

Tata Steel Masters 2023 R5: Abdusattorov beats Carlsen, gains sole lead and now World no.18

The 44th Olympiad Gold medalist, Nodirbek Abdusattorov defeated Magnus Carlsen in fifth round of 85th Tata Steel Masters 2023. The former World Rapid champion won against the reigning champion similarly as his first win back at World Rapid 2021. The world no.1 could not navigate a way to bring his king to g7 or h7 in the queen endgame, which would have been a theoretical draw as mentioned by the teenager. Speaking of teenagers, Arjun Erigaisi had an exciting game against Ding Liren which the former saved from the brink of a loss. Gukesh and Praggnanandhaa drew with Rapport and Giri respectively. Astana to host FIDE World Championship match 2023

The FIDE World Championship 2023 is due to take place in Astana, Kazakhstan, from April 7th to May 1st. A new World Champion will be crowned, as Ian Nepomniachtchi and Ding Liren will battle to seize the throne left vacant by Magnus Carlsen’s withdrawal. The General Partner of the event, which boasts a sensational prize fund of 2 million euros, will be NASDAQ-listed firm Freedom Holding Corp, a US-based corporation with Kazakh roots that provides financial services.
