49th National Women 2023 R9: Mary escapes against Mrudul

The top six boards ended in draws. IM Bhakti Kulkarni (Goa) and IM Padmini Rout (PSPB) had the same result as their last rated game encounter over seven years. Bhakti maintains her sole lead 7.5/9. Five players are trailing her by a half point. They are - WGM Srija Seshadri (TN), WGM Mary Ann Gomes (PSPB), WIM Mahalakshmi M (TN), WIM Mrudul Dehankar (MAH) and IM Padmini Rout (PSPB). Mrudul had a great opportunity to go for a win against Mary. Unfortunately for her, she could not find it. The reigning Telangana State Women champion, Sarayu Velpula is having a fantastic tournament. She drew against WGM Swati Ghate (LIC) to remain undefeated at 6.5/9. Sammed Jaykumar Shete dominates Nipani Grand Rapid Rating Open 2023

IM Sammed Jaykumar Shete (MAH) scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win Nipani Grand Rapid Rating Open 2023. He finished a full point ahead of the field. Shriraj Bhosale (MAH), IM Ramnathan Balasubramaniam (TN) and Saurish Kashelkar (MAH) scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed second, third and fourth according to tie-breaks. Sammed's sole draw of the event was against the eventual second runner-up, Balasubramaniam. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹100000. The top three prizes were ₹21001, ₹12506 and ₹10004 along with a trophy each respectively. The tournament was organized in memory of Late Sou Ratanbai Bhaichand Shah, Akkolkar on 17th to 18th June 2023 at Sri Venkatesh Mandir, Nipani in Belgaum, Karnataka. SuperUnited R&B 2023 Day 3: Gukesh beats Anand in their first-ever tournament face off

Vishy Anand started the third day of SuperUnited Rapid and Blitz 2023 with a draw against Jan-Krzysztof Duda. Then he was paired against his WACA mentee, D Gukesh. In their first-ever tournament battle, Gukesh prevailed. The teenager might have lost his previous round game against Fabiano Caruana, however, he showed a lot of promise. The world no.13 took his chances but unfortunately could not follow through. Against the maestro, he played fantastic and got a dominating position. Once the legend erred in an already difficult position, Gukesh seized his opportunity and won. He finished the day with a solid draw against Duda in their first-ever rated Rapid game. 49th National Women 2023 R8: Bhakti Kulkarni still in sole lead

IM Bhakti Kulkarni (Goa) got a few good opportunities to extend her lead in the eighth round of 49th National Women Chess Championship 2023. It has been over a decade since Bhakti defeated WGM Mary Ann Gomes (PSPB) in a rated game. She had a few chances in the endgame, unfortunately for her, she could not seize them. The only other pursuer, WIM Mahalakshmi M (RSPB) held IM Soumya Swaminathan (PSPB) to a solid draw. It allowed WGM Srija Seshadri (TN), WIM Mrudul Dehankar (MAH) and IM Padmini Rout (PSPB) to reduce the gap with the leader 6.5/8. It will be Padmini vs Bhakti on the top board in Round 9 which starts today at 10 a.m. IST.

Supratim Ghosh dominates 14th KIIT International Chess Festival C Below 1600 Rating Tournament 2023

Supratim Ghosh scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win 14th KIIT International Chess Festival C Below 1600 Rating Tournament 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the field. Divyanshu Kumar Singh and Gaurav Sharma scored 8/9 each. They were placed second and third according to tie-breaks. Divyanshu's sole loss of the event was against the eventual champion, Supratim. The total prize fund of the entire festival combining three events was ₹3200000, for Category C it was ₹600000. The top three prizes were ₹60000, ₹40000 and ₹30000 along with a trophy each respectively. The tournament was held from 15th to 18th June 2023 at KIIT Campus 9, Patia in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. SuperUnited R&B 2023 Day 2: Is Magnus Carlsen's invincibility waning?

There was a time when Magnus Carlsen rarely lost a rated game. That seems to be changing in recent times. The world no.1 started his second day at SuperUnited Rapid and Blitz 2023 with two losses. One against Fabiano Caruana (USA) where the Norwegian seemed to have gotten surprised by his opponent's choice of 6...Na5. The second loss against Alireza Firouzja (FRA) froze Magnus Carlsen for 17 seconds. Of course, he was trying to figure out what cost him the game. He finished the day by ending the legend, Vishy Anand's unbeaten streak at this event. Currently, Caruana, Ian Nepomniachtchi and Anand are tied with the same score 8/12. D Gukesh had a better second day. He is now at shared fourth place with Jan-Krzysztof Duda (POL) 7/12. Final day of Rapid commences with Round 7 from 3 p.m. local time, 6:30 p.m. IST. 49th National Women 2023 R7: Bhakti Kulkarni gains sole lead

IM Bhakti Kulkarni (Goa) defeated IM Soumya Swaminathan (PSPB) to emerge sole leader 6.5/7 at 49th National Women Championship 2023. In a battle of former National Women champions, Bhakti made a beautiful staircase pawn break at the center of the board. She might not have correctly capitalized on her advantage. However, her opponent's erroneous play allowed her to regain control and win the game convincingly. WGM Mary Ann Gomes (PSPB) and WIM Mahalakshmi M (RSPB) won their respective games against WIM Mounika Akshaya Bommini (AP) and Rebecca Jesumarian (TN). Sham R, Gyana Sai Santhosh M and Bishal Basak scored 8.5/10 each at 14th KIIT International Chess Festival B Below 1900 Rating Tournament 2023. Sham won the tournament due to better tie-breaks. Gyana was placed second and Bishal third. Only Sham remained undefeated among the three. The total prize fund of the entire festival combining three events was ₹3200000, for Category B it was ₹600000. The top three prizes were ₹60000, ₹45000 and ₹35000 along with a trophy each respectively. The tournament was held from 11th to 14th June 2023 at KIIT Campus 9, Patia in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. 8th Johor International Chess Open 2023 begins

After winning Professsor Lim Kok Ann Open 2023 and finishing second on tie-breaks at Thailand Open 2023, GM Diptayan Ghosh is now the top seed at 8th Johor Open 2023. Peter Long who is playing after almost 13 years, writes from the tournament location, Johor Bahru, Malaysia. Peter's last event was 39th Chess Olympiad back in September 2009. The tournament has two sections - Masters and Amateurs. A total of 24 players including four GMs and eight IMs are taking part from seven countries across the world in the Masters section. The average rating is 2303. Total prize fund is RM 125000, RM 90000 in the Masters and RM 35000 in the Amateurs. The winner of the Masters will earn RM 22000 (approx. ₹389378). Vishy Anand continues his great form from Tech Mahindra Global Chess League. He scored an impressive 5/6 on the first day of Grand Chess Tour SuperUnited Rapid and Blitz 2023. After starting with a solid draw against Alireza Firouzja (FRA), the maestro defeated the Romanian players - Richard Rapport and Constantin Lupulescu. The legend is now in sole lead. D Gukesh did not have the ideal start. He lost to Magnus Carlsen (NOR) and then recovered well by sharing points against Ian Nepomniachtchi and Firouzja. The defending champion IM Divya Deshmukh (MAH) had already shown chinks in her armour. She blundered a piece early in the middlegame against IM Soumya Swaminathan (PSPB). The former National Women champion does not let these opportunities slip by. IM Bhakti Kulkarni (Goa) also scored a win similarly. Her opponent, WGM Srija Seshadri (TN) dropped a piece for no reason and succumbed easily. Soumya and Bhakti will invitably face each other in Round 7. FIDE World Cup 2023: Players lists and pairings announced

A total of 17 Indians, five more than previous edition, are set to take part in the upcoming FIDE World Cup and FIDE Women's World Cup 2023. First game of the first round is on 30th July. Five Indians in the Open and three among Women got a Bye in the first round due to being in the top 50 and 25 seeds. The remaining five in the Open and four among Women have to play their first round matches. Wenjun Ju starts her Women's World Championship defense against Tingjie Lei starting today

The FIDE Women's World Championship Match 2023 starts today in Shanghai, China from 3 p.m. local time, 12:30 p.m. IST. The reigning Women's World Championn, Wenjun is set to defend her world title for the third time in her career. The Challenger Tingjie Lei won the Women's Candidates against the former Women's World Champion, Zhongyi Tan. At the draw of lots, Tingjie got the white pieces in Game 1. With Ding Liren becoming the new world champion few months ago, one thing is for sure, China is going to have a world champion in both Open and Women for at least another year.
