Giri makes the Final Four | Legends of Chess Round 8

With one round to go in the preliminaries, the Legends of Chess has had 3 out of the final 4 decided. Anish Giri joins Magnus Carlsen, who beat fellow qualifier Ian Nepomniachtchi, despite losing in the Armageddon to Ivanchuk, as his consistent performances in the last few matches sees him make the cut with a round to spare. Peter Svidler bests Vladimir Kramnik to leave himself as the favourite to qualify last with a round to go. Ding Liren conquers Anand with a game to spare, winning both games with Black to regain his confidence for future events. An exhaustive report by Tanmay Srinath.

Talk of the Universe: Ganguly in conversation with Humpy

Koneru Humpy is the current World no.2 among Women. She won the FIDE World Rapid Championship last year in December. Earlier this year she won the second edition of Cairns Cup. Apart from the usual chess tournament interviews, we don't get to hear much from Humpy. Surya Sekhar Ganguly continues to bring in various top players from the chess universe and he manages to unravel the side of the players we haven't seen, the stories we haven't heard. In the two-part Live interview, Ganguly discusses Humpy's first step into chess, her initial years, her father playing a key role in her chess career, how she handled criticism, her triumph, comeback after two years of break and much more. Finally! After a disappointing start to the event where he lost his first 6 matches, Vishy Anand roared back into form! He cruised past his 2012 challenger Boris Gelfand 2.5-0.5 to get his first match win of the event! Magnus Carlsen and Ian Nepomniachtchi are now through to the semifinal stage after contrasting match wins over Svidler and Leko. The race for the other two spots becomes tighter and tighter, as Vladimir Kramnik suffered a surprising 3-1 loss against Vassily Ivanchuk to hand the Ukrainian Wizard a golden opportunity to fight for qualification. Anish Giri is simply playing like a different player now, as the Dutchman condemned Ding to a 2.5-0.5 loss in what has clearly been the worst tournament in the Chinese No.1's recent career. Biel GMT Round 5: Harikrishna scores a brilliant win against Wojtaszek

Harikrishna scored a much needed victory with the black pieces against Wojtaszek in Round 5 of 53rd Biel Chess Festival GMT. This win made sure that Harikrishna remains in the title fray and he is now just three points behind the leader Wojtaszek. Adams suffered a loss against Anton Guijarro. The Spanish GM found his form back in the Blitz event. Keymer scored a comfortable victory against Studer. He will face Wojtaszek in the penultimate round today which will definitely play a huge role in deciding who stays in the title hunt. Edouard missed a couple of good chances against Naiditsch. Carlsen subdues Ding | Legends of Chess Round 6

With 3 rounds to go, it seems that the fight for first place is more or less a two horse race now. Magnus Carlsen started the day 4 hours ahead of the rest, as the champions' Fantasy Football commitments took priority later in the day, and managed to overpower Ding Liren to take over sole first. Nepomniachtchi needed an Armageddon and some luck to overcome Vishy Anand, who now seems out of qualifying contention. Peter Leko and Anish Giri played a fighting match with 3 decisive results, but the Dutchman scored 2 of those wins and stays in the hunt for a top 4 finish. Vladimir Kramnik should have lost the match against Gelfand in 3 games, but a combination of skill and will meant he equalised and took the Armageddon, taking sole third place in the process. Peter Svidler scraped past Ivanchuk to keep in touch with the top places, as the tournament heads for an exciting finish. Hard luck for Harikrishna in Biel GMT Blitz

Harikrishna had a hard time in the Blitz as he scored only 6.0/14 and finished fifth. It resulted him in dropping to third place in the overall standings of 53rd Biel Chess Festival GMT and the gap between him and the tournament leader Wojtaszek increased to seven points. Circumstantially, Harikrishna will face Wojtaszek in Round 5 after rest day. Wojtaszek remained undefeated in the Blitz and scored 11.0/14 along with Adams. The latter lost to Wojtaszek by 1.5-0.5. Nepo stops Kramnik, catches Carlsen | Legends of Chess Round 5

At the halfway mark, we finally begin to have some clarity in the standings! Ian Nepomniachtchi cruised past Peter Svidler 3-1, catching Magnus Carlsen, who needed an Armageddon to seal a comeback win over Vassily Ivanchuk. Vladimir Kramnik continues his hot streak, this time beating the out-of-sorts Ding Liren to claim sole third place with 10 points, 4 behind the leaders. Anish Giri continued to slowly climb up the rankings, this time beating Boris Gelfand, who has suddenly lost 3 matches in a row after a brilliant start. Peter Leko played the better chess in the entire match against Vishy Anand, but had to win the Armageddon game to go through after losing a winning position in Game 1. On 25th of July 2020 something unbelievable happened on ChessBase India's YouTube channel. Since last two months, we have been having the show "Improving Chess with the comedians" where IM Sagar Shah has been meticulously training three comedians - Samay Raina, Biswa Kalyan Rath and Vaibhav Sethia, along with the thousands of viewers who tune in to watch it each day. Today, was the 57th episode and it just looked like another day at business, when beautiful things began to happen! The entire community got together and guess what?! Before we knew it over Rs.4,62,734 were raised! Read on to know what happened!

Carlsen storms past Gelfand for sole lead | Legends of Chess Round 4

After 4 rounds of riveting action, we finally have a sole leader! Magnus Carlsen won his 4th match in a row, this time doing a hat-trick of wins on Boris Gelfand, while overnight co-leader Peter Svidler lost narrowly to Ding Liren, giving the Chinese No.1 his 1st match win of the event! Anish Giri won on time against Vishy Anand in the Armageddon despite having Black(!), but the latter finally got off the mark. Nepo beat Ivanchuk in the final game of their match to climb up to sole second behind Carlsen.Vladimir Kramnik continues to stun one and all with his extraordinary play, this time taking down old foe Peter Leko with Black in game 4, and is now in 4th place. Biel GMT Round 4: Harikrishna beats Keymer

Harikrishna scored a fantastic victory over Vincent Keymer with a brilliant positional sacrifice and jumped to the second spot in the standings with 18.5 points. Wojtaszek scored a fine victory to get back in the lead with 20.5 points. The other victor in the round was local GM Noel Studer who outplayed his opponent Anton Guijarro right out of the opening. Adams had a quiet draw with Edouard. Today, Saturday 25th July, all eight players will have a double Round-Robin Blitz event, part of the GMT. Girish Koushik Glorious in M D Bhagwat Memorial Chess960 Online Blitz Open

Buddhibal Kreeda Trust organized their third online event in four months, their second Chess960 event during this pandemic period. GM Girish A Koushik performed brilliantly as he scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win the championship. This was his first ever ChessBase India Online Blitz event triumph. World no.1 in Under-16 GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov scored 7.5/9 and finished sole second. Five players finished at 7.0/9. GM Raunak Sadhwani continued his fantastic form and finished third with a score of 7.0/9. Vladimir Kramnik outplays Vishy Anand | Legends of Chess Round 3

The Legends of Chess tournament continues to throw surprises! Retirement fails to slow down Kramnik, who took down Anand in a match for the ages! Vassily Ivanchuk comfortably beat a hapless Ding Liren to register his first match win of the event. Nepo got past Giri with a game to spare despite having lost positions in all 3 games. Peter Leko played much better than Magnus Carlsen, but the World Champion profited from a mouse slip to win the final game and the match. Biel GMT Round 3: Harikrishna survives a scare

Vincent Keymer and David Anton Guijarro score the wins in Round 3 of 53rd Biel Chess Festival GMT. Keymer continued his fantastic form as he beat Naiditsch with a fine attack. Although Naiditsch had an opportunity to save the attack but he missed it. Meanwhile Anton Guijarro got a better position out of the opening as his opponent Edouard misplayed the theory. Harikrishna got away with a draw against Studer after he blundered by taking a pawn at the center of the board. Wojtaszek and Adams had an uneventful draw. Carlsen beats Anand | Legends of Chess Round 2

The 2nd Day of the Chess24 Legends of Chess was markedly different from the first. All 5 mini matches were decided without an Armageddon, and Nepo didn't even need 4 games - he managed to dismantle Ding Liren's weak play in 3! Magnus Carlsen outlasted Vishy Anand, Anish Giri made a comeback by beating Vladimir Kramnik, though not without fuss. Peter Svidler continued his excellent run by winning bad positions against Peter Leko, and Gelfand's decisive Alpha Zero attack got him a clutch 4th game win against Ivanchuk, ensuring the same 3 players lead after Round 2 - Carlsen, Svidler and Gelfand.
