The Wijk Aan Zee Storytellers by Eric van Reem

It's called the Wimbledon of Chess, and is one of the longest standing event in the world of chess right now. The town of Wijk Aan Zee completed its 83rd edition - a tournament that began in 1938 and the only year that it was cancelled was in 1945 due to World War II. Such great memories are attached with the Tata Steel Masters, formerly known as the Hoogoveens and Corus Masters. Eric van Reem, chess journalist, photographer and organizer, who has been closely involved with the tournament, decided to start a series of interview podcasts called "The Wijk Aan Zee Storytellers." His reason? To ensure the memories stay alive for posterity! Big things have small beginnings

Covid-19 pandemic has had a big impact on mankind. Chess is a sport which is not just about championships and titles, triumph and tragedies, it is so much more. Chess can be used as a tool to edify the society and improve human nature. As it is the only sport in history which can be played by anyone, anywhere and anytime. There is no age restriction and you don't need to be in athletic physical shape to play it. 1st Vezerkepzo IM R8: Leon takes a full point lead heading into the final round

Leon extended his lead to a full point 7.5/8 as he beat IM Sandor Farago of Hungary convincingly in the penultimate round of 1st Vezerkepzo IM Round-Robin. His closest rival in the event is GM Milan Pacher who is at 6.5/8. They will clash against each other in the final round to decide the winner. Leon needs just a draw to win the event, however a win in the final round means he will finish two points ahead of the competition which will assert his dominance. In case you are wondering what is India's 67th GM up to lately, we must tell you that he is back in his form. After having a difficult outing at Vergani Cup in Italy at the beginning of this year, Leon is back at the top, currently leading 1st Vezerkepzo IM Round-Robin tournament at Budapest, Hungary. Jorden Van Foreest wins and brings Tata Steel Chess Championship back home after 36 years

Anish Giri once again repeated his 2018 tie-break result and finished as the runner-up in 83rd Tata Steel Chess 2021. Despite playing fantastic throughout the event, he had a difficulty against Anton. Jorden scored a fantastic victory over Grandelius to set tie-breaks against Giri and guaranteed for a Dutch to win the tournament. Giri had his fair share of chances in both first blitz and Armageddon but he was unable to seize them. Esipenko made a fantastic debut as he finished third with 8.0/13. Two-day beginners' chess camp held at Jammu

All J and K Chess Association organized a two-day chess camp for beginners at Nek Hotel in Jammu on 24th and 25th January 2021. Atul Kumar Gupta, President of All J and K Chess Association and Joint Secretary of All India Chess Federation along with Vivek Bharti, reputed trainer of J&K, took the sessions to inculcate various aspects of the game. Can Anish Giri win 83rd Tata Steel Masters 2021?

Anish Giri is poised to win the 83rd Tata Steel Chess Masters 2021. However he fumbled a completely winning endgame against Firouzja and allowed the youngster to walk away with a draw. Giri's pursuers Jorden and Caruana both made a draw each respectively. Carlsen was also held to a draw by Wojtaszek. Thus for the first time since 2018, Giri is guaranteed to finish ahead of Carlsen in Tata Steel Masters, irrespective of the final round result. Now that Carlsen cannot catch up to him, perhaps Giri would like to win the final game against Anton and avoid tie-breaks and repeat a 2018 scenario. Tata Steel Masters R11: Giri is still in the sole lead

Anish Giri continues his fantastic run in the 83rd Tata Steel Chess Masters 2021 as he held Carlsen to a solid draw. With this draw, Giri maintained his sole lead at 7.5/11. Firouzja-Caruana had an exciting draw as both sides had decent chances but neither seized them. They are joined by Jorden Van Foreest at the shared second spot with 7.0/11. Dutch no.2 Jorden beat Harikrishna after the latter misplayed in the opening. With two rounds to go, Giri is definitely looking to be the favorite to clinch the championship. Expo 2020 Dubai to host FIDE World Chess Championship

FIDE World Chess Championship was supposed to take place in 2020. However due to pandemic, much like every other major event, the World Championship also had to be delayed. The reigning world champion Magnus Carlsen is set to defend his title this year at Expo 2020 Dubai starting on 24th November against the winner of FIDE Candidates Championship which is supposed to resume in Spring. Currently the Candidates is led by Vachier-Lagrave and Nepomniachtchi after the conclusion of the first half. Photo: FIDE

Tata Steel Masters R10: Giri takes sole lead

Anish Giri is consistently playing well in Tata Steel Masters 2021 and he finally took a sole lead 7.0/10 by beating Wojtaszek in the tenth round. Just when everybody thought that their game will end up in a draw, the Pole blundered and Giri claimed the victory. Esipenko scored a victory over Anton to bring himself closer to the title picture with 6.5/10. Vachier-Lagrave scored his first victory of the event over Donchenko. Caruana and Firouzja drew their respective games to be in the shared second spot at 6.5/10. Harikrishna was held to a draw by Tari, he is at 5.0/10. 1st FIDE Online World Corporate Chess Championship 2021 registration is on

Last month FIDE announced about 1st FIDE Online World Corporate Chess Championship which will take place between 19th and 21st February 2021 on online platform chess.com. The schedule has been kept in such a way so that no one misses any of their work. The tournament has no registration fees. However, teams, companies and fans are encouraged to donate to a charitable cause such as the Chess Veterans Support program and/or the Chess in Education program for kids. ALOK, LIC and TCS are the Indian teams among the provisional teams list along with American Express, Autodesk, facebook, Morgan Stanley to name a few. Registration deadline is 6th February 2021. Tata Steel Masters R9: Giri regains his lead

One of the most anticipated match of Round 9 between Firouzja and Esipenko ended up in a draw. Giri defeated Vachier-Lagrave to regain his lead. Caruana made a unique choice against Wojtaszek which eventually paid off. The three of them - Giri, Caruana and Firouzja now share the lead with 6.0/9. Carlsen scored his second win of the event, this time Grandelius was his victim. He moves to 5.0/9. Harikrishna was held to a solid draw by Anton. He is now at 4.5/9.
