Carlsen storms past Gelfand for sole lead | Legends of Chess Round 4

After 4 rounds of riveting action, we finally have a sole leader! Magnus Carlsen won his 4th match in a row, this time doing a hat-trick of wins on Boris Gelfand, while overnight co-leader Peter Svidler lost narrowly to Ding Liren, giving the Chinese No.1 his 1st match win of the event! Anish Giri won on time against Vishy Anand in the Armageddon despite having Black(!), but the latter finally got off the mark. Nepo beat Ivanchuk in the final game of their match to climb up to sole second behind Carlsen.Vladimir Kramnik continues to stun one and all with his extraordinary play, this time taking down old foe Peter Leko with Black in game 4, and is now in 4th place. With 5 rounds to go, everything is still up for grabs as the tournament approaches the halfway phase. Tanmay Srinath brings forth a comprehensive report.

Biel GMT Round 4: Harikrishna beats Keymer

Harikrishna scored a fantastic victory over Vincent Keymer with a brilliant positional sacrifice and jumped to the second spot in the standings with 18.5 points. Wojtaszek scored a fine victory to get back in the lead with 20.5 points. The other victor in the round was local GM Noel Studer who outplayed his opponent Anton Guijarro right out of the opening. Adams had a quiet draw with Edouard. Today, Saturday 25th July, all eight players will have a double Round-Robin Blitz event, part of the GMT. Round 5 of the Classical event will resume from Monday 27th July. Saturday 26th July is a rest day for the GMT participants. Who do you think will win the Blitz event today? Girish Koushik Glorious in M D Bhagwat Memorial Chess960 Online Blitz Open

Buddhibal Kreeda Trust organized their third online event in four months, their second Chess960 event during this pandemic period. GM Girish A Koushik performed brilliantly as he scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win the championship. This was his first ever ChessBase India Online Blitz event triumph. World no.1 in Under-16 GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov scored 7.5/9 and finished sole second. Five players finished at 7.0/9. GM Raunak Sadhwani continued his fantastic form and finished third with a score of 7.0/9. Vladimir Kramnik outplays Vishy Anand | Legends of Chess Round 3

The Legends of Chess tournament continues to throw surprises! Retirement fails to slow down Kramnik, who took down Anand in a match for the ages! Vassily Ivanchuk comfortably beat a hapless Ding Liren to register his first match win of the event. Nepo got past Giri with a game to spare despite having lost positions in all 3 games. Peter Leko played much better than Magnus Carlsen, but the World Champion profited from a mouse slip to win the final game and the match. Biel GMT Round 3: Harikrishna survives a scare

Vincent Keymer and David Anton Guijarro score the wins in Round 3 of 53rd Biel Chess Festival GMT. Keymer continued his fantastic form as he beat Naiditsch with a fine attack. Although Naiditsch had an opportunity to save the attack but he missed it. Meanwhile Anton Guijarro got a better position out of the opening as his opponent Edouard misplayed the theory. Harikrishna got away with a draw against Studer after he blundered by taking a pawn at the center of the board. Wojtaszek and Adams had an uneventful draw. Carlsen beats Anand | Legends of Chess Round 2

The 2nd Day of the Chess24 Legends of Chess was markedly different from the first. All 5 mini matches were decided without an Armageddon, and Nepo didn't even need 4 games - he managed to dismantle Ding Liren's weak play in 3! Magnus Carlsen outlasted Vishy Anand, Anish Giri made a comeback by beating Vladimir Kramnik, though not without fuss. Peter Svidler continued his excellent run by winning bad positions against Peter Leko, and Gelfand's decisive Alpha Zero attack got him a clutch 4th game win against Ivanchuk, ensuring the same 3 players lead after Round 2 - Carlsen, Svidler and Gelfand. Biel GMT Round 2: Adams scores the sole victory

Michael Adams scores the sole victory in Round 2 against Vincent Keymer. Adams punished Keymer for his positional mistake and later converted the game from a winning Queen ending with a beautiful technique to move to the third position with 13.5 points. Despite suffering a loss Keymer isn't far behind as he is at the second position with 14 points. Wojtaszek jumped into the lead with 15 points after making a draw with Anton Guijarro. Harikrishna is now at the fourth position with 13 points. He made a solid draw with Naiditsch. Top four players are very close to each other within the range of two points. Vaibhav Suri wins Letsup MCA Online Blitz Grand Prix

GM Vaibhav Suri scored 31 points to win Letsup MCA Grand Prix Blitz Online. Despite not winning a single leg, making a podium finish in the first three leg made him a favorite to win the GP. World no.1 in Under-16 GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov was in a race to win the GP as he won two legs, however Vaibhav made better finish in the final two legs which allowed him to have a better best of four score than the newly crowned Asian Junior Online champion from Uzbekistan. Carlsen too strong for Giri | Legends of Chess Round 1

The Chess24 Legends of Chess tournament kicked off on 21st July with its preliminaries, where 6 legends of the sport and 4 younger geniuses fight it out over 4-game rapid matches with Armageddon Tiebreakers. Day 1 saw 3 mini-matches being decided outright, as Carlsen, Gelfand and Svidler managed to beat Giri, Ding and Anand respectively in contrasting styles. Nepomniachtchi and Leko needed Armageddons to see off Kramnik and Ivanchuk after tying the match in 'regular time'. 53rd Biel GMT: Harikrishna starts with a draw

Harikrishna launched a strong attack against Michael Adams but the English GM put up a staunch defence which forced the point to be split. The Biel Chess960 winner Harikrishna is currently at the third position, followed by Adams. Vincent Keymer jumped into the sole lead as he scored a comfortable victory over Spanish GM David Anton Guijarro. The only other victor in the round was Arkadij Naiditsch who punished his opponent local GM Noel Studer for his positional errors. Meanwhile Wojtaszek made a draw with Romain Edouard to remain just a half point behind the leader after Round 1. In this two-part series, Anish Giri appeared with his wife Sopiko Guramishvili on their fifth wedding anniversary. Their cute little son Daniel also made a short and sweet appearance at the beginning of part 1. While the first part has Rapid fire, Blindfold game and Know-your-partner quiz games along with various games of Anish Giri, in the second part we get to see Giri answering a lot of questions asked by the fans. Harikrishna finishes second in Biel GMT Rapid

Pentala Harikrishna continued his momentum from the previous day as he scored an unbeaten 10 points to secure second position. Polish GM Radoslaw Wojtaszek won the Rapid event by scoring 12 points. Harikrishna came very close to defeating him but the game ended up in a draw. Both of them remained undefeated in the Rapid. German GM Vincent Keymer also scored 10 points. He finished third according to the tie-break score. Monday 20th July is a rest day. Classical part of the GMT (Grandmaster Triathlon) will begin from Tuesday 21st July. Humpy loses in the Finals of the Speed Chess Championship 2020

Humpy's brilliant run at the final leg of FIDE chess.com Women's Speed Chess Championship came to an end as she lost to former Women's World Champion Alexandra Kosteniuk by 5-7. The score was equal 3.5-3.5 after Game 7 and Humpy almost had a decisive advantage in Game 8 which was also the last Blitz game of the Finals. However she misplayed her position and allowed Kosteniuk to get the upper hand. Three consecutive losses was a big blow to Humpy's momentum and it was surmountable for her to make a comeback.
