Goldmoney Asian Rapid QF Day 2: Arjun's dream debut comes to an end

Arjun Erigaisi's phenomenal debut at the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Goldmoney Asian Rapid came to an end as he lost the tie-breaks. Arjun played absolutely fantastic chess for five days against the best of the best of the world and he managed to hold his own. Aronian will face Carlsen in the Semi-Finals who had to beat his nemesis So in the blitz tie-breaks to secure his place. Artemiev once again dominated Giri, as he is yet to lose a single game in the Knockout stage. Ding Liren made a strong comeback to beat Duda and setup a clash with Artemiev in the next stage. Semi-Finals will start today from 4:30 p.m. IST.

Sensational Nihal clinches Silver Lake Open 2021

Nihal Sarin scored a victory in the last round to win Silver Lake Open 2021 with an unbeaten 8.0/9, a full point ahead of the competition. Nihal performed at 2807, gained 17 Elo rating points. He needed to win the last round to become a clear champion because a draw meant Raunak's result would decide his fate. Both runner-up Raunak Sadhwani and second runner-up Abhimanyu Puranik scored 7.0/9 each and they were also undefeated. They were placed second and third respectively according to their tie-breaks. Goldmoney Asian Rapid QF Day 1: Arjun Erigaisi ends Aronian's unbeaten streak

Arjun Erigaisi ended Aronian's undefeated run at the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Goldmoney Asian Rapid. He beat the two-time World Cup winner in their very second game of the Quarter-Finals. The set ended in 2-2. Duda and Ding Liren also had 2-2 score in their grueling first set. Carlsen and Artemiev won the first set against So and Giri respectively. While So managed to equalize the first set by winning the second game then he lost the third and drew the fourth, Artemiev scored a hat-trick and won the first set by a 0-3 whitewash. So and Giri must win the second set to force tie-breaks. Quarter-Finals will continue today from 4:30 p.m. IST.

Silver Lake Open R7: Nihal extends his sole lead 6.5/7

Nihal scored a comfortable victory over Denis Makhnev as he imploded and launched a feeble attack. It cost him material and eventually the game. Sevene players including Abhimanyu, Raunak and Harshit are in pursuit for the championship at 5.5/7 each respectively. Raunak held top seed of the tournament, Ter-Sahakyan to a draw. Abhimanyu punished his opponent for making a mistake in the opening, Harshit wrecked his opponent's king to score a clinical victory. WIM Rakshitta Ravi held GM Bosko Abramovic to a draw. Arjun Erigaisi has been absolutely phenomenal in his debut at the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Goldmoney Asian Rapid. He remained undefeated on the final day of the Prelims. He became the first Indian to advance to the Quarter-Finals and also in his first attempt. The 17-year-old from Telangana will face two-time World Cup winner Aronian who topped the Prelims with an unbeaten 10.5/17. Another debutant who played fantastic is Gukesh. He drew with Svidler, Carlsen and Giri and beat Salem on the final day of the Prelims. Arjun and Gukesh showed when opportunity is presented they are ready to seize them. Leon makes a double hat-trick of tournament wins

GM Leon Luke Mendonca won all four Vezerkepzo tournaments he played this year. He won six consecutive over-the-board tournaments so far. The 15-year-old boy extended his tournament win streak by winning First Saturday IM May last month and then he won Vezerkepzo GM June. In both events, he finished 1.5 points ahead of the competition. His 48-game unbeaten streak came to an end when he lost to CM Tymon Ochedzan in the eighth round last month. Apart from these two over-the-board events, he also played for Team Kramnik in the Gelfand Challenge Julius Baer Challengers Chess Tour this month and finished ninth. Nihal Sarin is very determined to hit top gear before he begins his FIDE World Cup 2021 campaign next month. He showcased his endgame prowess against Manuel Petrosyan in Round 6 of Silver Lake Open to take the sole lead 5.5/6. He will face IM Denis Makhnev in the next round. Both Raunak and Abhimanyu drew their respective games. Raunak along with three other players are in the title fray at 5.0/6 each. Harshit, Rakshitta and Isha won their respective games. Arjun Erigaisi continued his fantastic momentum on the second day of the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Goldmoney Asian Rapid. He beat Vidit, Hou Yifan and drew with Firouzja, taking his score to 5.5/10, just a half point behind Carlsen and Giri. Gukesh also had a great day as he beat Vidit and Hou Yifan, drew with So and Arjun. Vidit had a tough day as he lost two consecutive games but he made draws against Ding Liren, Aronian and Firouzja. Adhiban registered his first victory of the event against Salem Saleh. If Arjun continues his form, he is very likely to advance to the Quarter-Finals. Round 11 starts today at 4:30 p.m. IST.

Raunak and Nihal made a short 19-move draw to maintain their lead 4.5/5 at the conclusion of the fifth round in Silver Lake Open 2021. Manuel Petrosyan of Armenia won his game to join the three-way lead. He will face Nihal Sarin in the sixth round. Raahil Mullick will face the top seed of the tournament, Samvel Ter-Sahakyan after winning his fifth round game. Abhimanyu Puranik moved to 4.0/5 by making a draw. The first day of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Goldmoney Asian Rapid had plenty of exciting games. Four Indians are taking part in this event, out of them Arjun Erigaisi made the most of his opportunity as he beat Dubov, drew with Duda, Adhiban and Ding Liren. Vidit got tricked by Giri in a completely winning endgame. He drew with Duda and Artemiev, beat Adhiban to finish the day with 2.5/5. Gukesh held Ding Liren to a draw. Both him and Adhiban are at 1.0/5. Five players - Carlsen, Artemiev, Dubov, Ding Liren and Aronian share the lead 3.5/5 at the end of Day 1. Round 6 starts today at 4:30 p.m. IST.

FIDE WSCC QF: Harika beats A Muzychuk, advances to the Semi-Final

Harika continued her phenomenal run in the FIDE chess.com Women's Speed Chess Championship to beat former Women's World Rapid and two-time Women's World Blitz champion, Anna Muzychuk. She started the final Bullet 1+1 segment with a score of 8.5-4.5, won the first three bullet games and increased her lead to 11.5-4.5 which became insurmountable for her opponent. Harika won the match 13.5-8.5, and she will face reigning Women's World Blitz champion Kateryna Lagno in the Semi-Finals. Lagno beat Nana Dzagnidze 14.0-8.0 in the Quarter-Finals. Raunak Sadhwani made a beautiful bishop sacrifice against IM Zhandos Agmanov to score a victory in Round 4 of Silver Lake Open 2021. Nihal Sarin capitalized on his opponent GM Ulvi Sadikhov's blunder in the endgame to join the lead with Raunak 4.0/4. Based on their present form, it was inevitable that Nihal and Raunak will face each other in the tournament. Their fourth round battle could play a crucial role in deciding the winner of the tournament eventually. GM Abhimanyu Puranik is steadily moving forward 3.5/4. The last major event before the FIDE World Cup, Goldmoney Asian Rapid starts on Saturday 26th June. It will feature four Indian players - Vidit Gujrathi, Baskaran Adhiban, D Gukesh and Arjun Erigaisi. Former women's world champion Hou Yifan will be the first woman to take part in a Meltwater Champions Chess Tour event. The tournament will witness only four players from the previous event and the remaining twelve players earned their spot via Qualifiers, Wildcards and public vote. It will undoubtedly be an exciting event. Catch Round 1 action starting tomorrow from 4:30 p.m. IST.
