Praggnanandhaa, Arjun Erigaisi and Adhiban to duke it out with Carlsen and co. at Julius Baer Generation Cup

The fifth Regular event of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour 2022 season is Julius Baer Generation Cup. Praggnanandhaa and Arjun Erigaisi will battle against Magnus Carlsen, Vasyl Ivanchuk and the world's best. The theme of the tournament is generation of chess. They will be joined by Jan-Krzysztof Duda, Liem Quang Le, Levon Aronian, Anish Giri, Vincent Keymer, David Navara, Radoslaw Wojtaszek, Ivan Saric, Boris Gelfand, Hans Niemann and Christopher Yoo. The 16th player was supposed to be the winner of MPL Indian Chess Tour leg 3, GM S L Narayanan. He is unable to take part due to his prior commitments. Ilamparthi A R and Pranav Anand are World Under-14 and Under-16 Open 2022 Champions

Pranav Anand added another accolade to his name after becoming India's 76th Grandmaster. He drew his final round game to clinch the Gold in World Youth Under-16 Open. That is not the only Gold medal India won at this event. Ilamparthi A R also won a Gold medal in the Under-14 Open category. He defeated Filip Magold (ROU) in the final round to finish with 9.5/11. He also won the Anish Giri Deathmatch scholarship worth ₹200000 which was announced yesterday after the boy claimed the Gold. The 12-year-old is also gaining 114.4 Elo rating points. 16/18 Indian participants are gaining rating. The highest gainer is Kanishka S. She is gaining a mammoth 282.4 Elo rating points. Vaishali will make her FIDE Women's GP debut at Astana, Kazakhstan

The first leg of the FIDE Women's Grand Prix 2022-23 will start at Astana, Kazakhstan from Sunday 18th September 2022. IM Vaishali R will be the sole Indian participant in the fray. She will replace Koneru Humpy only in this particular leg. The 12-player round robin event will feature GM Aleksandra Goryachkina, GM Kateryna Lagno, IM Alina Kashlinskaya, IM Bibisara Assaubayeva, GM Tan Zhongyi, WGM Dinara Wagner, IM Elisabeth Paehtz, WGM Zhu Jiner, GM Zhansaya Abdumalik, GM Alexandra Kosteniuk, IM Vaishali R and IM Polina Shuvalova. World Youth 2022: Pranav Anand becomes India's 76th Grandmaster

15-year-old IM Pranav Anand became India's 76th Grandmaster by winning against IM Emin Ohanyan (ARM) in Round 10 of World Youth Under-16 Open. He is now just a draw away from winning Gold. Ilamparthi A R is also on the verge of winning Gold in Under-14 Open category. He is also in a sole lead 8.5/10. However, he must win his final round game to not leave his fate on tie-breaks. Mrittika Mallick, Amulya Guruprasad and Anupam M Sreekumar - all three are at 7/10 each. Mrittika has the best tie-break among the medal contenders. Castling is a privilege which both sides have in each game. Despite the choice being two, a player can castle only once in the entire game. The choice often determines the fate of the game. It might seem easy, yet the underlying consequences of a correct or a misjudgement can be long term. While most of the time, castling becomes a part of a theoretical move, sometimes a player may have to take the correct call of their own accord. Mayank Chakraborty dominates 1st All Assam Rapid and Blitz Rating 2022

CM Mayank Chakraborty scored 9/9 and 7.5/8 to win 1st All Assam Rapid and Blitz Rating Chess Tournament 2022. He finished 1.5 and a full point ahead of the field in the Rapid and Blitz event respectively. Top seed in the Rapid, Rajib Dhar scored sole 7.5/9 to secure second place. Chiraranjan Bhuyan claimed the third place due to better tie-breaks scoring 7/9. In the Blitz event, five players scored 6.5/8. Trailokya Nanda and Manthan Kashyap Datta were adjudged second and third. The total prize fund in the Rapid was ₹45001 cash and trophies. Top three prizes were ₹9001, ₹6500 and ₹5000 along with a trophy each. Blitz event had a prize fund of ₹37000 and trophies. Top three won ₹7000, ₹4500 and ₹3500 with a trophy each. S L Narayanan wins 23rd Sants Open Barcelona 2022, Vaibhav Suri second

Top seed of the tournament GM S L Narayanan, GM Vaibhav Suri and GM Bobby Cheng (AUS) scored 8/10 each. Narayanan won the Playoffs to win 23rd Sants International Open Barcelona 2022. Vaibhav and Bobby were placed second and third. Ten players finished at 7.5/10. Out of them IM Aronyak Ghosh, GM Lalit Rohit and IM C R G Krishna were placed fourth, sixth and eighth according to the Playoffs. The Playoff results remained the same as their initial tie-breaks for the top eight finishers. Sadhana app sponsored, Aronyak earned his maiden GM-norm. Rupesh B Ramchandra is the winner of Chess for Everyone Rating Open in Bihar

Bihar's very own Rupesh B Ramchandra scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win Chess for Everyone Rating Open 2022. He finished a half point ahead of the field. Kamad Mishra and Ajay Santhosh Parvathareddy scored 7.5/9 each and remained undefeated. They were placed second and third according to tie-breaks. They both remained undefeated. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹51000 cash and trophies. Top three prizes were ₹12500, ₹7000 and ₹5000 along with a trophy each. The tournament 'Chess for Everyone' tournaments started by AICF in 2019 with the motive of maximum participation with low entry fee barrier to spread the game among masses and increase the number of rated players. S L Narayanan wins MPL Indian Chess Tour 2022 leg 3

S L Narayanan won the third leg of MPL Indian Chess Tour 2022. Just like the previous day, the last round had another anti-climactic finish. Narayanan lost to Leon Luke Mendonca and Aravindh drew with Harshit Raja. Both players finished the tournament with the same score 28/45, also the exact same tie-breaks. Since Narayanan beat Aravindh in Round 12, that became the decider in him clinching the tournament. B Adhiban scored 7/9 on the final day to finish third 25/45. Mitrabha Guha also scored the same, however he finished fourth on tie-breaks. He defeated Aravindh in the penultimate round which certainly affected the overall outcome. Photo: chess24

Carlsen's challenge solved

The year was 2013. Magnus Carlsen was about to play his first match against Viswanathan Anand, and he was knee-deep in preparation. One day, Magnus made a post on Facebook, sharing an endgame study set up on his board. He captioned the image " More preparation. White to move and win, shown from black's side."  A few days later when I was chatting with India's talented GM Vidit Gujarathi, he asked me if I had solved Carlsen's challenge which was extremely interesting. Dear reader, can you solve the Carlsen challenge?

Fantastic Firouzja clinches Grand Chess Tour and Sinquefield Cup 2022

19-year-old Alireza Firouzja delivered a remarkable performance at Saint Louis. After winning the Saint Louis Rapid and Blitz 2022, on 30th August, twelve days later, he won the Grand Chess Tour 2022 season and Sinquefield Cup too. The World no.4 won the entire tour before the Playoffs. In the Playoff he defeated Ian Nepomniachtchi 1.5-0.5, after the latter missed a good winning opportunity against Hans Niemann in the final round. He was quite upset at himself for missing it. Aravindh or S L Narayanan - Who will win MPL Indian Chess Tour 2022 leg 3?

Aravindh Chithambaram extended his win streak to eight games on the third day of MPL Indian Chess Tour leg 3. Nihal Sarin denied him a triple hat-trick in the tenth round. He drew the following round before losing the final game of the day against S L Narayanan. The birthday boy did not want to celebrate his 23rd birthday in this way. He is still in the sole lead 26/36, followed by Narayanan at 24/36. Raunak Sadhwani and Vidit Gujrathi are at 19/36 each. Only three rounds left which means it is safe to say that the championship will mainly be fought between Aravindh and Narayanan unless something drastic happens. Round 13 starts today at 3:30 p.m. IST.

44th Chess Olympiad: Report from a Volunteer

Sahil Batra was a volunteer in the Chennai Chess Olympiad 2022. He has been involved in the world of chess for more than 15 years - first as a player and then as a coach. Due to the immense love he has for the game, this event meant the world to him and he was lucky enough to have been selected as a volunteer and contributed his bit. In this short report, he writes about the selection process for the Volunteer program, his roles and duties, his experiences, and the things he learned.

Chhattisgarh CM Trophy 2022 preview

Central India's biggest chess touranment is making a return after 20 years. Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Trophy GM tournament was organized for the first time in 2002 which was won by GM Krishnan Sasikiran. The tournament is slated to take place from 19th to 28th September 2022. The total prize fund of the touranment is ₹3500000, ₹2300000 in Masters and ₹1200000 in Challengers section. Georgia no.1 GM Levan Pantsulaia who won consecutive tournaments in 2019, is slated to be the top seed of the event. GM Shyam Sundar M will be the highest rated Indian player in the field. Last date of entry is 12th September 2022. So hurry up and register now if you have not yet.
