Prague Open 2023 R5: Stavroula Tsolakidou emerges sole leader 5/5

FM Sharan Rao drew against IM Jakub Kosakowski (POL) in the fifth round of Karel Janeček Open at 5th Prague International Chess Festival 2023. Sharan had a promising position against the Pole. However, it was not easy to figure out how to maximize his chances in less time. Thus, he decided to repeat moves and move his score to 4.5/5. Greece no.1 woman, IM Stavroula Tsolakidou has emerged sole leader. She defeated Radoslaw Psyk (POL) convincingly to maintain her perfect score 5/5. Tech Mahindra GCL Day 5: Vintage Vishy strikes Aronian, Ganges Grandmasters score a gargantuan win

Vishy Anand continues to lead by example. Once again he won the battle of the 'Icons' against Levon Aronian (TCK). While his three points was confirmed, his teammates Leinier Dominguez Perez, Yifan Hou and Bella Khotenashvili scored emphatic wins to ensure their team score the biggest victory of the event in terms of game points 14-2. Balan Alaskan Knights overcame their 3-15 loss as they beat the top team SG Alpine Warriors 3-0 (10-9) by a minimum margin. Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Zhongyi Tan and Nino Batsiashvili's wins rendered R Praggnanandhaa and Magnus Carlsen's individual triumphs ineffective as they only added game points, while BAK won the match. Vijay Shreeram P clinches 2nd SSS Rating Open 2023

Vijay Shreeram P scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win 2nd SSS Rating Open 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. Five players - Selvamurugun B, Saravanan, Arul Prakash N, Sa Kannan and CM Mrithyunjay Mahadevan scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed second to sixth respectively. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹400000. Top three prizes were ₹25001, ₹15000 and ₹12500 each respectively. The tournament was held between 29th May and 2nd June 2023 at Chendhuran College of Engineering and Technology, Pudukottai, Tamil Nadu. It was organized by Sri Sai Saravanaa Academy. FM Sharan Rao defeated his fellow compatriot IM Ameya Audi to maintain his lead 4/4. He is the sole Indian and one of the seven players at a perfect score in the Karel Janeček Open, part of the 5th Prague International Chess Festival 2023. In the Masters, Pentala Harikrishna drew his fifth consecutive game against the Czech Republic no.1, David Navara. Ray Robson (USA) defeated Hao Wang (CHN) to join the lead with Vincent Keymer (GER) and Bogdan-Daniel Deac (ROU) at 3/5 each. Harikrishna, Navara, Sam Shankland (USA) and Haik Martirosyan (ARM) are in pursuit at 2.5/5 each. Today is a rest day for the Masters and Challengers section. One Berlin fell, the other one didn't. Magnus Carlsen's Berlin did not hold up against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave. However, D Gukesh's Berlin proved to be strong enough to hold Alexander Grischuk to a draw. It was R Praggnanandhaa's win against Javokhir Sindarov helped SG Alpine Warriors beat upGrad Mumba Masters. It was a win by a minimum margin 0-3 (7-8). Before that, upGrad Mumba Masters handed Ganges Grandmasters their first defeat of the event. Despite, MVL losing to Vishy Anand, Grischuk and Harika Dronavalli's key victories ensured the fall of GG's. Vietnam dominates ASEAN+ Age-Groups Standard Chess Championships 2023

The first competitions - Standard Chess (Individual and Teams) - saw Vietnam taking a massive 30 Golds, 14 Silvers and 19 Bronze, with second placed Philippines far behind with just 5 Gold and 12 Silver! No less than 10 countries medalled, in third place Myanmar, then followed by New Zealand, hosts Thailand, India, Indonesia, China, Malaysia, and Singapore. In Individual competition, most eyes were on the U-20 competition which gave a GM norm together with the direct IM title and in the Open, IMs Daniel Quizon and Michael Concio Jr. of the Philippines took Gold and Silver ahead of Vietnam’s Duc Tri Ngo, Malaysia’s Jun Ying Tan and Thailand’s Pin Laohawirapap, all who shared Bronze. Bogdan-Daniel Deac (ROU) defeated Ray Robson (USA) to join the lead with Vincent Keymer (GER) 2.5/4 at 5th Prague International Chess Festival 2023 Masters. Deac capitalized on his opportunity when his opponent made a positional mistake, allowing his queen to intrude on Black's kingside easily. Keymer had a 100-move marathon draw against the Czech Republic no.1, David Navara. Pentala Harikrishna had another hard-fought draw against the legendary, Boris Gelfand (ISR). Tech Mahindra GCL Day 3: Ganges Grandmasters remain invincible, Triveni Continental Kings climb up

Ganges Grandmasters maintain their sole lead by beating Balan Alaskan Knights 3-0 (11-6). Apart from being undefeated, they are the only team which has only two members suffering a loss each. Leinier Dominguez Perez's win over Teimour Radjabov certainly set the tone for the team. Bella Khotenashvili and Andrey Esipenko ensured the team gets some more valuable game points. Triveni Continental Kings started the day by losing their match against SG Alpine Warriors 0-3 (7-8). However, they bounced back by finishing the day with a victory over Balan Alaskan Knights. Both TCK and SGAW have the same match points 9 currently, the former having one more match played than the latter. Oleg Korneev wins 2nd Laimer Pfingst Open 2023, Souhardo second and ShyamSundar third

GM Oleg Korneev, IM Souhardo Basak and GM ShyamSundar M scored 7/9 each at 2nd Laimer Pfingst Open A (>1800) 2023. Korneev won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Souhardo was placed adjuged second and ShyamSundar third. All three of them remained undefeated. Korneev drew with Souhardo in the fifth round and Souhardo shared the point against ShyamSundar in the following. The top three prizes were €1500, €1000 and €600 each respectively. Prague Challengers 2023 R2-3: Akash misses a win against Motylev

Pentala Harikrishna drew his third game in-a-row at 5th Prague International Chess Festival 2023 Masters. He had a hard fought draw against the tournament leader, Germany no.1 Vincent Keymer. Ray Robson (USA) scored the sole victory of the round in the Masters section. He played sublime chess in his first-ever rated game encounter against the legendary Boris Gelfand (ISR). Robson and Keymer are currently in the lead 2/3, followed by six players at 1.5/3 including Harikrishna. In the Challengers section, Akash G missed a golden opportunity to win against Alexander Motylev (ROU). Akash had a decisive advantage for the better part of the game. Tech Mahindra GCL Day 2: SG Alpine Warriors succumb to the sole leader Ganges Grandmasters

The highly anticipated match of the day was between SG Alpine Warriors and Ganges Grandmasters. The sole reason could be deduced as the battle between Magnus Carlsen and Vishy Anand. We got a glimpse of the Carlsen we are familiar with, one tiny positional inaccuracy and he will punish you for that. However, that win did not turn out enough for the team as Richard Rapport and Bella Khotenashvili scored important victories over D Gukesh and Elisabeth Paehtz which meant SG Alpine Warriors losing to Ganges Grandmasters 0-3 (6-11). Balan Alaskan Knights bounced back after their loss against SGAW by defeating upGrad Mumba Masters 0-3 (5-14) by a huge margin. Sivakasi Chess Club, a strong outfit from the southern part of Tamil Nadu celebrates its 50th year of inception by organising three strong tournaments in the month of July. Sivakasi, well known for the fireworks, match works and printing industries, has a flurry of chess activities regularly. The itinerary for the month of July is a rapid rating tournament with a prize money of ₹150000 on 1st and 2nd July, a unique state level Chess Doubles tournament on 2nd July and a FIDE rated open tournament for a prize money of ₹10 lacs from 21st to 25th July. Srihari L clinches Visalakshi Arunachalam 7th SCS Rating Open 2023 with a perfect 8/8

Top seed Srihari L scored a perfect 8/8 to win Visalakshi Arunachalam 7th SCS Rating Open 2023. He finished a full point ahead of the field. Thus, tie-breaks were not required. Six players - Selvamurugan B, Umashankar A, Aakash G, Nandish V S, Sa Kannan and Vignesh Kannan P scored 7/8 each. They were placed second to seventh respectively according to tie-breaks. Srihari defeated his sole pursuer Mithun Anand V 6.5/7 in the final round to become a clear champion. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹500000. Tech Mahindra GCL Day 1: Vishy Anand ensures a smooth sailing for Ganges Grandmasters

The last time Vishy Anand played a rated tournament game was on 9th October 2022 at European Club Cup. After eight months and 13 days, the maestro did not show any rust on the board. In fact, he felt very optimistic about his position when he played 34.Qg1! against Jan-Krzysztof Duda. He felt that his queen and rook were flooding towards the kingside. The other former world champion in his team, Yifan Hou scored the second decisive game of the match against Alexandra Kosteniuk. Thus, Chingari Gulf Titans lost to Ganges Grandmasters 0-3 (4-10) without conceding a single match.
