Tech Mahindra GCL Day 9: Aronian astounds Carlsen and Nepo, Triveni Continental Kings jump to third place

Levon Aronian has beaten Jan-Krzysztof Duda, Magnus Carlsen and Ian Nepomniachtchi in three consecutive must-win situations. Today he defeated Carlsen and Nepo in consecutive games. While, the World no.1 allowed the two-time World Cup winner to score a quick 27-move victory. Against, Nepo he had to grind in the endgame and wait till the former world championship contender blundered. Triveni Continental Kings has now tied Ganges Grandmasters with the same score 15/27. SG Alpine Warriors also has the same match points. However, they still have two matches left. In a day full of events, upGrad Mumba Masters defeated GG 3-0 (10-4) without incurring a single game loss. Rupesh Kumar Mishra wins Chess for Everyone Rating Open 2023 in Baikunthpur, Chhattisgarh

Rupesh Kumar Mishra scored 8/9 to win Chess for Everyone All India Rating Open 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. Four players - Jain Shrenhik Daklia, Saurabh Kumar, Kamad Mishra and Jion Ghosh scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed second to fifth respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹50000. Top three prizes were ₹11000, ₹7000 and ₹5000 along with a trophy each respectively. The tournament was held from 3rd to 7th June 2023 at SECL Baikunthpur Auditorium Gautam Sadn in Baikunthpur, Chhattisgarh. It was organized by Korea District Chess Association. GM Leon Luke Mendonca had a well contested draw against GM Aryan Chopra in the sixth round of Sparkassen Chess Trophy Open A, part of 50th International Dortmund Chess Days. In an All-German battle, GM Alexander Donchenko defeated GM Matthias Bluebaum to gain sole lead 5.5/6. Six players including Aryan, Leon and GM Harshit Raja are in pursuit at 5/6 each. GM Karthik Venkataraman defeated WGM Jana Schneider (GER) to reduce the gap 4/6 with the leaders IM Ruben Gideon Kollner and WGM Dinara Wagner 4.5/6 each. Will Harikrishna win Prague Masters for the second year in-a-row?

Pentala Harikrishna scored a crucial win in the penultimate round of 5th Prague International Chess Festival 2023 Masters. He defeated Hao Wang for the first time in nearly six years in a rated game. The China no.3 went wrong in the endgame, Harikrishna being an expert in that phase, had no trouble seizing his opportunity and scoring his first win of the event. He is now just a half point behind the leaders Bogdan-Daniel Deac (ROU) and Ray Robson (USA) at 5/8 each. The Romanian defeated Thai Dai Van Nguyen to join the lead with Robson. In the Karel Janeček Open, GM Deep Sengupta won against IM Mai Narva (EST) to join the lead with GM Tomas Polak (CZE) and IM Jakub Fus (POL). Tech Mahindra GCL Day 8: Ganges Grandmasters and Triveni Continental Kings win close battles

One might expect a relatively quiet day after an exciting finish yesterday. Well, that just does not happen at Tech Mahindra Global Chess League. In the first match, five out of six games ended decisively. Levon Aronian, Wei Yi and Sara Khadem scored the crucial victories for their team Triveni Continental Kings. Their 3-0 (10-9) victory over Chingari Gulf Titans ensured the team still has mathematical chances. Andrey Esipenko scored the crucial win for his team, Ganges Grandmasters. Thus, GG are once again is back at the top for now with a score 15/24. Tomorrow will be the penultimate day of the double round-robin stage. GM Leon Luke Mendonca defeated fellow compatriot GM Pranav Anand in the fifth round of Sparkassen Chess Trophy of 50th International Dortmund Chess Days. Pranav erred in a complex rook and same color bishop endgame. GM Aryan Chopra had a quick 16-move draw against GM Alexander Donchenko (GER). Aryan, Donchenko and Leon are currently at 4.5/5 each. Aryan will face Leon in Round 6. GM Karthik Venkataraman drew against WGM Dinara Wagner (GER) to move his score 3/5. Mr. Dortmund Vladimir Kramnik bounced back by winning against Fabiano Caruana. Ray Robson (USA) defeated one of the coleaders, Vincent Keymer (GER) to emerge sole leader at the Prague Masters 2023. Pentala Harikrishna had another hard-fought draw against Sam Shankland (USA) to move to 3.5/7. He is now a full point behind the leader along with five more players. The other previous round leader, Bogdan-Daniel Deac (ROU) drew against Hao Wang (CHN) to move to 4/7. GM Deep Sengupta continues to stay in the championship hunt as he won a positional skirmish against IM Hilmir Freyr Heimission (ISL). Vishy Anand vs Magnus Carlsen games are always the highly anticipated encounter of the day, no matter what the event or the stage is. The rematch between two of the greatest was arguably the game of the tournament so far. It is definitely one for the books. The endgame seemed to be heading towards a draw when the world no.1 went for a break. It actually allowed Anand to salvage a draw. However, time trouble induced a human error, turning things once again towards the Norwegian's favor. After an exchange of smile, avoidance of stalemate trap and underpromotion later, Carlsen defeated Anand in a stellar game. His and Praggnanandhaa's win ensured SG Alpine Warriors knocking off Ganges Grandmasters from the top of the leaderboard. Kandi Santosh Sai Karthik scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win 1st Telangana Gurukulams All India Below 1600 Rating Tournament 2023. The 12-year-old finished a half point ahead of the field. Five players - Rohith N, Sree Shaunak Chanda, Phani Krishna C H, Sree Rama Anjani Kumar K and Surya Alakanti scored 8/9 each. They were placed second to sixth respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹499999. Top three prizes were ₹50000, ₹30000 and ₹15000 along with a trophy each respectively. The tournament was held from 2nd to 4th June 2023 at Sri Kotla Vijaya Bhaskar Reddy Stadium in Hyderabad, Telangana. GM Leon Luke Mendonca held Germany no.2 GM Matthias Bluebaum to a draw in the fourth round of Sparkassen Chess Trophy 2023 Open, part of 50th International Dortmund Chess Days. The teenager made a nice positional exchange sacrifice. The continuation to capitalize on his advantage was quite complex for human to find. Naturally, Leon did not play it and the game ended in a draw. GM Aryan Chopra defeated IM Arthur Guo (USA) after a 5.5 hour long battle to maintain his lead with GM Alexander Donchenko (GER) at 4/4 each. They will inevitably face each other in the fifth round. Vishy Anand has defeated Jan-Krzysztof Duda twice in five days. The legend continues to make it look easy. The Poland no.1 sacrificed an exchange and things did not work out for him. Anand's win did not help the team as he scored the sole victory for Ganges Grandmasters. Yifan Hou had a great chance to win against Alexandra Kosteniuk. Unfortunately for her, she couldn't find a way in time trouble. Harika Dronavalli and Jonas Buhl Bjerre scored crucial victory for upGrad Mumba Masters to beat Triveni Continetal Kings. The historic 50th International Dortmund Chess Days is having four tournaments in which a combined total of 568 players are taking part. 326 in Sparkassen Chess Trophy Open A, 228 in Open B, ten in Sportland NRW Cup and four in NC World Masters 2023 from a total of 43 countries across the world. GM Aryan Chopra and GM Leon Luke Mendonca are in an eight-pack lead with GM Matthias Bluebaum (GER), GM Alexander Donchenko (GER), GM Michael Adams (ENG), GM Frederik Svane (GER), GM Ori Kobo (ISR) and IM Arthur Guo (USA) with a perfect 3/3. It was only a question of how big Vietnam would win, and the final tally of 92 Gold, 37 Silver, and 49 Bronze said it! When second placed Philippines had “only” 15 Gold, 38 Silver and 8 Bronze, followed by India with 3 Gold, 3 Silver and 3 Bronze, the extent of their domination becomes even more clear. New Zealand was a surprise fourth on the basis of medals won in the seniors event, Myanmar fifth, and then Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, China and Malaysia with medals.
