Prague Open 2023 R5: Stavroula Tsolakidou emerges sole leader 5/5

by Shahid Ahmed - 27/06/2023

FM Sharan Rao drew against IM Jakub Kosakowski (POL) in the fifth round of Karel Janeček Open at 5th Prague International Chess Festival 2023. Sharan had a promising position against the Pole. However, it was not easy to figure out how to maximize his chances in less time. Thus, he decided to repeat moves and move his score to 4.5/5. Greece no.1 woman, IM Stavroula Tsolakidou has emerged sole leader. She defeated Radoslaw Psyk (POL) convincingly to maintain her perfect score 5/5. Round 6 Masters, Challengers and Open starts today at 3 p.m. local time, 6:30 p.m. IST. Photo: Petr Vrabec/Prague International Chess Festival

Sharan Rao in pursuit

After Sharan, GM Mitrabha Guha, GM Deep Sengupta and IM Ameya Audi are the three Indians at 4/5 each. Mitrabha was winning the better part of the game against FM Aron Pasti (HUN). However, he missed his win in the final moments of the endgame, allowing his opponent to salvage a draw.

Jakub - Sharan: 0.5-0.5

Earlier this year, FM Sharan Rao (2248) faced IM Jakub Kosakowski (POL, 2485) at 39th Capelle la Grande Open. The Pole won that game. This time the colors got reversed.

Position after 33.Qf4

The above position certainly looks quite complex and volatile. Computer recommends an interesting line 33...Be4 34.Ng7 Nf6 35.Rh6 Qc2. The game continued 33...Nh6 34.Bf6 Rg8 35.Bg5 Nf7 36.Bh4 Nh6 and the game ended in a draw by repetition. The machine suggests 35...Nxg4 36.Qxg4 Qb3 37.Rac1 Be4 it is quite difficult for a human to play like this.

Stavroula - Psyk

Position after 28...Qd7

IM Stavroula Tsolakidou (GRE, 2373) had a positional advantage for quite some time against Radoslaw Psyk (POL, 2417). It was time for a breakthrough 29.gxf5 Bxf5 30.Bxf5 Nxf5 31.Nxf5 Qxf5 32.Rxg6 and White won the game in another dozen more moves.
