Max Warmerdam dominates Dutch Open 2023, Prraneeth Vuppala second, Sidhant Mohapatra third

GM Max Warmerdam scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win Dutch Open 2023. He finished a staggering one and a half point ahead of the field. GM Prraneeth Vuppala scored sole 6.5/9 to finish second. Six players scored 6/9. IM Sidhant Mohapatra and GM Sankalp Gupta were the only two Indians among them. Sidhant was placed third and Sankalp sixth. The champion Warmerdam, won against both remaining podium finishers Prraneeth and Sidhant. Prraneeth drew against Sidhant in the fourth round and defeated Sankalp in the sixth. The top three prizes were €2500, €1750 and €1000 each respectively. Photos: Schaakbond

Sethuraman convincingly clinches 60th National Championship 2023

GM Sethuraman S P (PSPB) drew against GM Mitrabha Guha (WB) to become 60th National Chess 2023 Champion. This is his second National title since 2014. He finished a half point ahead of the competition 9.5/11. GM Vishnu Prasanna V (TN) defeated GM Abhimanyu Puranik (AAI) to secure sole second place 9/11. Seven players scored 8.5/11. Out of them, IM Aronyak Ghosh (RSPB) secured third place. He drew against GM Abhijeet Gupta (PSPB) to make a podium finish. The only other IM to make a top ten finish is, IM Neelash Saha (RSPB). FIDE World Rapid Team 2023 R1-4: Aravindh and Nihal shine

India's first triple crown champion, GM Aravindh Chithambaram (Six-pack) had the best start among Indians. He defeated GM Wesley So (WR Chess) and GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (ASV AlphaEchecs Linz) in Round 2 and 4 respectively. In both games, Aravindh played some sharp chess, the latter win being his best so far at FIDE World Rapid Team Championship 2023. GM Nihal Sarin (MGD1) also had a great day as he defeated GM Levon Aronian (Kompetenzakademie Allstars) and drew against GM Daniil Dubov (Freedom). GM Raunak Sadhwani (MGD1) won against GM Richard Rapport (Freedom) which featured four pawn promotions into a queen. Among the Women, WGM Priyanka Nutakki (Six-pack) held GM Alexandra Kosteniuk (WR Chess) to a draw. She was on the verge of holding GM Kateryna Lagno (ASV AlphaEchecs Linz) until she blundered at the last moment. He is an IAS officer and is the current Director of School Education in Meghalaya. Meet Swapnil Tembe, who found chess to be an ideal tool to inculcate in school kids the virtues of concentration, patience, analytical thinking, and decision-making. This is the reason why he decided to build a chess arena in a park in Tura, West Garo Hills. Sagar Shah had an interview with Swapnil. Vladimir Fedoseev wins 29th Abu Dhabi Masters 2023, Aravindh Chithambaram third

The top three boards ended in draws in the final round of 29th Abu Dhabi Masters 2023. Both GM Vladimir Fedoseev (SLO) and GM Xiangyu Xu (CHN) scored 7/9 each. Fedoseev won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Xiangyu was placed second. Eight players including GM Aravindh Chithambaram and GM S L Narayanan scored 6.5/9 each. Aravindh was placed and Narayanan ninth. Total prize fund was US$ 41600. The top three prizes were US$ 15000 + trophy, $10000 and $6000 each respectively. The inaugural edition of FIDE World Rapid Team Championship is starting today in Dusseldorf, Germany. A total of 19 Indians are going to take part, third after Germany 115 and Ukraine 22. Vishy Anand, Vidit Gujrathi, Arjun Erigaisi, Nihal Sarin, R Praggnanandhaa, Pentala Harikrishna, D Gukesh, Raunak Sadhwani, Aravindh Chithambaram, Srinath Narayanan, Harika Dronavalli, Pranesh M, Aditya Mittal, Karthik Venkataraman, Nubairshah Shaikh, Priyanka Nutakki, Dinesh Rajan M, Peter Anand and Vibhor Sharma will representing their respective teams. A total of 295 players in 37 teams are slated to take part. The total prize fund is €250000. The top three prizes are €100000, 60000 and 40000 each respectively. GM Sethuraman S P (PSPB) defeated IM Neelash Saha (RSPB) to increase his lead by a full point 9/10. He needs a draw in the final round to win 60th National Chess Championship 2023 and secure a spot in the next FIDE World Cup. He is playing fantastic in this event, carrying all the momentum from Uralsk Open 2023. IM Aronyak Ghosh (RSPB) and GM Vignesh N R (RSPB) drew against GM Diptayan Ghosh (WB) and GM Vishnu Prasanna (TN) respectively. GM Abhijeet Gupta (PSPB), GM Abhimanyu Puranik (AAI) and GM Mitrabha Guha (WB) registered victories to move to 8/10. A total of seven players are full point behind the leader. 60th National Championship 2023 R9: Sethuraman inches closer to a triumph

GM Sethuraman S P (PSPB) drew his game against IM Aronyak Ghosh (RSPB) in Round 9 of 60th National Chess Championship 2023. Five players are in pursuit at 7.5/9 each. They are - Aronyak, GM Vignesh N R (RSPB), GM Vishnu Prasanna (TN), GM Diptayan Ghosh (WB) and IM Neelash Saha (RSPB). Vignesh brought an end to Iniyan's winning streak. Vishnu handed 12-year-old Vedant Garg (CHD) his first loss of the event. Top seed GM Abhijeet Gupta (PSPB) won against CM Soham Kamotra (J&K) after nine continuous moves of capturing pieces. Magnus Carlsen clinches FIDE World Cup 2023, Praggnanandhaa second and Caruana third

Magnus Carlsen was taken aback in the first game by Praggnanandhaa's choice of variation in the Italian Opening. However, two impulsive decisions cost the teenager the first game. According to the world no.1, experience prevailed today. In the second rapid game, the world no.1 opted for the Alapin variation in the Sicilian. There was not much to fight for. Thus the game ended in a draw and Carlsen won the FIDE World Cup 2023, for the very first time in his career. Fabiano Caruana completely crushed Nijat Abasov in both tie-break games to finish third. Praggnanandhaa, Caruana and Abasov - all three have qualified in the Candidates as Carlsen made his intentions known of not playing Candidates if the format remains unchanged. Vignesh N R wins 11th Pontevedra Masters 2023, Sarayu Velpula scores IM, WGM and WIM-norm, finishes second

GM Vignesh N R scored an unbeaten 7/9 to win 11th Cidade de Pontevedra Masters 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the field. Starting out as the last seed, Sarayu Velpula completely astonished everyone with her splendid performance. She scored 6.5/9, secured second place and earned her maiden IM, WGM and WIM-norm. It is difficult to recall when was the last an Indian earned three norms at a single event. Seven more players also scored the same points 6.5/9. Out of them, GM Visakh N R is the only other Indian to make a top ten finish. He was placed fifth according to tie-breaks. The top three prizes were €2000, €1200 and €800 along with a trophy each. 29th Abu Dhabi Masters 2023 R8: Prraneeth Vuppala wins five in-a-row

GM Aravindh Chithambaram made a quick 16-move draw a gainst GM Vladimir Fedoseev (SLO) in the penultimate round of 29th Abu Dhabi Masters 2023. India's 82nd GM Prraneeth Vuppala scored his fifth win in-a-row. In the eighth round, he defeated GM Aryan Chopra who was having a fantastic event until now. Prraneeth seized his opportunity in the major piece endgame when his opponent made an inaccuracy. Later, he brought his king into the attack and scored a beautiful victory. Both Aravindh and Prraneeth are the only two Indians who are trailing the tournament leaders Fedoseev and GM Xiangyu Xu (CHN) by a half point at 6/8 each. GM Sethuraman S P (PSPB) defeated GM Visakh N R (RSPB) emphatically to maintain his sole lead 7.5/8. GM Iniyan P (TN) registered his second hat-trick of the event as he won against GM Abhimanyu Puranik (AAI). GM Diptayan Ghosh won the All-West Bengal clash against GM Mitrabha Guha. IM Aronyak Ghosh (RSPB) got the better of GM Deep Sengupta (PSPB) when the latter blundered in an equal endgame. IM Neelash Saha (RSPB) beat a Commonwealth Gold medalist for the second round in-a-row. Three out of the top five boards ended in 25 moves or less, all five of them were decisive. This certainly speaks volumes about the level of competitiveness among India's strong titled players. Sethuraman will be up against Aronyak in Round 9 which starts today at 3 p.m. IST. Praggnanandhaa and Magnus Carlsen will play tie-breaks to determine FIDE World Cup 2023 winner

Magnus Carlsen revealed he has food poisoning after the first game of the FIDE World Cup 2023 Finals. It resulted in Carlsen and R Praggnanandhaa having their quickest game of the World Cup so far. The world no.1 mentioned in the post game interview that he is doing better. FIDE and organizers have taken great care of him. The Four Knights' Game on the board gave the teenager an inkling that his opponent wants to go for a draw. However, he admitted that he is not good at playing for only a draw. We all know about his fighting spirit, something which is also known the Norwegian to have when he is feeling 100%. Fabiano Caruana (USA) won a must-win game against Nijat Abasov (AZE). Vrashank Chouhan (Udaipur), Harshvardhan Swami (Bikaner), Aayush Bhojak (Udaipur) and Aman Balana (Ganganagar) scored 7/8 each at Rajasthan State Junior Under-19 Rating 2023 in Open section. Former National Junior champion, Vrashank won the tournament on tie-breaks. Harshvardhan, Aayush and Aman were placed second to fourth respectively. In the Girls section, the defending State Junior Girls champion, Dakshita Kumawat (Udaipur) scored an unbeaten 7.5/8 to become the champion once again. She finished a staggering 1.5 points ahead of the field. Four girls - Nandini Purohit (Bhilwara), Kiyana Parihar (Udaipur), Aashi Upadhyay (Jaipur) and Naavya Rathi (Jodhpur) scored 6/8 each. They secured second to fifth place respectively. Total prize fund was ₹30000. The top three prizes were ₹7000, ₹5500 and ₹4500 along with a trophy each respectively.
