49th National Women 2023 R7: Bhakti Kulkarni gains sole lead

IM Bhakti Kulkarni (Goa) defeated IM Soumya Swaminathan (PSPB) to emerge sole leader 6.5/7 at 49th National Women Championship 2023. In a battle of former National Women champions, Bhakti made a beautiful staircase pawn break at the center of the board. She might not have correctly capitalized on her advantage. However, her opponent's erroneous play allowed her to regain control and win the game convincingly. WGM Mary Ann Gomes (PSPB) and WIM Mahalakshmi M (RSPB) won their respective games against WIM Mounika Akshaya Bommini (AP) and Rebecca Jesumarian (TN). Sham R wins 14th KIIT International Chess Festival B Below 1900 Rating Tournament 2023

Sham R, Gyana Sai Santhosh M and Bishal Basak scored 8.5/10 each at 14th KIIT International Chess Festival B Below 1900 Rating Tournament 2023. Sham won the tournament due to better tie-breaks. Gyana was placed second and Bishal third. Only Sham remained undefeated among the three. The total prize fund of the entire festival combining three events was ₹3200000, for Category B it was ₹600000. The top three prizes were ₹60000, ₹45000 and ₹35000 along with a trophy each respectively. The tournament was held from 11th to 14th June 2023 at KIIT Campus 9, Patia in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. 8th Johor International Chess Open 2023 begins

After winning Professsor Lim Kok Ann Open 2023 and finishing second on tie-breaks at Thailand Open 2023, GM Diptayan Ghosh is now the top seed at 8th Johor Open 2023. Peter Long who is playing after almost 13 years, writes from the tournament location, Johor Bahru, Malaysia. Peter's last event was 39th Chess Olympiad back in September 2009. The tournament has two sections - Masters and Amateurs. A total of 24 players including four GMs and eight IMs are taking part from seven countries across the world in the Masters section. The average rating is 2303. Total prize fund is RM 125000, RM 90000 in the Masters and RM 35000 in the Amateurs. The winner of the Masters will earn RM 22000 (approx. ₹389378). SuperUnited R&B 2023 Day 1: Vishy Anand emerges early sole leader

Vishy Anand continues his great form from Tech Mahindra Global Chess League. He scored an impressive 5/6 on the first day of Grand Chess Tour SuperUnited Rapid and Blitz 2023. After starting with a solid draw against Alireza Firouzja (FRA), the maestro defeated the Romanian players - Richard Rapport and Constantin Lupulescu. The legend is now in sole lead. D Gukesh did not have the ideal start. He lost to Magnus Carlsen (NOR) and then recovered well by sharing points against Ian Nepomniachtchi and Firouzja. The defending champion IM Divya Deshmukh (MAH) had already shown chinks in her armour. She blundered a piece early in the middlegame against IM Soumya Swaminathan (PSPB). The former National Women champion does not let these opportunities slip by. IM Bhakti Kulkarni (Goa) also scored a win similarly. Her opponent, WGM Srija Seshadri (TN) dropped a piece for no reason and succumbed easily. Soumya and Bhakti will invitably face each other in Round 7. Six players - WIM Mahalakshmi M (RSPB), WIM Mounika Akshaya Bommini (AP), WGM Varshini V (TN), WGM Mary Ann Gomes (PSPB), WIM Mrudul Dehankar (MAH) and Rebecca Jesumarian (TN) are at 5/6 each. FIDE World Cup 2023: Players lists and pairings announced

A total of 17 Indians, five more than previous edition, are set to take part in the upcoming FIDE World Cup and FIDE Women's World Cup 2023. First game of the first round is on 30th July. Five Indians in the Open and three among Women got a Bye in the first round due to being in the top 50 and 25 seeds. The remaining five in the Open and four among Women have to play their first round matches. The players are - D Gukesh, Vidit Gujrathi, Arjun Erigaisi, R Praggnanandhaa, Nihal Sarin, S L Narayanan, Abhimanyu Puranik, Adhiban B, Karthik Venkataraman, Harsha Bharathakoti, GM Koneru Humpy, GM Harika Dronavalli, IM Vaishali R, IM Divya Deshmukh, WGM Nandhidhaa P V, WGM Mary Ann Gomesh and WGM Priyanka Nutakki. Wenjun Ju starts her Women's World Championship defense against Tingjie Lei starting today

The FIDE Women's World Championship Match 2023 starts today in Shanghai, China from 3 p.m. local time, 12:30 p.m. IST. The reigning Women's World Championn, Wenjun is set to defend her world title for the third time in her career. The Challenger Tingjie Lei won the Women's Candidates against the former Women's World Champion, Zhongyi Tan. At the draw of lots, Tingjie got the white pieces in Game 1. With Ding Liren becoming the new world champion few months ago, one thing is for sure, China is going to have a world champion in both Open and Women for at least another year. The total prize fund is €500000, winner will earn €300000 and the runner-up will receive €200000. Who do you think will win the match? 49th National Women 2023 R5: Seven in the lead

WGM Srija Seshadri (TN) held the top seed and defending champion IM Divya Deshmukh (MAH) to a draw. After two long victories, Divya gained an exchange against Srija in the fifth round. However, she was unable to convert her advantage into a full point. Srija found a combination which forced a perpetual check. Thus a draw was agreed. The other two leaders of the round, WIM Mounika Akshaya Bommini (AP) and WIM Mahalakshmi M (RSPB) had a well contested draw. Sharan Rao wins LJ Slovakia Below 2300 Rating Tournament 2023, Jeet Jain second

FMs - Sharan Rao, Jeet Jain and Martin Zvarik (SVK) scored 6.5/8 each at LJ Slovakia Open Below 2300 Rating Tournament 2023. Sharan became champion due to better tie-breaks. Jeet and Zvarik were placed second and third. Only Sharan suffered one loss out of the top three. His sole defeat was against the eventual runner-up, Jeet. The total prize fund of the tournament was €4300. The top three prizes were €700, €500 and €400 each respectively. This is Sharan's second triumph of the year. He became Karnataka State Rapid 2023 champion on 30th April. After his triumph in Slovakia, Sharan went on to score his final IM-norm at Karel Janeček Open, 5th Prague International Chess Festival 2023.

49th National Women 2023 R4: Mounika Akshaya mauls Padmini Rout

The defending champion, IM Divya Deshmukh (MAH) did not have it easy to register her fourth win at 49th National Women 2023. The Asian Continental 2023 Women Gold medalist had to battle for 101 moves against WIM Arpita Mukherjee (WB) in a queen and minor piece endgame. Arpita played the difficult endgame quite well until she pushed her passed pawn and made it weak. Divya pounced on that opportunity and converted it into a win with ease. On the second board, WIM Mounika Akshaya (AP) correctly punished the four-time National Women champion, IM Padmini Rout (PSPB) for her mistakes in the middlegame. WGM Varshini V (WGM) made a solid draw against IM Bhakti Kulkarni (Goa). Luka Paichadze wins 14th KIIT Open A 2023, Mehar Chinna Reddy third

Five players - GM Luka Paichadze (GEO), GM Alexei Fedorov, IM Mehar Chinna Reddy C H, IM Milosz Szpar (POL) and GM Aleksej Aleksandrov scored 8/10 each at 14th KIIT International Chess Festival Open A 2023. Luka won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Alexei was placed second and Mehar third. Top four finishers remained undefeated. The total prize fund of the entire festival combining three events was ₹3200000, for Open A it was ₹2000000. The top three prizes were ₹300000, ₹200000 and ₹150000 along with a trophy each respectively. GM Laxman R R is the only other Indian to make a top ten finish. He scored 7.5/10 to secure eighth place. The tournament was held from 11th to 18th June 2023 at Viswanathan Anand International Chess Hall, KIIT University in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. Sportland NRW Cup 2023: Karthik Venkataraman second, Sparkassen Open: Leon Luke Mendonca third

Fabiano Caruana (USA) defeated Pavel Eljanov (UKR) in the final round to win NC World Masters 2023. WGM Dinara Wagner (GER) drew against IM Ruben Gideon Köllner (GER) to become the champion in Sportland NRW Cup and earn her second GM-norm. GM Karthik Venkataraman scored 6.5/9 to finish second. Germany no.3 GM Alexander Donchenko defeated GM Ori Kobo (ISR) in a 96-move long battle to win Sparkassen Chess Open A on tie-breaks. The sole leader GM Frederik Svane (GER) drew against IM Gleb Dudin to finish second. GM Leon Luke Mendonca finished with a score 7/9 to be placed third. GM Pranav Anand also made 7/9. He was placed seventh. GM Aryan Chopra and IM Rathanvel V S are the only two other Indians to make a top ten finish. They scored 6.5/9 each to secure eighth and tenth place respectively. Top seed IM Divya Deshmukh averted disaster against Mrittika Mallick (WB) in the third round of 49th National Women 2023. The reigning National Under-17 Girls champion correctly launched an attack when the opportunity was presented. However, she was unable to follow through. Thus, the defending two-time National Women and reigning Asian Women 2023 Gold medalist managed to escape with a win. WFM Sai Nirupama Kotepalli (AP), WCM Bristy Mukherjee (WB) and Sarayu Velpula (TEL) held IM Eesha Karavade (PSPB), IM Soumya Swaminathan (PSPB) and WIM Sakshi Chitlange (MAH) to a solid draw each respectively. Jonas Buhl Bjerre wins a thriller for Triveni Continental Kings to clinch Tech Mahindra Global Chess League

The recently turned 19-year-old Danish GM Jonas Buhl Bjerre is the hero of the Tech Mahindra Global Chess League 2023 Finals. After three draws in the sudden death matches, he checkmated Javokhir Sindarov (uMM) to etch Triveni Continental Kings as the winner of the inaugural edition. Before this game, Jonas had lost four times against Sindarov today. It was not that he was playing bad. Even in the qualifier stage, he had many great positions but he just could not convert it. What's important is, the teenager won when it mattered the most. IM Sara Khadem (TCK) had to be applauded as well. She defended an inferior position against GM Harika Dronavalli (uMM) in the first sudden death game.
