Kaustuv Kundu dominates Shri Dhanpat Rai Sachdeva Memorial Rating Open 2025
IM Kaustuv Kundu scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win Shri Dhanpat Rai Sachdeva Memorial Rating Open 2025. Kaustuv finished a half point ahead of the competition. Ashirwad Swain scored sole 8/9 to secure second place. Ramanuj Mishra, CM Vyom Malhotra and Rohith Yadav B R scored 7.5/9. They secured third, fourth and fifth place according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund was ₹1300000. The top three prizes were ₹100000, ₹70000 and ₹40000 along with a trophy each. The five-day nine round Rating Open tournament was organized by Rai Sahab Council for Sports and Education at Hotel Opulent by Udman in New Delhi from 24th to 31st August 2025. IM Kaustuv Kundu was the sole leader 7.5/8, heading into the last round. Four players - Ashirwad Swain, Mrityunjay Kumar, Piyush Kumar and Himanshu Ranjan were trailing by a half point at 7/8 each. Himanshu lost to Kaustuv and he became a clear champion. Ashirwad defeated Mrityunjay to finish second. Kishan Kumar succumbed to Ramanuj Mishra and the latter claimed third place. WCM Sanskruti Wankhade was the sole female player to make a top ten finish. She scored 7/9 to clinch seventh place.

IM Kaustuv Kundu (2386) made an interesting decision to sacrifice an exchange 20...Rfc8!? 21.Bxc5 Qxc5 22.Qxc5 Rxc5 23.fxg6 hxg6 24.Rb2 Bc6 25.Rb4? Ra5 26.Rb2 Na4 27.Rbc2 Bxe4-+ and Black went on to use his minor pieces beautifully to win the game.
A total of 381 players including three IMs took part from all over the country, one from Canada, and two from the USA. The five-day nine round Rating Open tournament was organized by Rai Sahab Council for Sports and Education at Hotel Opulent by Udman in New Delhi from 24th to 31st August 2025. The time control of the event was 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment per move.
