31st Abu Dhabi Masters R6: Bharath Subramaniyam and Aditya Mittal in the fray

GM Chongsheng Zeng (CHN) drew his game against fellow compatriot GM Haowen Xue (CHN) in Round 6 of 31st Abu Dhabi Chess Festival 2025 Masters. The quick 17-move draw resulted in Chongsheng maintaining his sole lead 5.5/6. GM Aditya Mittal and GM Bharath Subramaniyam H defeated GM Iniyan Pa and GM Prraneeth Vuppala to move to 5/6 each. They are the only two Indians among half a dozen pursuers. IM Mayank Chakraborty and IM Anuj Shrivatri defeated GM Adham Fawzy (EGY) and GM Brewington Hardaway (USA) respectively. GM Aditya Mittal (2560) made a well-timed break 22.e4! dxe4 23.fxe4 Bxe4 23.h4 f5 24.Bh5 Rf8 25.hxg5 hxg5 26.Qxg5+ Rg7 27.Qh4 Nc6 28.Bd6 Nxd4 29.Bxf8 and White went on to win the game comfortably against GM Iniyan Pa (2586).

The f3-pawn is about to fall. White cannot defend it. How should White go about it? GM Adham Fawzy (EGY, 2502) blundered 40.Rc3?? Rf3-+ now White cannot play 41.Kh2 as Nf1+ drops the rook. 41.Kg1 Kg7 42.Bc4 Rxh3 and IM Mayank Chakraborty (2452) went on to convert his advantage into a win.

IM Anuj Shrivatri (2452) and GM Brewington Hardaway (USA, 2499) had an exciting finish in the rook and opposite color bishop endgame. Anuj allowed his opponent to get back in the game a couple of times. The final opportunity arose after 54.d5? Rb5 55.Rc7+ Ke8 56.Kf6 Rxd5 57.Ke6 now Rd8?? once again put Anuj in the control 58.h6+- and this time he did not let his advantage go. What should have Black done in the above position to save the game?

Position after 23...g4?

IM Goutham Krishna H's (2414) center break 23.d4 was responded by an attack on the wing 23...g4? It was evidently not the best choice. 24.hxg4 fxg4 25.Nh2 Nb6 26.Bf1 Rb8 27.d5 Bd7 28.e4 Nc8 29.Bxa6 and White went on to win the game comfortably.
