31st Abu Dhabi Masters R1: Rosh Jain stuns Sina Movahed
The 31st edition of Abu Dhabi Chess Festival 2025 Masters started with a lot of minor upsets in the first round. The biggest one was FM Rosh Jain defeating GM Sina Movahed (IRI). The teenager played courageously to beat the Grandmaster. FM Ajay Santhosh Parvathareddy held the top seed, GM Sanan Sjugirov (HUN) to a draw. In a battle of former Asian Junior champions, IM V S Raahul missed a win against GM Aleksey Grebnev. 28 GMs, 81 IMs, 3 WGMs and 2 WIMs are taking part. The average rating of the tournament is 2389. It certainly creates a huge opportunity for the norm seekers. The total prize fund in the Masters is US$ 55000. Top three prizes are - US$ 15000, $10000 and $6000 each. Lots of upsets
The first round witnessed a lot of Indians sharing the point with their GM opponents.
Raahul - Grebnev
In a battle of two former Asian Junior champions, IM V S Raahul (2378) got himself a substantial advantage against GM Aleksey Grebnev (2595). In the above rook and minor piece endgame, White needed to support his knight 62.Re2 immediately. After 62.Rg2? Bd4+ 63.Kf7 Kc4 Black got enough time to bring his king into the fray and Rc2+ no longer forces the rook trade. The game eventually ended in a draw.
Sina - Rosh
FM Rosh Jain (2372) did what the position needed him to do 14...Nxb3! 15.Bxb6 Nxd2 16.Bd4 Nc4 Black got three minor pieces for GM Sina Movahed's (IRI, 2558) queen. 17.Qg4 g5 fearless play 18.hxg5 hxg5 and Black went on to win the game with courageous play.
