13th London Chess Classic 2023 R6: Gukesh beats McShane, Jules loses a winning game against Adams

by Shahid Ahmed - 08/12/2023

D Gukesh scored a fine victory against Luke McShane (ENG) in the sixth round of 13th London Chess Classic 2023. The England no.4 made an incorrect exchange in the endgame which turned things in Gukesh's favor. Jules Moussard (FRA) miscalculated in a winning position against the legend, Michael Adams (ENG). He found the resource and Jules ended up losing the game. English prodigy, IM Shreyas Royal managed to defend well and salvage a draw against GM Nikita Vitiugov, despite the former being worse for the better part of the game. Adams continues his sole lead 4.5/6, followed by Gukesh 4/6 and Tabatabaei 3.5/6. Round 7 starts today at 2 p.m. local time, 7:30 p.m. IST. Shreyas Royal salvages a draw against Nikita Vitiugov

14-year-old IM Shreyas Royal is making the most of his opportunity. He navigated a difficult queen and bishop endgame which was the major part of the game, showed his grit and eventually managed to secure a draw.

D Gukesh scored his third win of the event so far

Gukesh - McShane: 1-0

D Gukesh (2720) faced Luke McShane (ENG, 2631) for the first time in any form of rated game. The England no.4 blundered when he exchanged the knight.

Position after 36...Nxf4+

36...Nxf4+?? 37.exf4+- now the queen is an overworked piece as it defends both rook and the e6-pawn. 37...Qe8 is forced to keep both defended. 38.Rxd8 Bxd8 Black saves material momentarily. 39.Qd4 e5 40.Qd5+ Kh8 41.fxe5 and it's over.
