KIIT Festival: Grachev wins, Rathanvel third

The annual KIIT International Festival was held from 23 May to 29 May in the KIIT University campus in Bhubaneswar. The tournament had a time control of 90 minutes with 30 seconds increment from move one and a rating average of 2050 — good my Indian standards. Russians GM Boris Grachev and GM Ivan Popov took the first and second place, but the Indian surprise was V.S. Rathanvel (2315), who had the tournament of his life! An illustrated report.

We were the first ones to report on R. Praggnanandhaa becoming the youngest International Master in the world at the age of ten years and ten months. Subsequently this news has spread like wild fire with many national and international newspapers and websites covering this amazing achievement. However, there have hardly been any pictures of little Praggu at the event, leave alone video footage. In this article we bring you an exclusive interview taken by Rupali Mullick minutes after Praggnanandhaa won his ninth round game and achieved his feat! And yes, you read it right! The little boy's aim is to reach 3000 Elo points!

Hari's Evergreen game!

In the fifth round of Shamkir Chess 2016, Hari was up against Pavel Eljanov. The Ukrainian grandmaster is famed for his solid play and theoretical knowledge. In order to negate that the Indian played a less known line and was ready to sacrifice pawns and pieces in order to complicate the battle! Although the attack wasn't theoretically winning, Pavel was walking on a thin rope. He had to be accurate on each and every move. Not an easy task. He blundered and the reward was a full point to Harikrishna!

Kaustav and Arpita win West Bengal Juniors

The 44th West Bengal State Junior tournament was held from the 19th to the 22nd of May 2016. Quite a few strong juniors like Neelash Saha, Mitrabha Guha in the open section and Chandrayee Hajra, Arpita Mukherjee in the girls section took part. In the end Kaustav Kundu and Arpita Mukherjee emerged victorious. We have a short and crisp report sent to us from the city of joy.

After his debacle in the third round against Sergey Karjakin, the Indian fans were hoping for Harikrishna to make a comeback against Anish Giri. However, the Dutch grandmaster had come to the game in an inspired mood. He got an interesting position out of the opening and sacrificed a pawn to launch a strong attack against the black king. A. Rameshbabu's children Vaishali and Praggnanandhaa were giving him sleepless nights. The kids were so good at chess that they kept winning titles at state, national and international levels. Coming from a humble background, Rameshbabu was struggling to afford his children's leap to the higher planes of chess competition. A huge blunder on twelfth move is unheard of in elite grandmaster chess. It does happen, but is an extremely rare occurence. In the third round of Shamkir Chess 2016 Harikrishna made a big mistake against the World Championship challenger Sergey Karjakin which made him land in a completely lost position with no chances of salvaging the game. It was a show of high class positional chess by Harikrishna as he beat Shakhiryar Mamedyarov in round two of the Shamkir Chess 2016. Playing the Pirc Defence the Azeri player hoped to complicate matters. But Harikrishna was solid as a rock. He chose a simple yet venomous setup and in a symmetrical structure, slowly but surely outplayed his opponent. With this win Hari moves into the lead with Caruana and Giri with 1.5/2. Fabi vs Hari: A draw in the sharp Sicilian

Harikrishna came excellently prepared in the first round of the Shamkir Chess 2016. He faced the top seed Fabiano Caruana with the black pieces and didn't back down from a fight. The sharp Sicilian Taimanov with opposite sides castling and pawn storms made it a highly interesting battle. It seemed as if the US Champion was a tad quicker in opening the lines. When Anatoly Karpov was 11 years old, he was invited to Botvinnik’s chess school. But the “Patriarch” passed a harsh verdict: “The boy has no clue about chess and therefore absolutely no future as a chess player.” Rarely was a judgement about a chess talent more wrong — Karpov went on to become the 12th World Chess Champion. And more than that he proved his dominance by winning an array of tournaments — more than 170 of them, actually — for around four decades. Today, he celebrates his 65th birthday.
