Mumbai 08-10: Visakh wins the Mayor's Cup

The seventh round witnessed a host of upsets — the top-seed Ivan Popov was shocked once again while Diptayan walked into the sole lead with a beautiful win over Shyaamnikhil. The eighth round was fairly sedate at the top with no 'shocking' results. But pursuing Diptayan were Himal Gusain, Visakh NR,and Boris Grachev of Russia, etc. IM Visakh NR (2400) was a full point behind Diptayan going into the eighth round, but then, just as in the 'Hare and Tortoise' story, he gained on his rival and ended up winning the tournament on the tiebreak. Bharat Singh Chauhan is a noted International Organiser and the President of Delhi Chess Association. He is also the CEO of the All India Chess Federation (AICF), Deputy President of the Asian Chess Federation, Chairman of the Commonwealth Chess Association, and the Chairman of the FIDE Technical Commission. To the chessplayers in India, he is better known as the organiser of the best tournament in India in terms of quality and the prize fund. ChessBase India did an in-depth interview with Mr. Chauhan, who talked about chess in India, the work of AICF in developing chess, his ideas of making chess richer and spectator friendly, nurturing of young talents, entrepreneurship, the economics of chess, chess in schools programme, and more. Vishal Bhat shines at the Melbourne Chess Club event

The Melbourne Chess Club celebrated its 150th anniversary by holding a tournament to determine the Grand Champion. Strong IMs like James Morris, Ari Dale. Guy West and Mirko Rujevic took part in the event. Although James Morris won the event, it was Vishal Bhat, 15-year-old boy of Indian origin with a rating of 1967, who made the headlines by finishing as the runner-up. Dr. Anandaram Jothibabu has sent us the final report of this exciting tournament.

One move blunder spoils Hari's tournament

Harikrishna finished sixth at the Shamkir Chess 2016. Things could have gone much better had the Indian converted the clear winning position he had against Eltaj Safarli in the final round. He made a blunder which would be quite apparent to even a beginner. Thus he ended the tournament with -1, and lost eight elo points. Mamedyarov won the event in a thrilling tiebreak against Caruana. Hari had actually beaten Shakhriyar in the second round! One can only be in awe of the Azeri player's fighting skills!

The Mayor's Cup 2016 witnessed some heavyweight upsets in the fourth round, the most notable being the wins by two upcoming youngsters — K.S. After seven rounds at the Shamkir Chess 2016 Harikrishna is on 3.5/7. His sixth round game against Hou Yifan was a solid draw with the black pieces. However, in the seventh round Hari had his back against the wall against Rauf Mamedov. It was only through highly resourceful play that he managed to hold a draw. With Radjabov and Safarli to go in the last two rounds, a win against them will ensure a good finish for the Indian.
