Chess in Thailand - 1st Phitsanulok International Open 2017

Is Vishy Anand hinting at retirement?

Ever since his World Championship loss against Magnus Carlsen in 2013, many have speculated about Anand's retirement at different points of time. The former five-time World Champion, however, always dismissed such ideas stating he still enjoys playing the game and has no plans of retirement. But in his interview with GM Maurice Ashley after the final round of Leuven Rapid, Anand really seemed to have lost his spirit. Calling his play mental, he went on to say that it makes no sense to him to play chess like this. Was this a reaction out of despair or is the Indian chess legend seriously hinting at retirement?

3rd "Simply Chess MOMS" Aamantran Rapid & Blitz Tournament was held on 24-June-2017, Saturday in an A.C. hall in Hotel Aamantran, RTC crossroads, Hyderabad. The tournament attracted 120 participants and was organised completely by mothers of chess playing kids in the city. From tournament announcement to the closing ceremony, moms did it all! The Commonwealth Championships 2017 are in progress in Delhi from the 3rd to the 10th of July 2017. In the open section you have 117 players from nine federations. There are fifteen GMs and fourteen IMs. Top players in action are Abhijeet Gupta, Aravindh Chithambaram, Vaibhav Suri, Ziaur Rahman, Swapnil Dhopade and many more. From Elo 2015 to 2501 in two months!

Delhi boy Vardaan Nagpal went to Europe with a rating of 2015. Being born in 2002, he had a co-efficient of 40. He played in five tournaments - First Saturday IM May and June edition, Salento Open, Balaton GM tournament and Montcada Open (which is in progress) and gained a mind boggling 486 Elo points! His live rating as on today (3rd of July) is 2501. That makes him ranked 28th India, much ahead of many grandmasters and almost all the IMs. 

Commonwealth Chess Championships 2017 begins today!

GM Abhijeet Gupta will be the top seed at the Commonwealth Chess Championships 2017 which are being held from the 3rd to 11th of July 2017 in Delhi. The Open event witnesses the participation of 15 GMs and 14 IMs. There are 15 different categories ranging from under-8 to under 20 in both open and girls section. Players from 15 countries have come to participate in the different events. Youth affairs and sports minister Vijay Goel attended the inauguration of this event and we have pictures and the video footage of his speech.

India's capital welcomes new International Master

Delhi’s Hemant Sharma completed all the requirements to become the new International Master from India after achieving his third and final IM Norm at 36th Zalakaros Chess Festival 2017. Earlier, he achieved his first IM Norm at his home turf during 10th Parsvnath Delhi International Open 2012 and secured his second norm at Isle of Man Open 2016. ChessBase India's youngest author Avathanshu Bhat caught up with Hemant Sharma for an interview.

Sahithi Varshini from Visakhapatnam is a tremendous talent. She learnt chess at the age of eight years. Within two years she was standing on the podium of the Asian Youth under-10 championships in Uzbekistan receiving the gold medal in both classical and blitz sections. Wesley So won the rapid section of the second leg of the Grand Chess Tour in Leuven with a score of 14 points, two more than MVL. After the rapids, it was time for 18 rounds of blitz spread over two days. On the first day Magnus Carlsen showcased some brilliant bit of chess and scored 7.5/9 tying for the top spot on combined rankings with Wesley So on 18.5 points. Vishy Anand recovered will in blitz after two losses to score 5.0/7 in the remaining rounds. It is going to be a race to the finish line between two of the best players of our generation. Who will win - Magnus or Wesley?

13-year-old Prithu Gupta makes his maiden IM norm

Prithu Gupta started chess around four years ago. The 13-year-old worked hard consistently and achieved something truly special at the Silver Lake Open 2017 in Serbia a few days ago. The boy from Delhi made his maiden International Master norm. He also gained 137 Elo points and is now rated 2293. From them you can clearly understand that the boy has huge talent and potential.

2692 at 22! Meet India number three Vidit Gujrathi

Just within a few years of becoming a Grandmaster, Vidit Gujrathi has established himself as one of the best players in not only India but also the world. Recently, he was able to book a spot for himself at the Chess World Cup by clinching a bronze at the Asian Individual Championship. Also, he is merely a stone's throw away from reaching the 2700 rating mark, a feat only three Indians have been able to achieve so far.
