Czech Rapid Open 2016: Puranik delivers a majestic performance

A handful of Indians has headed to the Czech Republic to compete in the Czech Open 2016 chess festival. The main event is the grandmaster tournament that began on 22 July, but prior to that, a rapid tournament was held with a very strong field replete with titled players — it was FIDE rated and formed a part of the ACP Tour. Terror strikes near home

In a world that seems to have gone mad, it was yet another act of terror that has almost left us numb after so many in succession. Gunmen had entered the Olympia mall in Munich, killing eight. National U-13 Open and Girls Chess Championship begins!

The 30th National Under-13 Open & Girls chess championship is taking place from 22 July to 30 July in Rajpath Club, Ahmedabad. The tournament is a 11-round swiss where some of India's best talents aged below thirteen are competing for the medals and a place in the Indian team for the youth tournaments. One of the better events in the Catalan Grand Prix XVIII is the Sant Martí International tournament taking place in Barcelona, Spain. The average rating of the tourney is around 2200 Elo, including 12 GMs and 18 IMs. With a total of 140 players, 73 of them titled, the tournament is quite good for players searching for experience and ratings. National Challengers 10-13: Ravi Teja takes clear first

The National Challengers Championship 2016 opened at the Amity University in Noida, Delhi, as a non-rated event, for the first time in its 54-year-history. Going into the final lap, Ravi had to make sure he maintained his half-point lead. He did the needful with a timely victory in the tenth round and finished with three draws to become the champion with 10/13. Benasque: Sasikiran triumphs with 9.0/10

The 36th Benasque International Tournament was held from 07-16 July 2016 in the cool and serene town of Benasque in Huesca province of Spain. GM Krishnan Sasikiran had a fantastic tournament. He already raced away to a commanding 5.0/5, and then settled for draws with GM Andrey Baryshpolets (2551) and GM Yuriy Kuzubov (2635). Lake Sevan 01+02: Vidit has a positive start

The 2016 Lake Sevan International Tournament began in Martuni, Armenia. The tourney is a 10-player round-robin with an average rating of 2629 and a prize fund of $9200, that is, approximately Rs. 6,18,000. The Indian challenge is led by GM Vidit Gujrathi, who was off to a flying start with a victory defending the black pieces, and is among the early leaders at 1.5/2. An illustrated report. Danzhou 07-09: Hari finishes second after defeating the leader

After an early loss, Harikrishna did a splendid job of solidifying his position and reaching fifty percent at the end of six rounds. It was important that he keep the momentum going. He did just that with a timely win over the leader Nepomniachtchi. He finished with two draws against the Chinese to take the second place in the super-tournament. An illustrated report.

Aditya Savalkar is a talented chess player from Kolhapur. With his father being a peon at the Shivaji University in Kolhapur and his mother sewing clothes to make ends meet, the family has a hard time to pursue their son's passion for the game of chess. But giving up is not an option. Most recently I2V chess centre in Mumbai came to Aditya's aid as they helped him enroll for the under-11 nationals that took place a fortnight ago in Chattisgarh. The tournament was expected to attract the stronger players into the tournament, now that there is no possibility for them to lose rating. But there was no change in the trend. A handful of the higher seeds is having  a tough time at the 2016 edition of the Challengers. The tournament has been full of surprise results. IM Ravi Teja leads the tourney with 7.5/11. An illustrated report.
