4th President Cup Masters 2025 R5: Nihal Sarin beats Shant Sargsyan to emerge sole leader

Nihal Sarin defeated Shant Sargsyan (ARM) to gain sole lead 4/5 at 4th International President Cup 2025 Masters. Nihal played the queen, rook and bishop endgame masterfully to score the win. Frederik Svane (GER) and Maxime Lagarde (FRA) are the other two victors of the round. They won against Alexander Grischuk and Yuriy Kuzubov (UKR) respectively. Shamsiddin Vokhidov (UZB) drew against Mukhiddin Madaminov (UZB). They both are trailing Nihal by a half point at 3.5/5 each. Indian Oil 51st National Women 2025 R6: Shubhi Gupta outplays Mary Ann Gomes, scores a double hat-trick

WFM Shubhi Gupta (UP) defeated her coleader, WGM Mary Ann Gomes (PSPB) to score a double hat-trick of wins at Indian Oil 51st National Women Chess Championship 2025. Shubhi sacrificed a couple of pawns early in the game which her opponent accepted. Mary's bishop got trapped, she tried to generate some counterplay but things did not work out for her. The defending champion, WGM Nandhidhaa P V (TN) won against WFM Sneha Halder (WB) to move to 5.5/6. WIM Srishti Pandey (MAH) and WIM Kalyani Sirin (KER) played a hard-fought draw which spanned a little over five hours. WFM Nivedita V C (TN) defeated her second WGM in-a-row, Varshini V (TN). Nivedita won in just 22 moves in less than 80 minutes. The reigning Telangana State Women 2025 champion, Shivamshika G defeated the current National Under-13 Girls champion, WCM Deekshitha Modipalli (AP). Round 7 starts tomorrow at 10 a.m. IST. Freestyle Grand Slam Tour Finals starts today at Grootbos Private Nature in Walker Bay, Hermanus, South Africa. The top eight finishers of the tour will battle each other in Round-Robin Rapid stage. The top three players will get to choose their Quarterfinal opponents. The newly crowned FIDE World Cup 2025 winner, Javokhir Sindarov (UZB) got number 1 at the Draw of Lots, Vincent Keymer (GER) no.2 and Arjun Erigaisi 3. Arjun will start the day with a game against Hans Niemann (USA). The remaining pairings are: Sindarov vs Magnus Carlsen (NOR), Keymer vs Levon Aronian (USA) and Parham Maghsoodloo (IRI) vs Fabiano Caruana (USA). Punjab gets another International Master - Namitbir Singh Walia

Punjab has a new International Master to celebrate. 20-year-old Namitbir Singh Walia secured the IM title at the Annemasse Chess Festival in France. His first IM-norm was scored at the 3rd Rudar GM Round Robin chess tournament in Serbia in 2023. After nearly two years, he earned his second IM-norm at the IM Round-Robin tournament in Bosnia and Herzegovina in September 2025. And the final norm came in the following month. Punjab made its first major breakthrough in chess in 2022 when Dushyant Sharma became the state’s first International Master. Nihal Sarin made quick draw in the fourth round of 4th International President Cup 2025 Masters. The game lasted less than an hour against the former three-time World Blitz champion, Alexander Grischuk. It was a theoretical draw arising out of Ruy Lopez Berlin Defence. Yuriy Kuzubov (UKR) scored the sole victory of the round against Frederik Svane (GER). The previous round leaders - Mukhiddin Madaminov (UZB), Shamsiddin Vokhidov (UZB) and Nihal are still at the top of the standings with a score of 3/4 each. WFM Shubhi Gupta (UP) and WFM Mary Ann Gomes (PSPB) have emerged coleaders after Round 5 of Indian Oil 51st National Women Chess Championship 2025. Shubhi made the most out of her color break with the white pieces again. Facing King's Indian Defence for the second consecutive game, Shubhi did not make any significant mistake. Her opponent, WCM Akshaya Sathi (KAR), made an incorrect queen trade offer which cost her the game eventually. Mary Ann used her experience to halt WCM Divi Bijesh's (KER) dream run at the event. The defending champion, WGM Nandhidhaa P V (TN) won a 5 hour 15+ minute-long grueling minor piece endgame battle against IM Nisha Mohota (PSPB). Meylis Annaberdiyev wins 9th Mersin Metropolitan Municipality International Open 2025

GM Meylis Annaberdiyev (TKM) and IM Arash Tahbaz (IRI) scored 7/9 each at 9th Mersin Metropolitan Municipality International Chess Tournament 2025. Meylis won the tournament on tie-breaks, Arash secured second place. GM Aryan Gholami (IRI) scored sole 6.5/9 to finish third. The total prize fund was Turkish Lira 905000. The prize fund in Category A was 617500. The top three prizes were 150000, 110000 and 90000 along with a medal each. IM Bala Chandra Prasad Dhulipalla was the sole Indian taking part in the event. Nihal Sarin scored his second win of the event against Yuriy Kuzubov (UKR). The third round of 4th International President Cup 2025 Masters had three decisive games. In an already difficult major piece endgame, Kuzubov first misplayed and then lost his rook. Mukhiddin Madaminov (UZB) and Shamsiddin Vokhidov (UZB) are the remaining two victors of the round against Abdimalik Abdisalimov (UZB) and Alexander Grischuk respectively. WGM Mary Ann Gomes, WFM Shubhi Gupta, WCM Divi Bijesh and WCM Akshaya Sathi are the four players who have made a perfect start at Indian Oil 51st National Women Chess Championship 2025. Shubhi got the better of one of the leaders, Nivedita after the latter's queen got stuck at b7 for the better part of the game. Jeevika crumbled against Mary Ann. Akshaya outplayed WGM Varshini V. Divi continues her great form as she capitalized on her opponent, WCM Deekshitha Modipalli's mistake in the endgame. Second seeded, WGM Sarayu Velpula got outplayed WFM Bristy Mukherjee after the former made a questionable choice early in the game. The four leaders will face each other in the fifth round. GRECO Law Company wins FIDE World Corporate Chess Championship 2025

GRECO Law Company defeated Morgan Stanley by 3.5-0.5 in the second Final match to win FIDE World Corporate Chess Championship 2025. The winning team also earned the title of The Smartest Company in the World. The first match of the Finals between GRECO and Morgan Stanley ended in a 2-2 draw. Thus, Morgan Stanley finished second. GRECO had one GM and three IMs, all from Ukraine. The runner-up, Morgan Stanley comprised of two GMs, one IM and two FMs. Deloitte 1 beat Google 3-1 in both duels to finish third. Deloitte 1 had three IMs and a WFM, the sole female participant in the entire tournament. Total 11 teams, six in Pool A and five in Pool B participated in the Round-Robin Pool stage after qualifying through lichess online qualifiers. The top two teams from each Pool advanced to the Semifinals. Unlike the previous edition, chess federations and associations were prohibited from participating. The second round of 4th International President Cup 2025 Masters witnessed five draws. Nihal Sarin was up against France no.6, Maxime Lagarde. The game started in the Closed Ruy Lopez. Nihal sacrificed a pawn on the queenside to gain some initiative. However, none to be found. Soon a bunch of pieces got exchanged and the game arrived at an equal rook and minor pieces endgame. Draw became the obvious result. Currently, five players - Shant Sargsyan (ARM), Mukhiddin Madaminov (UZB), Bardiya Daneshvar (IRI), Shamsiddin Vokhidov (UZB) and Nihal are at 1.5/2 each. Indian Oil 51st National Women 2025 R3: Nivedita and Divi Bijesh beat WGMs

WFM Nivedita V C (TN) and WCM Divi Bijesh (KER) defeated WGMs Srija Seshadri (TN) and Swati Ghate (LIC) respectively in Round 3 of Indian Oil 51st National Women Championship 2025. The new Commonwealth 2025 Women Gold medalist, Srija got herself in trouble right out of the opening and could not recover for the rest of the game. Divi on the other hand scored another impressive win over the legendary WGM. WFM Bristy Mukherjee (WB) and Maitreyi Mondal (WB) held the top seed, WIM Arpita Mukherjee (WB) and the defending champion, WGM Nandhidhaa P V (TN) to well contested draws. Saptorshi Gupta clear first at New Zealand Fischer Random Championship 2025

Saptorshi Gupta scored an unbeaten 5.5/6 to win New Zealand Fischer Random Championship 2025. He finished a half point ahead of the rest. FM Felix Xie (NZL) scored 5/6 to finish second overall. However, Felix is declared as the official champion as he is the highest finisher among New Zealand players. CM Kendrick Botong Zhang (NZL) and FM Alphaeus Wei Arn Ang (NZL) scored 4.5/6 each. They shared third place. The total prize fund was NZ$ 2450. The top three prizes were NZ$ 500, 350 and 250. This was Saptorshi's second of the year and overall third triumph in New Zealand.
