Divi continues her great form as she capitalized on her opponent, WCM Deekshitha Modipalli's mistake in the endgame. Second seeded, WGM Sarayu Velpula got outplayed WFM Bristy Mukherjee after the former made a questionable choice early in the game. The four leaders will face each other in the fifth round. It will be Shubhi vs Akshaya and Mary Ann vs Divi. Round 5 starts tomorrow at 10 a.m. IST. Photos: Shahid Ahmed

Sarayu Velpula crumbles against Bristy Mukherjee

A couple of rating favorites suffered losses in the fourth round. They are - WGM Varshini V, WGM Sarayu Velpula.

Shubhi - Nivedita: 1-0

The former National Junior Girls champion, WFM Shubhi Gupta (UP, 2259) was aware of the line in King's Indian Defence till 9...Ne8. WFM Nivedita V C's (TN, 2003) queen got stuck on b7 for quite a while.

Position after 21...Qb7

The queen remained at b7 from 21st move to till the end of the game.

Position after 40.Ned4!

White found a beautiful finish at the end 40.Ned4! exd4 41.Nxd4 Ke7 42.Bxg5+ Nxg5 43.Qxh6 Nf7 44.Nc6+ and it's over as Black has to give up her queen to prevent checkmate.

Jeevika - Mary Ann

Position after 17...Ne4

Jeevika S (PUD, 2028) made an unforced error 17.f4?! WGM Mary Ann Gomes (PSPB, 2243) had no trouble spotting her opportunity 17...Ne4 18.Qd3? Nf2-+ Black got an exchange and converted it into a win comfortably.

Jeevika S (PUD) crumbled against a tough challenge - WGM Mary Ann Gomes (PSPB)

Akshaya - Varshini: 1-0

Akshaya Sathi (1956) is the first girl of her state to win Karnataka State Open Championship. She did it a few months ago. It goes without saying that her play against WGM Varshini V (TN, 2170) showed that.

Position after 13.g5

Akshaya mentioned in the post-game interview that g4-g5 was part of her preparation. 13...Ne8 14.f4 Bb7 15.f5 exf5 16.Nxf5 Ne6 here she spent nearly 20 minutes to calculate whether to play 17.Nd5 or Qh5. Eventually she settled for 17.Qh5 g6 18.Nh6+ Kg7 19.Qh3 Nxg5 20.Bxg5 Bxg5 21.Nxf7 Bc8 22.Qg2 Bf6 would have kept the game going. 22...Be3?? 23.Kh1 Bb7 24.Nd5+- Bxd5 25.Bxd5 and the rest was just academic for White to convert her advantage into a win.

WCM Divi Bijesh (KER) continues her perfect run

Arpita - Ananya

Position after 22...Bf6

Ananya Raman (TN) held the top seed, WIM Arpita Mukherjee (WB) to a draw

Sarayu - Bristy

Position after 9.Rh3

WGM Sarayu Velpula (TEL, 2296) made a strange decision by forfeiting her castling rights as she moved both of her rooks consecutively. 9.Rh3?! is a new move.

Position after 22.c4?

22.c4? undoubles White's c-pawns. However, it only helps Black as she can now open up the position and White's pieces are lacking harmony. 22...Kc8 23.cxd5 Rxd5 24.Rxd5 Nxd5 and Black went on to convert her advantage into a win. WFM Bristy Mukherjee (WB, 2008) drew against the top seed, WIM Arpita Mukherjee (WB) yesterday and now she defeated the second seed of the event, Sarayu.

WGM Sarayu Velpula (TEL) got outplayed by WFM Bristy Mukherjee (WB)
