Vishy Anand back home...finally!

"This was a reminder to appreciate what we have, when we have it! Vishy Anand has seen many tough situations in his life, but the period between Mid February to first week of June, was perhaps the most testing of them all. Because of the Covid-19 pandemic Vishy was trapped in Germany for three months. Staying at his own place in Bad Soden Anand had to do the grocery shopping, cook food for himself and also find ways to keep himself in shape mentally and physically. He managed to do that and finally on 31st of May 2020 arrived back in India. Like a true champion, Anand took this event in his life as one of learning and shares his experience with us.

Mamedyarov wins World Stars Sharjah Online, Harikrishna finishes second

Former World Rapid champion Shakhriyar Mamedyarov won World Stars Sharjah Online International 2020 with an unbeaten 7.5/10. He finished a full point ahead of the runner-up Pentala Harikrishna who scored 6.5/10. In the final round, UAE no.1 Salem Saleh was the only person who got closest to beating Mamedyarov but unfortunately he missed the opportunity after playing a spectacular and arguably the best game of the tournament. Polish GM Radoslaw Wojtaszek secured the third position with 6.0/10. Mamedyarov won US$ 3000 while Harikrishna and Wojtaszek walked away with US$ 2250 and 1750 respectively. Harikrishna makes a strong start at World Stars Sharjah Online International

Harikrishna made a strong start at World Stars Sharjah Online International Championship 2020. He scored 3.0/5 on day 1 and currently he is at shared second position with former World Champion and Caruana's second Rustam Kasimdzhanov. Currently former World Rapid champion Shakhriyar Mamedyarov is leading the tournament with 4.0/5. He remained unbeaten in the tournament so far. Africa and Egypt no.1 Bassem Amin had a tough day as he missed a few wins. Magnus Carlsen Chess Tour continues with the third stage of the event taking place from 20th June to 5th July in Chessable Masters by chess24. The tournament will witness the debut of the no.1 Indian Chessable author Pentala Harikrishna in the Magnus Carlsen Chess Tour. The tournament will also witness the winner of Lindores Abbey Rapid Challenge, former World Rapid Champion and one of Carlsen's seconds Daniil Dubov. Vachier-Lagrave, Grischuk, Caruana, Radjabov, Giri, Nakamura, Ding, Nepomniachtchi, Artemiev and of course Carlsen will be seen in action to fight for a total of $150k prize fund and a spot in the tour final. A unique online exhibition event successfully conducted by IOC and ChessBase India

The Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) is one company whose support for Indian chess has been unparalleled over the years. From sponsoring top Grandmasters of the country like Surya Shekhar Ganguly and Adhiban Baskaran to hunting down young talents and aiding them, their impact on the sport has been significant. Well, they are also taking excellent initiative during these lockdown times to ensure that public interest in the game doesn't wane. Recently on 24th of May they conducted a unique online exhibition event through ChessBase India featuring two of the most highly regarded figures of Indian chess - GM Abhijit Kunte and IM D V Prasad. We bring you the details in this brief report.   

Arpita Mukherjee wins Bronze in Asian Junior Girls Online 2020

WIM Arpita Mukherjee won a Bronze medal in Asian Junior Girls Online Championship 2020. She was the sole medal winner for India in this online edition of Asian Junior 2020. She is a former Asian Youth Under-18 and Commonwealth Under-20 Girls Gold medalist, scored 6.5/9 to make a podium finish. Reigning National Junior Girls Champion WFM Srishti Pandey and Asian Junior 2019 Silver and Bronze medalist WIM Aakanksha Hagawane both scored 5.5/9, they were placed fourth and sixth respectively according to tie-breaks. 28 GMs, 30 IMs will be seen in action in Letsup MCA GP Blitz 3

LetsUp presents MCA Grand Prix Blitz 3 will take place on Wednesday 17th June 2020. The second event was won by World no.1 in Under-16 and newly crowned Asian Junior Open Online Champion GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov of Uzbekistan. The entire event will have a total prize fund of ₹155000. Each event in the GP will have a total prize fund of ₹25000 and additional top five finishers of the GP will receive a total of ₹30000. The tournament is Open to everyone all across the world. Entry is FREE for GMs, IMs, WGMs and WIMs. For others, entry fee for each tournament is ₹250. Registration for Blitz 3 is now Open. Could Petrosian have held against Fischer?

The Fischer-Petrosian Candidates match of 1971 in Buenos Aires was the third and final round in the eliminations to determine the challenger for the World Championship 1972. After defeating two top grandmasters 6-0 each, the charismatic American faced former World Champion Tigran Petrosian who was considered to be almost undefeatable. Their match started 2½-2½, and then in game six Fischer scored a superb win that turned the match in his favor. Did Petrosian seal the wrong move, could he have defended to a draw? Vugar Rasulov wins Letsup presents MCA GP Blitz 1

GM Vugar Rasulov of Azerbaijan won Letsup presents MCA GP Blitz 1 on 3rd June with an unbeaten score of 8.5/10. This was also his ChessBase India Online Blitz debut. The tournament was the first of five events in the Grand Prix. Rasulov won ₹6500 cash prize for his efforts. Four players finished at 8.0/10. GM Vaibhav Suri, GM Jose Eduardo Martinez Alcantara, GM D Gukesh and GM R Praggnanandhaa. They were placed second, third and fourth respectively according to their tie-break scores.
