FIDE Online Olympiad 2021: Everything on the line after Day 2

Sixty federation teams battled it out today on Chess.com's online servers for the sixteen qualification spots that advance to the next stage of the Olympiad. Pool A started very early - 0800 UTC (1:30 p.m. IST) and Pool E closed the playing day at 20.00 UTC (1:30 a.m. IST), for more than twelve hours of official online chess: rounds 4-7 are now in the books! Nepal, Hong Kong and Lebanon in Pool A; Malawi, Kenya and Palestine in Pool B; Cyprus, Angola and Jersey in Pool C; Aruba, Suriname and Ghana in Pool D; Trinidad & Tobago, Puerto Rico and Haiti in Pool E are the respective leaders of their Pool at the conclusion of Day 2. Sinquefield Cup R5: Xiong stuns Caruana

Jeffery Xiong scored the biggest win of the round as he beat Caruana for the first time in his career in the fifth round of Sinquefield Cup 2021. He has beaten Carlsen last year in Clutch Rapid but never beat Caruana until yesterday. Vachier-Lagrave was the only other victor of the day as he handed Swiercz his fourth loss of the event. Mamedyarov-Leinier, Svidler-Shankland and So-Rapport ended in draws. So, Vachier-Lagrave and Leinier share a three-way lead 3.5/5 in the final and what is turning out to be the most interesting leg of the Grand Chess Tour 2021. Today is the sole rest day of the event. FIDE Online Olympiad starts off with 400+ games on Day 1

FIDE Online Olympiad started on Friday 20th August at Chess.com’s online servers. A total of 153 teams from all over the world have signed up for the event, meaning that more than 1000 players will participate over the next three weeks. The tournament is structured in two stages: the “Divisions stage”, in which teams are seeded into each Round-Robin Pool, based on their previous results at the OTB Batumi Chess Olympiad in 2018 and in the last year’s Online Olympiad. Sinquefield Cup R4: Leinier scores a magnificent win over MVL

Leinier Dominguez Perez scored his second victory of the event, against one of the tournament leaders - Maxime Vachier-Lagrave in the fourth round of Sinquefield Cup 2021. The American's win is definitely a strong contender for the brilliancy prize worth US$ 5000. Svidler's woes continued as he lost his third game of the event, this time against Rapport who employed his trusty secret weapon 1.g3. Shankland and Swiercz scored their first victory of the event against Mamedyarov and Xiong respectively. So and Caruana drew their games against each other. Sinquefield Cup R3: So beats Svidler convincingly

Wesley So scored his second consecutive victory of the event to share the lead with Caruana and Vachier-Lagrave in Sinquefield Cup 2021. All three of them are at 2.5/3. So completely outplayed Svidler in the middlegame and finished the game in 28 moves. Mamedyarov scored his first win of the tournament in an exciting encounter against Rapport. Shankland made a rare blunder against Vachier-Lagrave in the seemingly equal knight endgame. Caruana scored a comfortable victory over Swiercz who suffered his third consecutive loss. Institute of Neurosciences Kolkata celebrate 75th Independence Day in ChessBase India t-shirts

Chess is more than just a sport. It is not only about ratings, titles, championships, medals and statistics, it's much more than that. This past Sunday, on the occasion of India's 75th Independence Day, Institute of Neurosciences Kolkata organized a chess tournament which was participated by the hospital's doctor, nurse, pathologist, administrative departments, maintenance, security staff and more. It was the brainchild of Dr. Hrishikesh Kumar, Head of Neurology and Vice-Chairman of the hospital. Sinquefield Cup R2: Only So scores a win

Wesley So scored the sole victory in the second round of Sinquefield Cup 2021. He is now in a four-way lead with Caruana, Vachier-Lagrave and Leinier at 1.5/2. So is currently leading the Grand Chess Tour 2021 tour standings. He would definitely like to win this event and the entire season too. Leinier-Caruana, Shankland-Xiong and Svidler-Mamedyarov had well-contested draws. Only Rapport-MVL game did not witness enough fight. Players mourned the loss of Evgeny Sveshnikov and paid their respects by having the Sveshnikov position on their boards before the start of the game. Round 3 starts tonight from 1:30 a.m. IST. Sinquefield Cup R1: Caruana scores a brilliant win

The fifth and final leg of the Grand Chess Tour 2021 is Sinquefield Cup. The first round had three winners - Caruana, Leinier and Vachier-Lagrave. While MVL and Leinier scored relatively comfortable victories over Svidler and Swiercz respectively, Caruana scripted a beautiful win over Shankland which is definitely an early contender for the brilliancy prize worth US$ 5000. Mamedyarov made the biggest escape of the day against So as he was completely lost in the endgame till the American loosened his grip and let him escape with a draw. The second edition of Sultan Khan Cup sponsored by IPS Academy will be held on 26th August 2021 at 7:30 p.m. IST. IPS Academy is one of the largest educational hubs of Central India. With the support of Mr.Achal Choudhary, the founder of IPS Academy and Madhya Pradesh's first IM Akshat Khamparia, the 2nd Sultan Khan Cup will be organized by ChessBase India on Tornelo. The total prize fund is ₹100,000. The first prize will be ₹20,000. There are 30 main prizes, five prizes for Women and ten for Madhya Pradesh players as well. Raunak Sadhwani wins 19th Splimbergo Open 2021 on India's 75th Independence Day

GM Raunak Sadhwani won his second tournament in a month as he scored 7.0/9, remained undefeated to win 19th Splimbergo International Open 2021. He received €1500 and a trophy for his efforts. He has also gained 10 Elo rating points. India's latest IM Vaishali R was the only other Indian participant in the event. She scored an impressive 6.0/9, finished 14th and gained 12 rating points. She is the only woman to have finished in top 45. The most important thing Raunak earned is neither the trophy nor the rating, but the acknowledgement and praise by the seven-time world champion Vishy Anand who tweeted about Raunak's triumph. One cannot ask a better endorsement.

Vincent Keymer wins Kramnik Challenge

Both Vincent Keymer and Awonder Liang scored 11.5/15, however the 16-year-old German clinched the Kramnik Challenge as he had a better tie-break score. He has earned himself a place in the next Meltwater Champions Chess Tour event. Keymer scored an important victory over Liang in the penultimate round, which turned out to be a key win for him. Abudsattorov secured the third position 11.0/15, followed by Yoo 10.0/15 and Tingjie at fourth and fifth places respectively. Streamer Nakamura dominates Saint Louis Rapid and Blitz 2021

Hikaru Nakamura made an unfathomable comeback to over-the-board chess as he destroyed the field of world-class players and won Saint Louis Rapid and Blitz 2021, with three rounds to spare as a wild card. He remained undefeated throughout the event, and it could be the first time a wild card entrant remained undefeated and won a Grand Chess Tour event. Nakamura himself claimed that he is a streamer first and chess player second. The 'Speed King' has inspired countless people and brought mainstream attention to chess, many people have often imitated and tried to walk on his path of success, but his triumphant return will remain difficult to be duplicated by anyone for a very long time. Alexander Donchenko deservedly wins Riga Technical University Open 2021, Narayanan finishes second

Top seed of the tournament, Alexander Donchenko made a storybook comeback by scoring six victories in the last six rounds after starting the event 1.5/3 to win Riga Technical University Open 2021. The German finished a half point ahead of the competition. Four players finished at 7.0/9. Narayanan S L secured the second position as he had the best tie-breaks followed by IM Tomas Laurusas (LTU), GM Gergely Kantor (HUN) and GM Karthikeyan Murali.
