The first ever ChessBase India Chess Club session

ChessBase India launched its first ever chess club at the Phoenix Market City in Mumbai. Located in Kurla, Phoenix Market City is one of Mumbai's finest and biggest malls. 50 chess sets were placed for chess enthusiasts from all across the city to come and play over the board! We had close to 300 people visiting the venue making the event a grand success! The idea of the chess club is to create a hub in the city of Mumbai where people can come, learn, enjoy and play a game of chess! Doing it in a mall helps in popularizing the game as well.

Magnus Carlsen on the verge of winning the Charity Cup

Magnus Carlsen needed only three games to win the first set of the Finals of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Charity Cup. The first game was a well-fought draw. However, Jan-Krysztof Duda faltered in the next two games which means the world champion won the set 2.5-0.5. The Poland no.1 now must-win the second set to force tie-breaks. He has already mentioned of trying hard to hide his Candidates preparation, early in the tournament. Will he able to bounce back and force tie-breaks? 19th Delhi GM Open R5-6: Lalit Rohit and Karthik Venkataraman share the lead

GM Lalit Rohit and GM Karthik Venkataraman are the coleaders 5.5/6 at 19th Delhi International GM Open 2022. Lalit had a good opportunity to topple the top seed, Pavel Ponkratov. Unfortunately for Lalit, he could not capitalize it and the game ended in a draw. Karthik scored the sole win among the top six boards in Round 6 against GM Visakh N R to join the lead. 17 players are in pursuit at 5.0/6 each. GM Laxman R R's woes continue as he suffered his second loss of the event, it was against WGM Srija Seshadri in the sixth round. She is currently the top performing female in the field. Russia and Belarus teams suspended from Official FIDE tournaments

FIDE Council was held online on 15th March made several important decisions. The 44th Chess Olympiad will be organized by All India Chess Federation in Chennai from 28th July to 10th August 2022. AICF has also been awarded the 94th FIDE Congress to be organized in Chennai from 31st July to 9th August. 7th August has been approved as the date for FIDE elections. A strong preference has been made to organize Chess Olympiad for People with Disabilities on the same dates as 44th Chess Olympiad. Women's Candidates 2022 has been postponed to the last quarter of the year and continue consultations with the players about its format. For more details, check the article. Photo: FIDE

Charity Cup SF: Carlsen will face arch rival Duda in the Finals

Jan-Krzysztof Duda advances to his first Finals in the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour. The Poland no.1 defeated the in-form Liem Le Quang 2.5-1.5 in the Semifinals. After a 110-move long draw against the world no.3, Carlsen drew the second game and won the next two to setup a clash with his biggest nemesis since he became a world champion. We all remember Duda ending Carlsen's 125-game unbeaten streak in October 2020 and in August 2021, Duda shattered Carlsen's World Cup dreams. 13-year-old Yashita Rout held GM Mitrabha Guha to a draw in Round 4 of 19th Delhi International GM Open 2022. She survived all of her opponent's attempts for 100 moves. Top seeds and rating favorites had a relatively easier round. Seven players are at 4.0/4. They are - GM Arjun Erigaisi, GM Azer Mirzoev (AZE), GM Lalith Rohit, GM Iniyan P, FM Seyed Kian Poormosavi, IM Shahil Dey and GM Visakh N R. Charity Cup QF: Carlsen, Duda and Ding Liren storm into Semifinals

Magnus Carlsen, Jan-Krzysztof Duda and Ding Liren took the minimum number of games to advance to the Semifinals of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Charity Cup. They eliminated Hans Niemann, David Anton Guijarro and Jorden van Foreest. Niemann was impressive in his first game as he held the world champion to a draw despite being behind in the material. Liem Le Quang is the only Semifinalist to have suffered a game loss in his Quarterfinal encounter against David Navara. It will be Liem vs Duda and Ding vs Carlsen in the Semifinals. 19th Delhi GM Open R2-3: Rohith Krishna showcases his endgame endurance

16-year-old FM Rohith Krishna S had a fantastic second day at 19th Delhi International GM Open 2022. The 2304-rated teenager first survived an endgame against GM Deepan Chakkravarthy in Round 2. In the third round, Rohith was once again in another Rook and Knight endgame, only this time it was his opponent, the five-time Commonwealth Gold medalist, GM Abhijeet Gupta who needed to play accurately to save the day. Unfortunately, he could not, and Rohith won the game. IM Shahil Dey beat GM Masoud Mosadeghpour. Krishna Teja clinches Masthanaiah All India Rapid Rating Open 2022

IM Krishna Teja N scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 and finished a half point ahead of the competition to win Masthanaiah All India Rapid Rating Open 2022. His only draw was against Sooriya B Y in the fourth round. Four players scored 8.0/9 - FM Syed Anwar Shazuli, FM Sekar B, GM Laxman R R and Surendran N. They were placed second to fifth according to the tie-breaks. Krishna won ₹100000 cash, Runner-up Shazuli earned ₹30000 and Sekar received ₹20000 cash as their respective prize. Charity Cup R13-15: Heartbreak for Praggnanandhaa and Vidit

Vidit Gujrathi needed a win against Magnus Carlsen and Praggnanandhaa a draw against David Anton Guijarro. Vidit drew and Pragg lost in the final round of the Prelims stage Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Charity Cup. Both of them had winning chances but it was certainly not easy. Thus, they both got eliminated from the tournament. Liem managed to escape Carlsen's grasp and salvage a draw against the world champion. The Vietnam no.1 topped the Prelims stage 32.0/45, followed by Carlsen 29.0/45. Praggnanandhaa handed Jorden his second loss of the event in Round 14. 19th Delhi GM Open R1: Shivika Rohilla stuns GM Laxman

14-year-old Shivika Rohilla scored the biggest upset in the first round of 19th Delhi International GM Open 2022. The 1898-rated teenager from Delhi beat the Blitz king of India, GM Laxman R R who became unbeaten champion in 2nd SkillCraft - Omvati Memorial Rapid and Blitz Open, two days before the start of this event. The 19th edition of the biggest International GM Open tournament of the country is back after a two year hiatus due to Covid-19 pandemic. Bharat Singh Chauhan, Hony. FIDE Ethics imposes a six-month ban on Karjakin

The FIDE Ethics and Disciplinary Commission has banned Sergey Karjakin 'from participating as a player in any FIDE rated chess competition' all over the world, starting from 21st March 2022. Karjakin's public comments on Russia's military invasion of Ukraine upset the majority of the chess fraternity and the entire world. The ban means Karjakin will not be able to play FIDE Candidates 2022 which is slated to take place in Madrid, Spain from 16th June to 5th July 2022. GM Sergey Shipov, a regular commentator, was not banned because, "In comparison with Sergey Karjakin, Sergei Shipov is considerably less known and has, therefore, a less powerful platform." Bangladesh Police does a hat-trick of Premier League triumphs

Bangladesh Police scored a hat-trick of Bangladesh Premier League wins by winning Golden Jubilee of Independence Premier Division Chess League 2021. The team scored an unbeaten 20.0/22. They have not lost a single match since 2019. This was the first time, among their three consecutive triumphs, they conceded two draws against the remaining podium finishers - runner-up SAIF Sporting Club and second runner-up Bangladesh Biman. Both of them scored 18.0/22 each, however they were placed second and third respectively according to the tie-breaks. Top three teams received Tk 125,000, Tk 75000 and Tk 50000 each respectively. Charity Cup R9-12: Vidit beats Duda

Vidit Gujrathi remained undefeated on the third day, just like how he started his campaign at Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Charity Cup. He won against Ju Wenjun and Jan-Krzysztof Duda in a pretty similar fashion, drew with Hans Niemann and fellow countryman, Pentala Harikrishna. Vidit is now at eighth position with 18.0/36. He is closely followed by Praggnanandhaa 17.0/36. Harikrishna drew seven games in-a-row.
