Humpy and Harika set to battle at FIDE Women's GP in Munich

The second leg of the FIDE Women's Grand Prix 2022-23 will start in Munich, Germany from Thursday 2nd February 2023. GM Koneru Humpy and GM Harika Dronavalli will be the Indian participants in the fray. Humpy is also the highest rated player in the event. The 12-player round-robin tournament will feature GM Tan Zhongyi, GM Mariya Muzychuk, GM Anna Muzychuk, GM Alexandra Kosteniuk, GM Nana Dzagnidze, GM Zhansaya Abdumalik, IM Alina Kashlinskaya, WGM Zhu Jiner, GM Elisabeth Paehtz and WGM Dinara Wagner along with the previously mentioned Humpy and Harika. 1st FIDE Olympiad for PwD 2023 R3: India stuns Israel 3-1

India continues its great momentum at FIDE Olympiad for People with Disabilities 2023. Team India defeated the second seeded Israel convincingly 3-1. IM Shashikant Kutwal and Kishan Gangolli defeated their much higher rated opponents, GM Yehuda Gruenfeld and FM Alexey Streltsov respectively. Naveen Kumar A also scored a crucial victory against WFM Aleksandra Aleksandrova. Darpan Inani suffered the sole loss. There are three teams at a 100% score of 6/6 - India, Philippines and Poland. Prudhvi Kumar V wins Prestige Open B Below 2000 Rating Tournament 2023

23-year-old Prudhvi Kumar V and Jovan Mijajlovic (SRB) scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 each. Prudhvi won the Prestige 2023 Open B Below 2000 Rating tournament due to better tie-breaks. It was part of Winter Chess Festival "Paracin 2023". Their fourth round encounter ended in a draw and they both finished a full point ahead of the competition. FM Dinu-Simi Suciu (ROU) scored sole 6.5/9 to finish third. The total prize fund of the tournament was 180000 RSD (approx. ₹135914). 1st FIDE Olympiad for PwD 2023 R1-2: India makes a good start

The first edition of FIDE Olympiad for People with Disabilities started on 30th January 2023. India is represented by five players - Soundarya Kumar Pradhan, IM Shashikant Kutwal, Kishan Gangolli, Darpan Inani and Naveen Kumar A. Apart from Soundarya, the remaining four have scored at least one win each. India as a team won both matches. They whitewashed Panama in the first and defeated Cuba 3-1 in the second round. You get to know about your favourite personalities in a deep and intimate way. On 28th of January 2023 we saw an episode of "The Long Game" released on the chess legend and 5-time chess world champion Viswanathan Anand. "The Long Game" invites sporting legends and asks them to take the viewers down the memory lane through 10 artefacts in their museum of memories in just 10 minutes. Anand's choice of 10 artefacts is amazing and it includes some amazing anecdotes on Kasparov, Kramnik, Carlsen, how he became the lightning kid and much more. One of the advice that Anand gave in the video helped IM Sagar Shah think deeply about his issue of procrastination. Check out the article.

Pranesh wins 1st ENS Rapid Rating Open 2023 and a brand new TVS Raider-125 Bike

India's 79th GM Pranesh M scored an unbeaten 7.5/8 to win 1st ENS Rapid Rating Open 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the field. The first prize was not a conventional cash and trophy. The 16-year-old won a brand new TVS Raider-125 bike worth ₹100000. Eight players scored 8/9 each. Out of them, IM FT Harikrishnan A Ra and GM Arjun Kalyan secured second and third place respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹200000. The runner-ups received ₹10000 and ₹7000 each respectively. A total of 409 players including 4 GMs and 2 IMs took part in this one-day event organized by Avengers Chess Academy. 1500+ players in action at MPL 11th National Schools 2023

The National Schools Chess Championship is the biggest chess tournament in India in terms of numbers. Players take part in six different age group in Open and Girls category, thus the number become quite big. The 11th edition sponsored by MPL Sports Foundation is witnessing the participation of 1537 players from various states across the country. The Under-13 Open itself has 257 players taking part, followed by 244 in Under-13 Open and 184 in Under-15 Open. Currently, eight players are in the sole lead in their respective age group and only two players are at perfect 7/7. They are - Vyom Malhota (HAR) and Saharsha Challa (TEL) in Under-9 and Under-13 Open respectively. Among the Girls, Prasiddhi Bhat (KAR) has a 1.5 point lead over the field in Under-17 Girls. Anish Giri deservedly conquers 85th Tata Steel Chess Masters 2023

Anish Giri has finally won the ever alluring Tata Steel Masters. What an amazing way he has won the 85th Tata Steel Chess Masters 2023. Firstly, it is a jubilee edition, secondly he defeated both World no.1 and 2, a week apart. Finally, he remained undefeated and played fighting chess throughout the event. There was never a doubt whether Giri can win a super tournament. He was very close to winning the 83rd edition, but he didn't, due to tie-breaks which makes him absolutely dislike the Playoffs after such a grueling 13-round event. The question was always about when. That has been answered on 29th January 2023. This might just be Giri's year as he cemented his legacy by winning the strongest 'Wimbledon of Chess' as his first proper super tournament victory.

Kumar Gaurav dominates 1st Mungeli Trophy Rating Open 2023

Second seeded Kumar Gaurav scored a staggering 9.5/10 to win 1st Mungeli Trophy Rating Open 2023. He finished a whopping 1.5 points ahead of the field. Despite drawing his third round game, he won the next seven games to become a clear champion. Kamad Mishra made sole 8/9 to finish second. Five players scored 7.5/9. Out of them, Mobin Farooque was adjudged third according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹150000. Tata Steel 2023 R12: Praggnanandhaa makes an epic draw against Carlsen

Praggnanandhaa quite possibly made one of the best saves of his career against Magnus Carlsen. The teenager drew with the world no.1 for the first time in a Classical game in their second ever Classical encounter at the penultimate round of 85th Tata Steel Chess Masters 2023. He deservedly received the compliment of "...he defends very well". No matter how the tournament ends for Pragg, he has certainly shown that he hang with the very best in the world. Abdusattorov drew with So. He is in a very good position to win the tournament. If he draws and Giri wins the final round, we might see a Playoff. Gukesh drew with Aronian in a well contested battle. IM Ameya Audi scored a sensational 9/9 to win Late Venkatesh and Sumathi Shanbag Memorial 2nd Rapid Rating Open 2023. He finished a full point ahead of the competition. Lad Mandar Pradip and IM Nitish Belurkar scored 8/9 each. They were placed second and third respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹100000. The top three prizes were ₹25000, ₹15000 and ₹10000 along with a trophy each. The winner also received a rolling trophy. Tata Steel 2023 R11: Calm before storm

Six out of seven games ended in draws in the eleventh round of 85th Tata Steel Chess Masters 2023. The only decisive game was won by Parham Maghsoodloo against R Praggnanandhaa. The teenager made a questionable choice of offering his knight for exchange after spending the majority of the opening maneuvering it on the board. This was his second consecutive loss and he will face Magnus Carlsen in the penultimate round. The Norwegian would certainly try to win his last two games and hope things work out in his favor for a Playoff and possibly win the event too. Round 12 starts today at 6:30 p.m. IST. Aishwin Daniel wins Khelo Chess India Late R Satyamurthy Memorial Rapid Open 2023

Aishwin Daniel won the first Khelo Chess India Rapid Open 2023. The tournament was organized in Bhopal with the aim of taking chess to every household in the central India. Aishwin scored 6/7, remained undefeated, edged past three more players to become the champion. It was held in memory of Late R Satyamurthy, the first National chess player of Madhya Pradesh. Vedant Bhardwaj, Ravi Pallsule and Rajeev Singh Parihar also scored 6/7. They were placed second to fourth respectively according to tie-breaks. One of the latest IMs of India, Shantanu Bhambure scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win 1st GCH Sharad Pawar Rapid Rating Open 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the field. Four players scored 8/9. Aakash Sharadchandra Dalvi and Shailesh Baria were placed second and third according to tie-breaks. Aakash also remained undefeated. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹200000. The top three prizes were ₹25000, ₹20000 and ₹15000 along with a trophy each. A total of 412 players including 5 IMs and a WIM took part from various part of the country. MPL 11th National Schools Chess Championships 2023 - A Curtain Raiser

Why Tamil Nadu is the numero-uno in the Indian chess scene? One of the main reasons is its organizing strength and ability to conduct big level tournaments. Regular, frequent and systematic tournaments have helped to generate the players, quality as well as quantity wise. Academic institutions play a vital role in promoting chess by helping players as well as providing venue with excellent infrastructure and facilities. Adhiyaman College Engineering, Hosur and Dr. Mahalingam College of Engineering, Pollachi have come forward to hold the National Schools Chess Championships and the National Team Chess Championships within a gap of ten days.
