S Rohith Krishna clinches 19th Malakoff Open 2023

IM S Rohith Krishna scored 7.5/9 to win 19th Malakoff Open 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the field. Despite losing his second round game against FM Samuel Malka (FRA), Rohith bounced back strong and scored 6.5/7 in the next seven games to win the tournament. His sole draw of the event was against the eventual second runner-up, GM Momchil Nikolov (BUL). Six players scored 7/9. GM Radoslav Dimitrov (BUL) and Momchil were placed second and third according to tie-breaks. GM Koustav Chatterjee, Sanket Chakravarty and FM Sourath Biswas are three other Indians to finish among top ten. They scored 7/9, 7/9 and 6.5/9 to secure fourth, sixth and eight place respectively.

Sanskar Gaigore wins All India Below 1600 Rating Tournament 2023

12-year-old Sanskar Gaigore scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win All India Below 1600 Rating Tournament 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the field. Six players scored 7.5/9. Out of them Mradul Yadav and Nilay Kulkarni secured second and third place respectively according to tie-breaks. Sanskar drew with Mradul in the penultimate round and beat Nilay in the previous. The entire podium finishers are from Nagpur. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹400000. The top three prizes were ₹50000, ₹35000 and ₹21000 along with a trophy each respectively. Superbet Classic 2023 R8: Duda beats Firouzja, helps Caruana regain sole lead

Jan-Krzysztof Duda has achieved a lot of things. One thing he hadn't done yet was to beat Alireza Firouzja in a Classical rated game. That changed yesterday. The current world no.2 suffered his second loss of the event when he once again went wrong in the endgame. Time and again, the area which has proved to be Firouzja's recurring weakness in any format of the game is endgame. Once he improves that area, he can be the next World Cup winner as that is a little over two months away. This draw helped Fabiano Caruana emerge as the sole leader once again. Utkal Ranjan Sahoo wins 1st KT Global Rating Open 2023

Utkal Ranjan Sahoo, Nilsu Pattnayak, Alekhya Mukhopadhyay and Arpan Das scored 7.5/9 each. The top seed of the event, Utkal won 1st KT Global School Rating Open 2023 due to better tie-breaks. The remaining three were placed second to fourth respectively. Utkal drew against the eventual runner-up Nilsu in the penultimate round. Both of them remained undefeated. The tournament was organized in memory of Arati Bijoy Mohanty. The total prize fund was ₹500000. The top three prizes were ₹50000, ₹30000 and ₹20000 along with a trophy each respectively. Leon Luke Mendonca clinches Baku Open 2023 with a 2732 performance

GM Leon Luke Mendonca scored an emphatic victory over GM-elect IM Prraneeth Vuppala in the final round of Baku Open 2023. He finished with the same score 7/9 as GM Aleksandar Indjic (SRB) and GM Vladislav Kovalev. Leon won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Indjic and Kovalev were placed second and third. GM Sethuraman S P scored an unbeaten 6.5/9 to finish fourth. IM Prraneeth Vuppala and GM Aditya Mittal secured sixth and seventh place scoring 6/7 each. India's latest IM Divya Deshmukh secured third place in the Women's category scoring 5/9. This is Leon's third rating open triumph in less than 2.5 months and five podium finishes in his last six strong open events. His performance this year is the definition of impressive. For the first time in Superbet Chess Classic 2023, all five games ended in draws. However, there were plenty of exciting games. Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and Richard Rapport had n intriguing queen and minor piece endgame. Both sides were unable to push hard as that could have turned fatal. Wesley So had an opportunity to beat the new world champion Ding Liren. He could have sacrificed an exchange to gain the upper hand, before he exchanged his queen for rook and two bishops. IM Dhulipalla Bala Chandra Prasad scored an unbeaten 4/5 to win SonFlow Cup - Kolding City Championship 2023. Bala Chandra's biggest win of the event was against the reigning Danish champion and the eventual runner-up, GM Boris Chatalbashev. He scored 3.5/5. IM Filip Boe Olsen (DEN) edged past GM Vladimir Hamitevici (MDA) to finish third. In Master 2 group, IM Sidhant Mohapatra scored an unbeaten 3.5/5 to finish second. FM Daniel Kopylov (GER) won the section scoring 4/5. The top three prizes in Master 1 were 5000 + trophy, 2000 and 1000 Danish Kroner each. The top seed of the tournament, Kishan Kumar scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win Chess for Everyone Rating Open 2023 in Sagar, Madhya Pradesh. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. Four players - Kamad Mishra, Sandeep K Gupta, Shubham Pareta and Muralilal Kori scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed second to fourth respectively according to tie-breaks. Kishan faced all of them in the last four rounds. He defeated sandeep and Shubham, drew against Kamad and Murailal. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹50000. The top three prizes were ₹11000, ₹8000 and ₹6000 along with a trophy each respectively. IM Prraneeth Vuppala bounced back with a victory over the top seed GM Hans Niemann in the penultimate round of Baku Open 2023. Niemann's attack on the kingside did not work out the way he wanted. Prraneeth seized his opportunity and scored a victory to move 6/8. GM Leon Luke Mendonca drew against GM Nijat Abasov. Leon is also at 6/8. Both Prraneeth and Leon will face each other in the final round. They are trailing the leader, GM Mahammad Muradli by a half point 6.5/8. WGM Divya Deshmukh lost to IM Aditya S Samant. Superbet Classic 2023 R5: Firouzja beats Ding Liren, now World no.2 again

World no.4 Alireza Firouzja became the first person to beat Ding Liren after he became the 17th world champion. This win also returned Firouzja to the World no.2 position in the live ratings. The Chinese made a tiny inaccuracy in the queen vs rook and bishop with few pawns endgame. Firouzja seized his opportunity and won it comfortably. He is now at shared second place with Wesley So and Richard Rapport at 3/5 each, a half point behind the tournament leader, Fabiano Caruana 3.5/5. The former World Blitz champion, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave scored his first win of the event against Ian Nepomniachtchi. MVL and Anish Giri are now at 50% score. Today is a rest day. IM Prraneeth Vuppala lost against GM Tornike Sanikidze (GEO) in the seventh round of Baku Open 2023. Prraneeth had a better position at one point. A few inaccurate decisions eventually cost him the game. GM Leon Luke Mendonca made a quick 12-move draw against GM Rauf Mamedov (AZE). Thus, Tornike is now the sole leader 6/7, followed by Leon and GM Mahammad Muradli (AZE) at 5.5/7 each. IM Aditya S Samant was a few moves from winning the game against GM Hans Niemann (USA). However, he missed his opportunity and the American escaped with a draw. In a battle of Asian Continental medalists, WGM Divya Deshmukh made a great save from a lost position against GM Harsha Bharathakoti. Peter Svidler wins 28th Tepe Sigeman & Co 2023, Gukesh shares second place

Boris Gelfand scored the sole victory in the final round of 28th TePe Sigeman & Co Chess Tournament 2023. The win did not come easy. The legend started with three losses and then made three draws. The multi-stage endgame seemed to be heading towards a draw. His opponent, world's youngest GM Abhimanyu Mishra was unbeaten at 4/6. A draw would have allowed the boy to play tie-breaks against Peter Svidler. However, he crumbled in the final moments and Gelfand won. It means Peter Svidler won the tournament in his first appearance at this event. In the final round, he drew against D Gukesh who is now at the top of the FIDE Circuit leaderboard having 43.12 points. Gukesh shared second place with Nils Grandelius and Abhimanyu scoring 4/7 each. A two-day chess pilgrimage to Chennai

As soon as the World Championship Match ended on the 30th of April 2023, IM Sagar Shah decided to visit the Chess capital of India - the city of Chennai. In the plan was to interview the five-time World Champion and the legendary Vishy Anand on the Ding vs Nepo World Championship Match. But apart from this nothing really was planned. However, things unfolded beautifully as Sagar met IM Saravanan, GM Vishnu Prasanna, WIM Raghavi, GM Shyam Sundar, IM Ilamparthi, IM Jubin Jimmy and GM Pranav V. Sagar describes these two days as a chess pilgrimage.
