European Club Cup 2023 R5: Offerspill Sjakklubb and Superchess set up a massive clash

Magnus Carlsen scored a crushing victory against Vincent Keymer in the fifth round of 38th European Chess Club Cup 2023 Open. Although, the world no.1 missed an opportunity to trap the teenager's queen, nevertheless his win earned his team Offerspill Sjakklubb two points over the defending champion, Novy Bor. Raunak Sadhwani and Pranav Venkatesh drew against Nils Grandelius and Thai Dai Van Nguyen respectively. Vishy Anand made his third consecutive draw. This time against Haik Martirosyan. Anand's team Superchess managed to beat Asnieres - Le Grand Echiquier. Offerspill Sjakklubb and Superchess will inevitably clash in the penultimate sixth round. Pranav makes a great escape against Thai Dai Van

GM Nihal Sarin was held to a draw by GM Peter Michalik. Nihal's team Tajfun SK Ljubljana won against SK Javes Modra 1.5-4.5. GM Aditya Mittal of Gambit Asseco-SEE drew against Montenegro no.1 GM Denis Kadric. Aditya's team lost to Elektroprivreda by a minimum margin 3.5-2.5. In the Women's event, SP Gaz Ukraine defeated the sole leader Tajfun SK Ljubljana 1-3 to gain sole lead 9/10.

Vishy Anand (2754) drew his third consecutive game of the event. This time against the Armenia no.1, Haik Martirosyan (2696). Vladimir Fedoseev (2691) scored the key victory for Superchess against Sergei Movsesian of Asnieres - Le Grand Echiquier.

Every day round starts at 3 p.m. local time, 6:30 p.m. IST from 1st to 7th October 2023. The final round on 7th October starts 2 p.m. local time, 5:30 p.m. IST. The seven-round Swiss system tournament has a time control of 90 minutes for 40 moves plus 30 minutes for the rest of the game with an increment of 30 seconds per move, starting from move one. The tournament will be taking place at Grand Blue FAFA Conference Hall in Durrës, Albania.
