Magnus moves closer to his third GRENKE Classic title, Rapport reduces the gap

Magnus Carlsen (NOR) scored 1.5/2 on the fourth day of GRENKE Chess Classic 2024 to maintain his sole lead. First he defeated Daniel Fridman (GER) in Round 7. Then he drew against the reigning world champion, Ding Liren (CHN) in the eighth round. Richard Rapport (ROU) won both of his games to make a strong comeback after losing two in-a-row. The world no.1, Magnus is still at the top 5.5/8, closely followed by Rapport at 5/8. Magnus will face Vincent Keymer (GER) and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (FRA) in the last two rounds. FIDE Candidates 2024: All set for the chess tournament of the year in Toronto

The FIDE Candidates and Women's Candidates 2024 is set to take place in Toronto, Canada from 3rd to 22nd April 2024. This will be a historic event as for the first time both Open and Women's Candidates will take place simultaneously at the same time and place. Five Indians - three in Open and two in Women, the highest ever participation by Indians at this event, is another record that will be broken. The Opening Ceremony will take place on Wednesday 3rd April, while the first round starts on Thursday 4th April 2024 at 2:30 p.m. local time, Friday 5th April 12 a.m. IST. GRENKE Open R1-3: 12-year-old Henry Edward Tudor survives 136 moves against top seed Arjun Erigaisi

50 players have made a perfect start at GRENKE Chess Open A 2024. Only two Indians - IM Divya Deshmukh and IM Manish Anto Cristiano F have started their event with a hat-trick of wins. The top seed, GM Arjun Erigaisi was held to a draw by promising Romanian talent - 12-year-old FM Henry Edward Tudor. The game reached at a queen vs rook and knight endgame after 34 moves. The boy defended for 102 moves and built a fortress to claim an important half point against the world no.14. 935 players are taking part in Open A (>1950), 1174 in Open B (<2000) and 793 in Open C (1400-1640), making this the biggest open chess tournament. Prraneeth Vuppala triumphs at Fagernes Slow Blitz 2024

GM Prraneeth Vuppala scored an unbeaten 6/7 to win Fagernes Slow Blitz 2024 Group A (>1800). He finished a half point ahead of the rest. FM Gunnar Lund (NOR) and IM Aksel Bu Kvaløy (NOR) scored 5.5/7 each. They secured second and third place respectively. 13-year-old Oda Skramstad (NOR) scored 6/7 to win Group B (<1800). Despite starting with a loss, she won her next six games in-a-row to finish clear first. FI Sushrutha Reddy, Kazim Yilmaz (NOR) and Amund Pihl Strand (NOR) scored 5/6 each. They secured second to fourth place respectively. GRENKE Classic R5-6: Magnus wins two in-a-row, storms into sole lead

Magnus Carlsen (NOR) won both games on the third day of GRENKE Chess Classic 2024. He is now the new sole leader 4/6. In the fifth round, he defeated Vincent Keymer. The Germany no.1 made a tactical error in the endgame against the world no.1. In Round 6, Magnus avenged his opening round loss against Richard Rapport (ROU). The Artist did not defend his position correctly against the onslaught on his king by the Norwegian. He exchanged his queen for Magnus' two rooks and arrived at a lost endgame. Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (FRA) won an interesting game against Rapport in Round 5. Today is a rest day. Ashutosh Kumar triumphs at Chess for Everyone Rating Open 2024 in Mizoram

Ashutosh Kumar scored 8/9 to win 44th Robula Chess Trophy, Chess for Everyone Rating Open 2024 in Aizawl, Mizoram. Ashutosh won the tournament with a round to spare as he score eight straight wins. His last round loss did not affect his championship chances. Lalbiak Mawia, H Lalrinthanga and Saingura Sailo scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed second to fourth according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹95700. The top three prizes were ₹25000, ₹10000 and ₹7000 along with a trophy and certificate each respectively. This is Ashutosh's first rating tournament triumph of the year. His last rating tournament victory was in June 2014, nearly a decade ago. The objective of Chess for Everyone tournaments is to have a low entry barrier of only ₹250, encourage maximum players to take part in rating tournaments and gain rating. Richard Rapport (ROU) increased his sole lead at GRENKE Chess Classic 2024. He drew against Vincent Keymer (GER) in an interesting battle in the third round. Then he defeated Daniel Fridman (GER) in round 4 to stay a full point ahead of the rest 3/4. The world no.1 Magnus Carlsen (NOR) drew against the reigning world champion, Ding Liren (CHN) in a highly anticipated match up. Carlsen missed a win against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (FRA) in the following round. Speaking of misses, Keymer had the biggest miss of the day when he could not manage to beat the world champion despite having a decisive advantage for the better part of the endgame. GM Srinath Narayanan scored 8.5/9 to win ChessBase India Chess Club 2nd Anniversary Tournament 2024. He finished a full point ahead of the competition. Five players - Aakash Sharadchandra Dalvi, IM Vikramaditya Kulkarni, FM Nikhil Dixit, Amardeep Bartakke and IM Vedant Panesar scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed second to sixth according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹200000. The top three prizes were ₹50000, ₹25000 and ₹15000 along with a trophy each. The tournament was organized to celebrate the journey of the chess club. It started on 19th March 2022. Magnus Carlsen (NOR) made a paltry mistake in the first round of GRENKE Chess Classic 2024 against Richard Rapport (ROU). Rapport made a quick 18-move draw aaginst the reigning world champion - Ding Liren (CHN) to gain an early sole lead 1.5/2. Daniel Fridman's (GER) nearly five years long wait got over and he finally played his games in the GRENKE Classic. He drew the first game against compatriot Vincent Keymer (GER). In the second round, Fridman was up against Carlsen for the first time in his career. Fridman certainly put up a good fight against the World no.1. WGM Mary Ann Gomes defeated WIM Mounika Akshaya in the final round of Velammal AICF WGM Round-Robin 2024. Mary Ann had already won the tournament in the previous round. The last round win in an exciting battle was just to reassert her dominance over the competition. She finished a staggering 1.5 points ahead of the field scoring 9/11. WGM Enkhtuul Altan-Ulzii (MGL) and WIM Sarayu Velpula scored 7.5/11 each. They secured second and third place respectively. Sarayu had already earned her final WIM-norm last month. GRENKE Chess Classic is back after nearly five years. The winner of 2019 edition, Magnus Carlsen (NOR) will return to defend his title. He will be joined by the reigning World Champion - Ding Liren (CHN), Germany no.1 and World no.18 Vincent Keymer, World Blitz 2021 champion - Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Romania no.1 and World no.27 - Richard Rapport and GRENKE Chess Open 2019 winner - Daniel Fridman (GER). Fridman's nearly five years wait will be over. Over 2750 players have registered in the Open section. Arjun Erigaisi will be the top seed, followed by European 2023 champion - Alexey Sarana (SRB). Mary Ann clinches Velammal AICF WGM 2024 with a round to spare

WGM Mary Ann Gomes won Velammal AICF WGM Round-Robin 2024 when she drew against WGM Nino Maisuradze (FRA) in Round 10. The remaining four games ending in draws meant no other player has a mathematical chance to catch up with her. Mary had an opportunity to gain material and win against Nino. However, she missed and the game ended in a draw. IM Elena Sedina (ITA) needed to call her opponent WIM Angela Franco Valencia's (COL) bluff when she offered her rook as a sacrifice. Neelash Saha wins Bijnor Open Vol.2 2024

IM Neelash Saha, Vignesh B, GM Laxman R R and Balkishan A scored 7.5/9 each at Bijnor Open UP Booster Series Vol.2 2024. Neelash won the tournament due to better tie-breaks. Vignesh, Laxman and Balkishan were placed second, third and fourth according to tie-breaks. Only Neelash and Laxman remained undefeated among them. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹500000. The top three prizes were ₹100000, ₹75000 and ₹50000 along with a trophy each respectively. The five-day rating tournament was organized by and at Vivek College, Bijnor at Uttar Pradesh from 17th to 21st March 2024.
