Abhimanyu Puranik convincingly clinches 10th Chessable Sunway Sitges Open 2023

GM Abhimanyu Puranik defeated GM Sethuraman S P in the final round to win X Chessable Sunway Sitges Open 2023. The win ensured Abhimanyu finishing a half point ahead of the field which means no Playoffs were necessary for him. The second to eighth position were determined by Playoffs. GM Aravindh Chithambaram scored 8/10 to be placed fourth. Sethuraman and GM Iniyan P scored 7.5/10 to secure sixth and seventh place according to tie-breaks. GM Raja Rithvik R scored 7.5/10 finish tenth. He ensured Indians get five places out of top ten. This tournament triumph and a second place finish at 4th Elllobregat Open 2023, put Abhimanyu among World Top 100. Thus, India currently has the highest number of players among World Top 100 - 11. 11 Indians in World Top 100 - FIDE Rating list January 2024

FIDE publishes its rating list at the beginning of each month. January 2024 FIDE Rating list witnesses the highest number of Indians in the World Top 100. Previously it was ten. The year 2024 starts with as many as eleven Indians in the World Top 100. GM Abhimanyu Puranik is the latest entrant among it, thanks to his spectacular performance at 10th Chessable Sunway Sitges Open 2023. GM S L Narayanan enters World Top 50 for the first time. Currently five Indians are in top 30, eight in top 50 and six Indians are above 2700. Narayanan and Nihal are very close to 2700. Nihal had already crossed 2700 in the live ratings last year. D Gukesh and Koneru Humpy have also earned their spot via FIDE Circuit and Rating spot. Ian Nepomniachtchi, Fabiano Caruana, Nijat Abasov, Hikaru Nakamura and Alireza Firouzja are the remaining participants in the Open event. Tingjie Lei, Kateryna Lagno, Aleksandra Goryachkina, Nurgyul Salimova, Anna Muzychuk and Zhongyi Tan comprise the remaining participants in the Women's event. Rituraj Tamuli triumphs at 1st Meghalaya GM Below 1600 Rating Tournament 2023

Rituraj Tamuli scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win 1st Meghalaya GM Below 1600 Rating Tournament 2023. Rituraj finished a half point ahead of the rest. Prashant Kumar Singh, Vashishtha Ankesh and Bapu Debbarma scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed second, third and fourth respectively according to tie-breaks. Both Rituraj and Prashant remained unbeaten. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹3001000, ₹1001000 in Category B. Winter Solving: Solutions Reveal, Top Solvers, and More...

The two tiers of the ChessBase India Winter Solving Championship concluded on December 11, 2023. The event was a resounding success, receiving over 70 entries from all over the world, not just India, and witnessing participation from diverse backgrounds and age groups. There were titled players and solvers as well as skilled amateurs. And there were students and teenagers as there were adult professionals. The level of competition was outstanding. With much difficulty, we have selected a list of best scorers from the many high-quality answers we received. We have planned a tiebreaker between these contestants next week. In this report, we give you the details of the same and, of course, reveal the solutions to the 12 problems we posed.

Levan Pantsulaia clinches 1st Meghalaya GM Open 2023, Aronyak Ghosh second and Ratnakaran third

GM Levan Pantsulaia (GEO) scored an unbeaten 8.5/10 to win 1st Meghalaya GM Open 2023. Levan finished a half point ahead of the competition. IMs Aronyak Ghosh and Ratnakaran K scored 8/10 each. They were placed second and third respectively according to tie-breaks. Both Levan and Aronyak remained undefeated. They maintained their seeding order in the final standings. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹3001000, ₹2000000 in Category A. The top three prizes were ₹301000 + trophy, ₹201000 and ₹150000 each respectively. Nithin Babu became the sole untitled player to make a top ten finish. He scored an impressive 7.5/10 to finish fourth. IM Soumya Swaminathan is the sole woman among top ten. Magnus Carlsen and Valentina Gunina are World Blitz 2023 champions

Magnus Carlsen drew his final round game against Levon Aronian to become World Blitz 2023 champion. He drew his game after he saw Daniil Dubov splitting the point against Dmitry Andreikin. Dubov was the only person who could have forced Playoffs had he won his game and Carlsen drew. In that case, the world no.1 would have required to beat Aronian to avoid Playoffs. Arjun Erigaisi scored 14/21 to finish sixth, followed by Aravindh Chithambaram 13.5/21 at 14th place. Both delivered outstanding performance especially Aravindh. Valentina Gunina defeated Anna Muzychuk to win World Blitz 2023 Women. Harika Dronavalli scored 11/17 to finish seventh, followed by IM Divya Deshmukh 11/17 at 13th place. World Blitz 2023 Day 1: Carlsen, MVL, Nihal and Arjun in a six-pack lead

Nihal Sarin drew his first-ever rated game against Magnus Carlsen (NOR) in Round 11 of World Blitz 2023. The teenager played really well to share the point with the defending champion. Currently, Vladislav Artemiev, Carlsen, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (FRA), Nihal, Arjun Erigaisi and Alexander Riazantsev are six players at 9/12. They are followed by seven players at 8.5/12 each. Chief Arbiter IA Ivan Syrovy (SVK) decided to award 0 (zero) points to both Daniil Dubov and Ian Nepomniachtchi for their draw against each other. A clock malfunction claim caused the delay the start of round seven for an hour. Magnus Carlsen won his fifth World Rapid and 16th World Championship crown. He remained undefeated. In the press conference he answered to a question that, he did not face strong top players like - Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Fabiano Caruana, Alexander Grischuk, Richard Rapport and others. Vidit Gujrathi scored 9/13 to finish fourth. R Praggnanandhaa and Arjun Erigaisi scored 9/13 and 8.5/13 to secure eighth and 15th places. IM Anastasia Bodnaruk won the Women's event. She defeated Koneru Humpy in the Playoffs to clinch the Gold, Humpy had to settle for second place. FM Sahithi Varshini and WGM Priyanka Nutakki scored an impressive 7.5/11 and 7/11 to be placed 13th and 22nd. HelpChess Foundation: Shreya Hipparagi wins the Tanay Johar Scholarship of Rs. 50,000

Up and coming chess talent Shreya Hipparagi has been selected as the winner of the Tanay Johar Scholarship so she can continue fighting it out over the board. The prospect of her playing chess was at risk due to the financial strain it placed on her parents, since travelling over a hundred kilometres for a tournament created a burden. Tushar Kumar, who has been a chess fanatic for many years, unfortunately lost his brother Tanay to a rare type of cancer. In his memory, to spread positivity and awareness, Tushar instated a Rs. 50,000 scholarship through the HelpChess Foundation. Arjun Erigaisi and Vidit Gujrathi are two Indians in five-way lead with Magnus Carlsen (NOR) after the fifth round of World Rapid 2023. Ivan Cheparinov (BUL) and Yangyi Yu (CHN) are the remaining leaders. Bharath Subramaniyam H had a great day after starting the event with a win over Germany no.1, Vincent Keymer. Sandipan Chanda also made an unbeaten start scoring three wins in-a-row to end the first day on 4/5, same as Bharath. In the Women's section, IM Nurgyul Salimova (BUL) and GM Jiner Zhu (CHN) are the coleaders with a perfect 4/4. They are followed by six players at 3.5/4. GM Vaishali R is the sole Indian among them.
