Mitrabha Guha wins a double at Sydney Open 2025

GM Mitrabha Guha won a double at Sydney Open 2025. This is his third consecutive double triumph in Australia after winning a double in Melbourne and at Canberra in O2C Doeberl Cup within a span of few days. The reigning National Blitz champion scored 7.5/9 in Championships section (>2000) and 11/11 in Blitz to become the champion in Classical and Blitz Rating tournaments respectively. IM Ronald Dableo (PHI) scored sole 7/9 to secure a second place finish. GM Sayantan Das scored 6.5/9 to finish third. The total prize fund in the Championships was AU $8750. The top three prizes were $3000, $2000 and $875 each. WFM Supreetha Potluri scored 7.5/9 to win the Challengers section. Total prize fund in Challengers was AU $4550. The top three prizes were $1000, $750 and $500 each. For Blitz, the total prize fund was AU $1000. The top three prizes were $300, $200 and $100. Sayantan Das third in Championships section

Top seed of the tournament, GM Mitrabha Guha was the sole leader 7/8, heading into the final round in Championships. GM Sayantan Das was the sole player trailing by a half point at 6.5/8. Mitrabha drew with GM Antonio Rogelio Jr. (PHI) to become the champion. IM Ronald Dableo (PHI) defeated Sayantan to secure second place, Sayantan finished third. It goes without saying that Mitrabha had a successful tour in Australia as won six tournaments in total in three different events. The total participation combining four events - Championships (49), Challengers (110), Contenders (51) and Blitz (143) was 353.

GM Ronald Dableo (AUS, 2363) went wrong 38.Kh3?? GM Mitrabha Guha (2505) seized his opportunity 38...Rc2! 39.Qg1 f5 40.Rf1 Ng7 41.h5 Nxh5 42.Rf2 Rc1 43.Qh2 Rh1 and Black won.

GM Mitrabha Guha scored 7.5/9, finished a half point ahead of the field and gained 9.4 Elo rating points

GM Mitrabha Guha defeated CM Ashvin Balavignan (AUS) to become champion in Blitz with a round to spare 10/10. The final round result was immaterial as he had already won the event, still he played for a win and won against FM Tomek Rej (AUS) to become champion with a perfect score 11/11. This performance earned him 18.3 Elo rating points, taking his Blitz rating to a career high of 2587.

Supreetha Potluri clinches the Challengers

WFM Supreetha Potluri and Taifeng Lyu (AUS) were the coleaders 6.5/8, heading into the final round. Supreetha defeated her coleader, Taifeng to become the champion.

It was organized by FA Winston Zhao Chen at Novotel West HQ in Rooty Hill, New South Wales, Australia from 23rd to 27th April 2025. The time control of the event was 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment per move.
