Mitrabha Guha wins a double at Melbourne Open for the second year in-a-row

GM Mitrabha Guha won a double for the second consecutive year at Melbourne International Open 2025. This time he won Rapid and Blitz Rating events, unlike last year when he won the Classical and Blitz events. Mitrabha scored 8/9 and 12.5/13 to become the champion in Rapid and Blitz Rating tournaments respectively. IM Felix Xie (NZL) won the Masters section. He scored an unbeaten 7/9. IM Arghyadip Das, GM Sayantan Das and Mitrabha scored 6.5/9 each. They secured second, third and fourth place respectively. The total prize fund in the Masters was AU $7450. The top three prizes were $2500, $1750 and $1250 each respectively. For Rapid, the total prize fund was AU $1050. The top three prizes were $350, $230 and 150. Blitz prize fund was AU $840. The top three prizes were $300, $200 and $140 each. This was Mitrabha's sixth and seventh overall, fifth and sixth rating tournament triumph of the year.

Classical: Felix first, Arghyadip second and Sayantan third

GM Antonio Rogelio Jr. (PHI) and GM Mitrabha Guha were the coleaders 7/8 going into the final round of Rapid Rating Open. WGM Thi Mai Hung Nguyen (VIE) drew with Antonio and he secured second place. Daniel Zhang (AUS) lost to Mitrabha and the latter became champion.

Rapid Champion - GM Mitrabha Guha 8/9

GM Mitrabha Guha scored an unbeaten 8/9, finished a half point ahead of the rest and gained 2.1 Elo rating points

GM Mitrabha Guha won the Blitz Rating Open with a round to spare 11.5/12, when he defeated Xavier Hong (AUS). Although, any result would have been fine, Mitrabha defeated CM Leo Kalina (AUS) to finish with a whopping 12.5/13 and finished 1.5 points ahead of others. Mitrabha went on to win double at O2C Doeberl Cup 2025 and also at Sydney Open 2025. We will mention them in detail in separate reports.

Runner-up in Masters - IM Arghyadip Das 6.5/9

Second Runner-up - GM Sayantan Das 6.5/9

A total of 28 players including 3 GMs and 2 IMs took part from eight countries all over the world in this six-day nine round Rating tournament in Masters (>2000) category. It was organized by FA Walter Wolffs at Melbourne Chess Club in Melbourne, Victoria in Australia from 7th to 14th April 2025. Rest days were on 9th and 12th April for Rapid and Blitz Rating tournaments. The time control of the event was 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment per move.
